What are the requirement of Photosynthesis? The essential requirements are a) Carbon dioxide, water light and Chlorophyll see the reaction . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . What are the products? a) Glucose – C6H12O6 b) Oxygen – 6O2 and c) Water - 6H2O To prove that oxygen is evolved during photosynthesis let us conduct an experiment materials required are a) A beaker b) A test tube c) A funnel d) Water e) Hydrilla plant Animate-Story board 1). Take the beaker and fill it with water. (image) 2). Place a hydrilla plant in the wide mouthed funnel and place it in the beaker in an inverted position.(image). 3). Place a test tube over the narrow end of funnel.(image) 4).Keep this entire set up in sun light(image) after some time you will observe gas bubble coming out of the leaves of hydrilla plant. 5). After a number of gas bubbles collect at the end of test tube remove the test tube closing its mouth with the thumb.(image) 6). Light a match stick and bring it close to the mouth of test tube. Remove the thumb. You will observe that the splinter from match stick glows and burns more vigorously. This is an indication that the gas escaping from hydrilla plant leaves is oxygen. (image) show increase in the glow. What is the index for photosynthesis? How can we know that photosynthesis has taken place? Starch is considered as an index for photosynthesis. Glucose is converted into starch in the leaves. Presence of starch is thus an indicator of Photosynthesis. Presence of starch can be tested by dipping a leaf in iodine solution. If the leave turns blue, it indicates the presence of starch and thus proves the occurrence of photosynthesis. Animate story board 1. Take a green leaf 2. Dip it in a beaker of iodine solution (blue in colour) 3. Take out the leaf. 4. The leaf will be shown as blue in colour (image) In the next episode we shall examine the factors related to photosynthesis.
