1.1 Single – celled organisms have all the characteristics of living things
Vocabulary
Microorganism
Kingdom
Binary Fission
Virus
Living things come in
many shapes and sizes
Living things share
common
characteristics
Living things need
energy, materials and
living space
Viruses are not alive
Very small organisms, some are single celled
Groups of organisms with the same characteristics
Single celled organisms reproduce by dividing one cell into two new cells
Genetic material enclosed in a protein shell, not living
 Can be very small or very large
 Any living thing can be called an organism
 All organisms are made of cells
 Divided into 6 kingdoms:
Archaea, bacteria, protists = microscopic
Plants, animals, fungi = multicellular/larger
 Living things are organized, grow, reproduce and respond to their
environment
 Organization – they have the structure they need to perform functions
to live
 Growth – obtain energy to get larger and build or replace parts
 Reproduction – form other organisms like themselves. Some single
celled organisms reproduce by binary fission.
 Response – react to changes such as light, temperature and touch in
their environment for survival.
 All living things need energy (food) and materials (water and air)
 A place to live and gather what it needs to survive


Genetic material enclosed in a protein shell
Has some characteristics of living things (organized), but not
considered a living thing because it cannot grow, reproduce on its own,
or respond
