SITUATED IN THE HEART OF THE NORTH ISLAND, MANGAKINO IS CENTRAL ENOUGH TO BE
EASILY ACCESSIBLE BUT FAR ENOUGH OFF THE BEATEN TRACK TO BE A RELAXED HAVEN FOR
BOTH LOCALS AND VISITORS.
CRUISING ON LAKE MARAETAI
Sit back, relax and enjoy a 2 hour cruise on board the historic
paddleboat Otunui, as it cruises past wetlands and interesting
landscape features along Lake Maraetai to the Whakamaru Dam
or up the Mangakino Stream. Full commentary is offered, with a
licensed bar on board, and a ramp for disabled access.
FISHING
Lake Maraetai, its neighbouring hydro-lakes and the countless
trout streams and rivers are very popular with boaties and
fishing enthusiasts. The local brown and rainbow trout rarely see
an angler so they’ll probably wave at you! Trout Fishing trips on
the Otunui Paddleboat are also popular.

HIKING
Pureora Forest Park’s 78,000 hectares hides numerous
impressive bush walks beneath towering totara, rimu and matai.
Amid the native bush is the spot marking the centre of the North
Island. Visit New Zealand’s oldest Totara tree “Pouakani” and
discover the various mountain bike tracks in the forest park.
Guided forest tours are available and are an entertaining and
informative blend of ecology and Maori culture.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
The mountain bike tracks on the Waikato River Trails and in
Pureora Forest offer great rides no matter what your skill level.
BIRD WATCHING
The Pureora Forest is one of New Zealand’s finest podocarp
rainforests. Climbing the Forest Tower takes you up into the
forest canopy which will get you even closer to the bird life –
including the exotic Kokako (blue wattle crow) and the shy Kaka
(bush parrot).
MANGAKINO MUST DO’S
Fresh air, water, wilderness and a small, heartland community
create a simple, uncomplicated holiday environment – the kind
we used to relish as children.
The peaceful lakeside village borders the western shores of
Lake Maraetai and is surrounded by forest and rolling farmland.
It’s perfect for anyone seeking tranquility and also for those who
enjoy outdoor adventure. It’s the ideal base for hiking, mountain
biking and water sports or for exploring surrounding areas Taupo, Rotorua and Waitomo are all less than an hour away.
WAIKATO RIVER TRAILS
Walkers and mountain bikers can explore a series of free
riverside trails. The winding tracks encompass the magic and
beauty of native bush, exotic forest, historic landmarks, rock
formations, farms, wetlands, extensive lake and river views, and
a 70m suspension bridge across the Mangakino Stream. The
boardwalk sections of the Trails are disable access friendly.
WATER SPORTS
Mangakino has six fresh water lakes in close proximity, making it
a great base for wakeboarding, waterskiing and powerboating.
Lake Maraetai is used annually for the Powerboat Championships
and has also hosted the National Wake Skate and North Island
Wakeboarding Championships. MIA runs a wakeboarding
school (see listing later in brochure). Lake Whakamaru is home
to the Water Ski Club which provides a lakefront clubrooms and
water ski access.
GOLF
Mangakino Golf Club’s ten-hole course sits alongside attractive
Lake Maraetai. It’s an easy walking course with lake and forest
views. The lake even forms part of a natural water hazard. New
members and green fee players are always welcome.
FOOD TO GO
Snacks, all day breakfasts, takeaways and coffee are available
from around the area, both at the lake front and in the village
shopping area.
GETTING TO MANGAKINO
From Taupo 45mins: heading north on SH1, turn left onto
Poihipi Road, follow the road to the end and turn right onto
SH32. At the end of the road turn left to Mangakino or right to
Whakamaru.
From Turangi 1hr 15mins: take the scenic route along SH41 to
Kuratau and right onto the Western Bays Highway, SH32. At the
end of the road turn left to Mangakino or right to Whakamaru.
From Tokoroa 30mins: just south of Tokoroa turn right onto
SH32, over the Whakamaru Dam and follow the signs to
Mangakino.
Go to www.mangakino.net.nz for more information.
KAYAKING & ROWING
The area’s numerous lakes are small, sheltered and perfect
for kayakers and rowers. Paddling across a mirror flat lake
surrounded by forest and farmland refreshes both body and
mind. Kayaks are often available for hire from Mangakino’s
lakefront reserve during summer, or from Adventure Experience,
and tours are also available (see listing later in brochure). Lake
Maraetai is renowned as one of New Zealand’s best lakes for
rowing and has been an international rowing training venue.
