Definition: (adjective)
1. Needing no outside help in meeting basic needs.
Synonyms: self-sustaining, self-reliant, self-supporting
š The people of Greece formed small civilizations that were
self-sufficient.
isolated
Definition: (adjective)
1. Far away from other places with minimal contact
with others.
2. A feeling of loneliness
Synonyms: secluded, remote, lonely
Knossos was isolated due to their location on an island.
polytheistic
Definition: (noun)
1.The belief and worship of more than one
god/goddess
The Ancient Greeks were all polytheistic even
though they each had their own patron god
or goddess.
peninsula
Definition: (noun)
1. An area of land surrounded by water on three
sides.

Definition: (noun)
1. A root word of Greek origin that means government
Example words: oligarchy, anarchy, monarchy
š Mono means one, and archy means government, so
monarchy means a government with one ruler.
polis
Definition: (noun)
1. A root word of Greek origin that means city
Example words: metropolitan, acropolis, cosmopolis
š Acro means dead and polis means city, so an acropolis is
a city of the dead.
