Band Demo
Talk about a symphonic band! On December 11th, the Randolph
High School orchestra
director Mr. Eric
Schaberg visited Ironia
School with his musicians. They came not
only to entertain us,
but to show students
the band instruments.
The band played four
exquisite pieces. It
definitely gave people
(especially me) a great
time. I really appreciated the songs from
“The Nutcracker” that
they perfected. There
were instruments like
violins, violas, clarinets,
saxophones, trumpets,
tubas, percussion,
flutes, bases, trombones, and more!
I play in the band myself! Maybe when you
grow up you could join
the high school band
or orchestra and return to Ironia to play
for the younger students and teachers. So
give it a try!
By Ian P.
New Instruments
Have you ever thought of learning a new instrument? Did you know that we have band (where
you can play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments) and orchestra (where you can play
stringed instruments) programs right in our
school? You can learn how to play instruments
like violin, viola, cello, and bass in orchestra.
When you get to 5th grade band, you can play instruments like clarinet, trumpet, trombone, French
horn, bass clarinet, flutes, baritone, tuba, alto saxophones, and percussion! There are numerous
choices. Here is a bit of information about several
instruments:
A woodwind instrument is an instrument with a
wooden reed.
A brass instrument is one made out of brass which
you can blow into.
A stringed instrument is one with strings.
When you play percussion, you are usually drumming something against something.
Clarinet (woodwind)
Loads of 5th grade students this year play the clarinet. Not only does it sound awesome, it’s enjoyable to play! When you start, it can be a little complex, but you’ll get the hang of it eventually.
Trombone (brass)
You will fall in love with the low brass sound of
the trombone. The slide positions could be a little
complicated at first, but after a while you’ll be
blowing everyone away!
Percussion
You can play xylophones, snare drums, and symbols in percussion. It gives you a head start on
learning all the notes. Holding the stick when you
play the drums and xylophone can be a little hard,
but you can practice anywhere- on a wall, on the
floor, even on your chair! It’s really pleasurable.

New Instruments
Continued from page 4
Trumpet (brass)
The trumpet is a high
sounding brass instrument. It is really fun to
play. The fingering positions may be a little
tricky at first, but soon
you’ll love the way you
sound.
Violin (stringed)
This instrument is the
highest sounding instrument in the orchestra. It’s tricky to
hold and you will make
a lot of squeaks, but
after a few tries it will
be a breeze!
Those are just a few of
the instruments we
have at Ironia Elementary School. All the
other instruments are
remarkable too. Don’t
give up on your instrument if it gets tough. It
gets better! I think you
should try the ideal
music program we
have at school. Learning new instruments
can be a blast!

Typhoon Haiyan
A devastating storm called Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in November 2013. A typhoon is a hurricane formed in the Pacific or Indian Ocean. Typhoon Haiyan had 195 mile
per hour winds. It caused waves that were 20 feet high. Many people were injured. Organizations such as UNICEF, World Vision and Red Cross helped supply them with necessary supplies. Also, many military officers were sent to help them.
Typhoon Haiyan hit the city of Talbacon on Leyte Island the hardest. After it hit the Philippines, it hit Vietnam. Many people were evacuated from their houses. Typhoon Haiyan destroyed roughly 80 percent of the buildings in Talbacon. The storm changed the lives of 9.5
million people there.

Time With Mr. Nittel
This year we have a new addition to our school: a new principal! I had a
wonderful opportunity to interview our new principal Mr. Nittel.
Did you know Mr. Nittel was born in Plainfield, New Jersey? He grew up
with his Mom, Dad, and a cat.
His favorite food is Chinese.
His dream job as a kid was to be a saxophone musician. Mr. Nittel started playing the saxophone in 4th grade.
Mr. Nittel was a band director.
Mr. Nittel loves to be a principal, because he gets to instruct the teachers,
parents, and community workers while educating a new generation.
When I was almost done with the interview, I asked Mr. Nittel, “What do
you like to do outside of school”?
“I like to travel, ski, and spend time with kids,” he said.
The last question I asked Mr. Nittel was, “When did you figure out you
wanted to be a Principal?”
“I was a band director, and I decided that I wanted to learn more about
schools and educating students. So I went back to school for educational
administration and liked it. I feel very lucky to be the principal of the best
elementary school, ” he said.
I had a wonderful time interviewing our awesome principal.

