Far away from other places with minimal contact with others. 2. A feeling of loneliness Synonyms: secluded, remote, lonely Knossos was isolated due to their location on an island. polytheistic Definition: (noun) 1.The belief and worship of more than one god/goddess The Ancient Greeks were all polytheistic even though they each had their own patron god or goddess. peninsula Definition: (noun) 1. An area of land surrounded by water on three sides. Synonyms: point, jetty, cape Greece is made up of many peninsulas. isthmus Definition: (noun) 1. A narrow strip of land forming a link between two larger areas of land, surrounded by water Synonyms: strait, nape Corinth had very little land as they were located on a isthmus. colony Definition: (noun) 1. A group of people who leave their native country to form a new land in another place Synonyms: outpost, province, territory Several city-states in Ancient Greece developed colonies to grow more food. tyranny Definition: (noun) 1. A government that is ruled by an unlawful ruler who has all the power. Synonyms: domination, dictatorship Tyranny was often the result of war, when one ruler took over another’s land and rule. agora Definition: (noun) The main marketplace in a city-state, often where community meetings were held. 1. Synonyms: bazaar, plaza, marketplace The citizens in Athens gathered in the agora to debate politics. archy Definition: (noun) 1. A root word of Greek origin that means government Example words: oligarchy, anarchy, monarchy Mono means one, and archy means government, so monarchy means a government with one ruler. polis Definition: (noun) 1. A root word of Greek origin that means city Example words: metropolitan, acropolis, cosmopolis Acro means dead and polis means city, so an acropolis is a city of the dead. Get out your planner!
