Right in the heart of one of the most beautiful and visited cities in the world, the Erotic
Museum of Barcelona (MEB) is, since its opening in 1997, one of the most emblematic
spots of the count city.
The sexy world of the Hindu Kama Sutra, erotic art banned in Japan, the origins of
Spanish pornographic cinema, the history of erotic art through the eyes of the great
masters of painting and the most astonishing sexual records… An exciting travel to
the world of eroticism, and its representation in art through the more than 800 pieces
making up the collection.
The Erotic Museum of Barcelona wants to share the rich culture of eroticism which
forms a part of human history. With the desire to transfer this knowledge through
entertainment and leisure it is the most Exciting Museum in Barcelona.
The MEB waits for the visitor with open doors every day of the year in an exceptional
location, La Rambla, the most popular and historic street in the town and just in front
of the most popular market, La Boqueria.

ANCIENT CIVILISATIONS: Pieces of rock art from the Upper Paleolithic and Ancient
Egypt, Roman oil lamps with erotic reliefs and reproductions of some of the frescoes
found in the streets and houses of Pompeii. The city in which people experimented
love, passion and eroticism with no taboos. The museum also has a collection of
illustrations from the artist Antoni Miró reproducing pornographic scenes found on
ceramic pieces from Ancient Greece.
JAPAN: Shunga engravings with sexual scenes including the most varied actors from
the Japanese society (Eighteenth century – Nineteenth century). Great collection of the
known Netsuke, pieces carved in bone reproducing sexual positions.
CHINA: Ancient Chinese porcelain belonging to the Qing Dynasty (1664 – 1911).
INDIA: Sculptures and carvings in wood and stone from the eighteenth century
representing Kama Sutra positions, the Kama Sutra being the ancient Hindu text on
sexual behaviour. Great collection of illustrations, of the Ananga Ranga, Hindu
handbook on the arts of love, erogenous zones, the art of the preliminaries, 64
different positions to make love...
IMPERIAL RUSSIA: The legends of Rasputin (1869 – 1916) and Catherine the Great
(1729-1796). Erotic figures in porcelain (from 1802).
THAILAND: Collection of phalli. Popular craftsmanship (1970-2005).
AFRICA: Carvings, engravings and masks from tribes in Nigeria, Congo and Cameroon
(from the seventeenth century).
PRE-COLUMBIAN CERAMICS: Popular craftsmanship with erotic images and
representations (sixteenth century).
EROTICISM IN EUROPE ON THE NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH CENTURIES: Itinerary
through the history of the European erotic illustration from the nineteenth to the
twentieth centuries.
-Engravings of Franz von Bayros (nineteenth century).
-French erotic vintage postcards (1870 – 1930) and photographs of the spanking
gender (nineteenth century).
-Series of erotic images from1900 to the end of World War I.
-Erotic watercolours. Peter Fendi (1796 – 1842).
EROTIC SPANISH CINEMA: The beginnings of the pornographic Spanish cinema are:
“El Confesor” (The Confessor), “El Ministro” (The Minister) and “El Consultorio de
Señoras” (The Ladies’ Medical Centre), three short films commissioned by King Alfonso
XIII Borbón (1886 – 1931), grandfather of the current King Juan Carlos I, shot in
Barcelona’s Chinatown on the 1920s. These short films are the only ones of these
characteristics which are kept in good conditions, as most of them were destroyed by
Franco’s regime.
PIN UP CULTURE: History of the PIN UP culture (end of the nineteenth century –
beginning of the twentieth century) and collection of the first erotic magazines
forbidden in Europe. Original calendar with one of the images that immortalised
Marilyn Monroe in the first number of the Playboy magazine in the year 1953 (“Golden
Dreams”, Tom Kelly).
RED ROOM: Itinerary through the history of Fetishism and Sadomasochism. Erotic
photographs of Gary & Pierre Silva and Joe Hamar. In permanent exhibition, “The
pleasure chair” (Yves Fedou, 1998).
EROTICISM AND GREAT MASTERS OF PAINTING: In this Secret Room we see part of
the history of erotic art with some of the great masters of painting, through
reproductions of their work, on a passionate voyage from the XV Century to the XX
Century. Rubens, Velazquez, Courbet, Klimt…
SEXUAL RECORDS IN THE WORLD: The most amazing sexual and erotic records in
history.
CONTEMPORARY ART: Works of contemporary authors such as Bill Murphy, Richard
Fand or David Fernández.