Technology Throughout The Years
Don’t you want to find out what your parents and
grandparents did as a child without iPads and
smartphones? Technology has grown a lot
throughout the years. Think of what people did
back in the 40s and 60s in their free time with little technology. You’re probably wondering now,
too. I’m going to take you step by step through
each era of time to show you everything that
was…or wasn’t!
The 1940’s were a wonderful time. Things were
simpler without technology. Kids enjoyed hiking
and camping. Think of the last time you and your
family went on a nice camping trip together with
no technology. As some people would say, “How
did they survive?” Well, people back then didn’t
even know what a smartphone was; it wasn’t invented yet! Kids also liked playing cards and
dancing (ballroom of course). I think you’ve had
enough of this terrifying time with no technology.
It only gets better from here!
The 60s generation gets better: T.V! It was even
color too! It may have been T.V., but the shows
were nothing like they are today. For adults,
western shows were very popular. As for kids,
they really loved cartoons. For example, the Flintstones and the Jetsons were watched by many.
Baseball was a show the whole family enjoyed.
Well, let’s fast forward 20 years into the 80s!
“Woka Woka Woka.” Pacman has entered the
building! In the 80s, arcade games became extremely popular. Other games included Space Invaders and Mario Brothers. Now we turn to the
greatest invention of all time. Okay, get
ready….the cellphone was invented!!! It may have
been huge and had a big antenna, but it was still a
cellphone! The cellphone was invented by
Martin Cooper. I would be thanking him if I were
you. Without the cellphone, or all of these inventions life would be really weird today.
We’re up to the present day. Technology is very
advanced today. There are iPods and cellphones
not the size of an adults forearm. You should be
very thankful for what you have, because technology today is amazing.

GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is a big concern. Everything can be
affected by it. Plants, animals, and even humans can
get injured. The glaciers were formed a long time
ago. Ever since that time the glaciers have been reflecting the sun’s burning hot rays back into outer
space. Since pollution is causing the Earth’s ozone
layer to become damaged, the sun’s rays come
through more directly, and have a bigger impact on
the glaciers, so they will melt sooner than they
should have. In approximately 50 years, the number
of glaciers will decline heavily. If the pollution continues, the ozone layer could disappear completely, and
all of the sun’s rays will gleam directly at them!
Then the Earth will experience some very intense
heat that could melt the glaciers completely!
The ozone layer is kind of like a shield to the Earth.
It protects the Earth from asteroids and hot heat.
The ozone layer plays a big part in our existence.
Pollution has a big role in global warming. The decreasing of the ozone layer is caused by chlorofluorocarbons. They consist of the elements carbon,
fluorine, and chlorine. When cars drive, they emit
exhaust, called carbon monoxide, which is bad for
the Earth. Once the ozone layer gets a hole in it, the
sun can hit Earth with a more powerful force.
Another concern is fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include
coal, natural gas, and petroleum (gas). There is a limited amount of fossil fuels. It forms over millions of
years. People’s dependence on fossil fuels has been
blamed on global economic problems. Burning fossil
fuels can cause environmental problems, including air
pollution and acid rain. This burning also releases
large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The gases trap heat in the atmosphere;
therefore, they can be contributing to global warming.
Landfills are another problem. They emit gases that
are unpleasant and a hazard to health like methane.
In 2011, the United States produced about 250 million tons of trash and recycled 87 million tons of this
trash. Landfills disintegrated the garbage, but if we
recycle, we could get new material from old items
instead of wasting those old items.
Sometimes items like Styrofoam and packing peanuts take a long time to disintegrate or can never
be disintegrated.
There is a lot more! Here’s a chart to help you.
Glass bottle ---------- 1-2 million years
Styrofoam cup --------- 1+ million years
Plastic bottle -------- 1+ million years
Aluminum can -------- 200-500 years
Leather -------- 40-50
Disposable diaper -------- 500-600 years
Plastic jug -------- 1 million years
The glaciers and the ozone layer help keep the
Earth healthy. If we can stop this global warming
the Earth will live for as long as it can. Though
there are many things that harm the Earth, we can
power through that and make life better!

Interviews with New Students
I interviewed my new
friend Colin Miller. He
lived in Bloomingdale,
Illinois and thinks that
the negative ten degree weather is normal!
Colin went to DJardin
School and misses all
of his old friends, but
thanks to technology
he can FaceTime, iMessage, and e-mail his
friends in Illinois. He says
he misses his old friends
but is happy with his new
friends.
His friends aren’t the only
things keeping him happy.
He can still play the sport
he loves, soccer.

He says Randolph is much
I got to interview a new student named, Gwen Babyak. She is in Mrs. Brodsky’s fourth grade
class. She did not move to Randolph this year. She already lived here. Her old school was St.
Joseph’s in Mendham. Gwen doesn’t have any siblings that go to Ironia, but she has a sister
that goes to Randolph Middle School.
Ironia is different from her old school because Ironia has a playground. Ironia surprised
Gwen because of our playground. Another difference between Ironia and St. Joseph’s is that
Ironia has a ski club. Gwen wants to join ski club. Of course, you know Ironia has lots of
spirit days. At her old school, she had Catholic school week.
Thunder is Ironia’s mascot. Her old mascot was a blue jay. Gwen’s favorite activity that Ironia has is recess. At her old school, they have something called game time. Gwen really
likes Ironia, because there are a lot more people and a lot more space. I hope Gwen enjoys
Ironia for the years to come!

MRS CIRELLA: A GREAT ROLE MODEL
Would you like to
interview a teacher?
Well, for the Ironia
newspaper, I wanted
to interview my
teacher Mrs. Cirella. I
thought it would be
cool to interview a
fifth grade teacher,
because that is the
highest grade in Ironia.
Mrs. Cirella’s name is
Joan Elaine Cirella.
She was born on November 26, 1971 in
Denville, New Jersey.
Mrs. Cirella told me,
“I loved school as a
child because I always
wanted to be a
teacher and I loved
to learn new things.”
Mrs. Cirella’s favorite
subject as a child was
math. She told me, “I
felt it was my best
subject and I loved to
work with numbers.”
Today, math is her
favorite subject to
teach.
Mrs. Cirella wanted
to become a teacher
because of her sixth
grade teacher, Mrs.
Kenney. Also, Mrs.
Cirella mentioned
that she has always
loved to help children.
Mrs. Cirella has
taught for a total of
19 years, all in Randolph. She taught for
16 years in Shongum.
In Shongum, she
taught first, second,
and fourth grades,
and special education.
Mrs. Cirella was a
special education
teacher for one year
at the Randolph High
School. Also, this is
Mrs. Cirella’s second
year as a fifth grade
teacher at Ironia.
What is her favorite
thing about being a
teacher at Ironia?
“The students, because they want to
learn, and they have
fun while doing it,”
she stated. Mrs. Cirella thinks that
teaching the fifth
grade is special. She
said, “You can prepare the fifth graders
for middle school,
and you can see how
far the students have
come since kinder-
garten!”
Mrs. Cirella told me
that she really likes
to work together
with Mrs. O’Rourke.
She explained,” We
share the responsibilities evenly, because
we both have
strengths and weaknesses in certain areas, but the most important part is working together as a
team.”
Mrs. Cirella told me
that being a teacher
helps her be a better
mom, and being a
mom helps her be a
better teacher.
Mrs. Cirella actually
wanted to tell me
some things about
her for all of you to
learn. She has two
children- Savannah
who is five and Anthony who is eight.
She loves the outdoors, especially fishing. One of her
proudest moments
was when she caught
her first salmon (a
type of fish), and she
felt like she had
achieved a lifelong
goal. She enjoys
boating with her
family. Believe it or
not, she has known
Mr. Cervona since
High school!
“Finally, if I was not
a teacher, I would
want to be a police
officer or a detective,” she shared.
Interviewing my
teacher was not only
fun and very interesting, but it also got
me thinking about
what I might like to
be when I grow up.
What do you think
you might like to do?

KINDERGARTEN HELPER
Have you ever wondered what jobs 5th
graders do for our school? Are you interested in finding out? Well, I got together with
Rachel O. whose job is kindergarten helper.
and if Rachel brings a toy to school, her kindergartner will play with it. Her kindergartner likes to jump over cracks in the sidewalks.
Ever since she first heard about it, which
was a couple years ago, Rachel was interested. Her favorite part about the job is her
kindergartner. Rachel says her kindergartener is really cute and she likes to tell her
different things. Sometimes the kindergartener just volunteers to talk, and sometimes
Rachel asks about her school life.
Rachel didn’t know her kindergartener until
this year. Rachel’s brother was on her Kindergartener’s brother’s soccer team. So she
had seen her playing on her iPad, but Rachel never said hi.
At 3:30, Rachel picks up her kindergartener
and takes her to their bus line. When their
bus number is called, she holds her kindergartener's hand and makes sure she gets
on the bus safely.
You need responsibility to be a kindergarten helper. They sometimes need help getting on the bus or going outside to find
their parent. Rachel’s job is not hard
though, and it’s definitely not as complex as
some other jobs. But you still need to
watch the kindergarteners, which is a big
responsibility. Helpers don’t have to sit with
them, but you do have to watch them.
Rachel likes her job because you get to help
people and you get to have a little friend.
The conversations she has with her kindergartner are about what her kindergartner
did that day or who she sat with or what
she did right before Rachel got there. Rachel says her kindergartener is very nice
and fun.
Rachel said she did get close with her kindergartner. She likes to tell Rachel things
and is happy to see her.
Rachel’s kindergartner plays little games,
Rachel feels like a role model because she is
older than her kindergartener. Rachel says
that if she was a kindergartner she would
look up to someone bigger and smarter as
well.
Rachel said that she would recommend this
job. She said she would recommend it to
her younger brother and her friends. She
would recommend it to them because it is
really fun. Rachel says her kindergartner is
always so perky and fun because she really
likes to talk. They ask so many questions
that you can normally answer, and are so
curious!
Rachel will miss her kindergartner when she
leaves for middle school. She will miss the
interaction every day and having someone
as sweet and awesome as her kindergartner
to help.
I hope this article gave you valuable information about one of the jobs you can have
in 5th grade.

TECHNOLOGY USE AT SCHOOL:
A BIG RESPONSIBILITY
Technology use in our district has expanded
over the last few years. We have been very
fortunate to receive iPads, Nooks, and other
electronic devices to help children learn better. Also, technology is a great tool for
teachers to use. We even have a Bring Your
Own Device (BYOD) policy in our school district. Children were given the privilege to
take their own technology to school. With
that privilege, comes responsibility.
The rules for BYOD are a part of the district’s policies. I investigated the tech policies online, and wanted to tell you about a
few I feel are important. While you read
these rules, please think about social media
and how it can affect others. One rule is
that without permission from a teacher,
camera and video use are strictly prohibited
on school grounds. This means you can’t
take pictures or videos, especially of other
people, unless your teacher gives you permission. Taking pictures without permission
would be a very inappropriate action. Another rule is about invading another person’s privacy. That means if a person is under 18 years of age, you have to have permission from their parents to take their picture. You also have to have additional permission to post pictures online. All of these
rules should send you the same message:
you should not use technology without permission or in a way that would embarrass
other people.
Using technology in a way in which it was
not intended to be used at school is a very
immature thing to do. Even though the microphone shrieking and the sticky key
sounds on the computer might sound funny
or cool, it can seriously damage the computer. We should respect all school technology
because it costs a lot of money, and we
should be very thankful that we get all of
this technology.
We should never misuse the Smartboards,
school laptops, or any other electronic device in the school. Technology use at school
is very interactive. Kids love using the computers, and interacting with the Smartboards and iPads. But if we fool around
with this technology and break it, we won’t
get to do all those cool things.
Remember to treat technology at school
like people’s feelings, with care. Also, remember to respect people’s privacy with
technology at school. If you treat these
things the way you are supposed to, more
privileges open may up. Technology is super fun! The more we can use it properly,
the more things we can do with it!

not?
You then go to the zoo manager and ask if there are any tigers at the zoo. The man says there are three and they are missing. He also says you have
to figure out who took them if you want to see them.
You go around and ask the workers if they know where the tigers are. You are trying to find clues. This is what they all said:
Worker 1- At night, I saw a dark shape go into the tiger cage. I went after him, but he closed the gate before I could get in. I went and got the manager. When we came back, we were too late because the stranger had gotten away with the tigers.
Worker 2- I was on break. I didn’t see anything.
Worker 3- I was cleaning the animal cages, but I didn’t get to clean the tiger cage.
Worker 4- I was watching the animals play and I went to fix the lock so no more strangers could get in.

Original Modern Greek Mythology
I have been interested in Greek Mythology ever since my dad gave me a book with many
myths inside. I then found the beauty of the stories, and I decided to take on the challenge
of writing one of my own. Please note that the characters of my story are my own creation, but the setting is in ancient Greece.
Eraphi was the greatest son of Poseidon that ever lived. Wit, his Pegasus, and himself
were the most powerful warriors in all of Greece. They flew through the air and defeated
every monster they came across. During their travels they came across a Cyclops named
Ophobites. Ophobites hit Wit’s wing and he and Eraphi spiraled down out of the sky. Wit
landed on Ophobites and the two fell to the ground. Eraphi in his anger called on the
power of the sea, and a huge geyser blasted out of the ground killing Ophobites and Wit
instantly. A sink-hole opened up in the ground and Ophobites’ body was sucked down in
to Tarturus, but where Wit’s body lay a grand olive tree grew out of the ground. The
blessing of Athena was given because of his valiant attempt in battle.
How did you like my story? I tried to make it like a real Greek myth, with an amazing
story but a lesson to be learned. I think the lesson to be learned in this story is that sacrifice counts for something (in this case one less monster). If you want additional information read a book of myths or the Percy Jackson series.

Ski, Ski, Ski
Have you ever been racing down a snowy slope with two
boards attached to your feet? Skiing is the best. So far
this ski season, I have been to two mountains, and I will
compare them both and explain their differences.
Shawnee Mountain is a good learning mountain. It is located in the Pocono Mountains. They also have great terrain parks. They have a good ski and snowboard school.
Some of my favorite trails are Country Club, Tomahawk,
and Pennsylvania. I suggest that you go to Shawnee
Mountain if you are just beginning to ski.
Camelback Mountain is a good mountain for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. It is also located in the Pocono Mountains. It has a variation of beginner to expert
slopes. They even have a double-black diamond (extreme
expert slope). Some of my favorite trails at Camelback
are Asp, Cleopatra, Nile Mile, and Rocket. If you look
carefully at the trail signs you will notice that they have
an Egyptian theme to their trail names. I would go to
Camelback if you are a beginner skier or an intermediate
skier.
Both of these mountains are fun to go to if you have a
helmet. People can be seriously injured skiing without a
helmet. But if you are safe, you will have a great time!

AninterviewwithMrs.Rubin
Fourth grade classes are doing something different and exci ng during recess this year. Mrs. Rubin is running an
op onal indoor recess. It is open on Monday through Thursday. You can do whatever you like, as long you don’t get
in trouble. I got a chance to sit down with Mrs. Rubin and here are some ques ons I asked her and her answers:
QuesƟon: Do you think other grades should have op onal indoor recess?
Mrs. Rubin: Yes especially grades who are responsible enough, like 3, 4, and 5th.
QuesƟon: At first, did you want the whole grade to do it or just your class?
Mrs. Rubin: I always wanted it to be the whole grade to do it.
QuesƟon: Were you worried that the students were going to be too noisy?
Mrs. Rubin: Yes I was.
QuesƟon: Where were you when you came up with this idea?
Mrs. Rubin: I was driving in the car, on the way home.
QuesƟon: Did you have any second thoughts?
Mrs. Rubin: I did not have any second thoughts.
QuesƟon: How did you come up with this idea?
Mrs. Rubin: I was thinking of how busy students are, and that they may need some time to get
work done. I also realized that some children do not like to go outside and play.
QuesƟon: What do children do at indoor recess?
Mrs. Rubin: Most children color or draw, read, make books or comic books, do homework, or
rainbow loom. Sometimes we do social problem solving games about gossiping (gossiping is
when you talk about someone else) or other social issues.
I wrote this ar cle because of the interest in indoor recess. I personally use it for homework, so that I have more
me to play soccer and other things at home. I have been doing it twice a week, and it is working out great! If you
are a 4th grader (yea!), then I recommend you try it. I want to thank Mrs. Rubin for the interview and for coming up
with the great idea of indoor recess.

Hurricane Sandy 1 Year Later
Hurricane Sandy was a terrible storm. On October 29, 2012 Super Storm
Sandy hit almost half of America. When Sandy hit, 24 states were affected.
Sandy hit with heavy rain and very strong winds. Super Storm Sandy damaged
and destroyed about 360,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey. The floods
went up to about seven or eight feet. In some places, the water went up so
high that some people had to ride on raft boats to get their family to safety.
A year later, many people are still waiting for their homes to be rebuilt. New
Jersey has been waiting the longest for houses and businesses to be rebuilt. At
Union Beach (which is located in New Jersey) more than 85% of the homes
had been flooded. More than 26,000 people in New Jersey still remain unable
to return to their homes.
Ariel Creamer is someone who has helped other people recover from Hurricane Sandy.
Question: What is your full name?
Answer: Ariel Dryna Creamer
Question: How old are you and when is your birthday?
Answer: 15 and January 12, 1999
Question: Where are you from?
Answer: Rockaway, New York
Question: What made you interested in being so involved in Hurricane Sandy?
Answer: I live in Rockaway and I saw that everyone needed help and decided
to do something about it.
Question: Were the houses in your town or near your town damaged or destroyed by the storm?
Answer:Yes my house was badly damaged as well.

Question: What do you want to be when you get older?
Answer: I either want to be a politician or someone that helps other people.
Question: Do you think there are still people that need help?
Answer: Yes there are.
Question: How can others like myself help those that need help?
Answer:You can keep your eyes on the news or see my Facebook page for anything you would like to help at.
Question: How did Hurricane Sandy change your life?
Answer: When I went back to Rockaway, I saw how bad it was and I knew that
nothing would be the same anymore, and I knew that I had to do something
about it for everyone that was hurt in it.
Question: Have you gotten really close with any people you have helped?
Answer:Yes, a family who had a baby, as well as two boys named Charlie and
John.
Question: Do you have any future projects to help those that are still in need?
Answer: Yes, right now I’m working on a Pen-Pal program so kids can write to
other kids in Rockaway so they can understand what happened and they’ll be
motivated to help.
Hurricane Sandy was very dangerous, as you can see. Many people have lost
their homes too. If there is ever a hurricane and you and your family are told to
evacuate do it and go as far away as you can.
