SC Jog-A-Thon
On Saturday, April 14, Santiam Christian

Jog-A-Thon at West Albany High
School. For those of you that have
witnessed a jog-a-thon in the past you know that this
could be the most exciting fundraiser this school year.
The kids will benefit from physically participating in
an event that will raise money for their school and
promote physical fitness; you can see the excitement
and pride on their faces as they run around the track.
We encourage parent participation. Check-in will be
from 9:30-10:00 a.m. Students in grades Pre-8th grade
will have one hour to record as many laps as possible,
the hour will be from 10-11 a.m.
Please visit the Jog-A-Thon form on the website for
more information on participating, getting pledges,
earning prizes, etc.
In the know…
April 30 marks the last day to take advantage of
the reduced re-enrollment fees. After April 30, any
re-enrollment fee not paid in full increases from
$175 to $250 per student. Also after that date the
maximum family cap increases from $500 to $700.
If you have not already re-enrolled your student for
next year, you will want to do so quickly in order
to avoid paying the higher fees. Please be aware
that your student’s space in next year’s class is not
guaranteed until you have paid your re-enrollment
fees in full and have completed the corresponding
paperwork. Forms are available on the website and
in the business office.
Tractor Safety Certification
Another important deadline is May 1. That is the
priority filing date for scholarship and Tuition Work
Aid (TWA) applications. The following is taken from
the school’s website:

complete an application and submit the necessary
supporting documentation to FACTS Grant & Aid
Assessment by May 1, 2012. Applications will be
accepted through August 1, 2012, priority will be
given to applications received by May 1, 2012. (The

Tractor Safety Certification will be offered
June 8-9 at Santiam Christian High School.

of the class. Cost: $50. Please email Mrs. Carson for

If not you, who? If not now, when?
Uganda Team Opportunities
This June, a team of SC high school
students will again be heading to
Uganda. What makes this trip unique is
that this year we will be ministering with former SC teacher,
Kelly Cudney. Kelly now works in Portland with a nonprofit organization called AIDS Orphan Education Trust.
They currently sponsor over 700 orphans in the Jinja area
of Uganda. We are excited for this opportunity to support
Kelly and her organization and look forward to how God
might use us.
We have openings for one chaperone and possibly two
guys. The kids in Uganda love our students and so far our
team consists of 9 girls and 2 boys! We are hoping that
another young man will catch the vision of loving on the
young boys of Uganda and join our team. The dates for the
trip are June 3-21. If you are interested please contact Barb
Hoffman ([email protected]), or call at 541-619-3557.
Parent Book Swap
We will be collecting books until April 13 for
our parent book swap, which will starton
April 16. If you have some favorite books that you
have finished reading, and would like to share
them with other parents, please drop them by the
elementary library during school hours (7:30am3:30pm).

This is a great time to remind people
that “great things happen at Santiam
Christian.” It’s time to take your sign
out of storage, wipe it down, and put it
near the street where people can see it.
If you don’t have a “great things
happen” sign, please come to the
Admissions Office to pick one up
today.
ALL CURRENT and potential Financial Aid
applicants (includes TWA and Scholarship) MUST

IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST TO BE PERFORMED IN APRIL
Santiam Christian High School will perform a classic comedy at Withycombe Hall on OSU campus April 1921. Algernon Moncrieff (Peter Fricke), an English bachelor and the world’s most confirmed ‘’Bunburyist,’’ is
visited by his good friend Jack Worthing (James Webb), who he knows as “Ernest”. Jack has come to town to
propose to Gwendolen Fairfax (Vicky Nelson), the daughter of Lady Bracknell (Rachel Maupin). Algernon tells
Jack that he refuses to give his consent for Jack to marry Gwendolen until Jack explains why the name Cecily
(Abby Woosley) is inscribed in Jack’s cigarette case. Jack eventually admits that Cecily is his ward who lives
in the country, that his real name is Jack, and that he created a younger brother named ‘Ernest’ who he uses
as an excuse to travel to town. Algernon accuses Jack of ‘Bunburying,’ which is the practice of inventing an
imaginary person and using him to gain more freedom. Algernon explains that he has an imaginary invalid
friend called Bunbury.
Gwendolen and Lady Bracknell arrive at Algernon’s home for tea. Jack declares his love for Gwendolen, and
she replies that she loves him too, particularly because he is named Ernest. Jack becomes worried, knowing
that his real name is not Ernest. Lady Bracknell announces that Gwendolen cannot marry Jack until she gives
her approval. After asking a considerable number of questions, Lady Bracknell declines to give her consent.
After hearing of Lady Bracknell’s disapproval, Gwendolen agrees to meet Jack at his country estate. He gives
her the address, which Algernon overhears.
The next day at Jack’s country estate, Cecily, who is Jack’s ward, is studying German and geography under
the instruction of Miss Prism (Whit Anderson). The local Rector, Dr. Chasuble (Ken Anderson), has romantic
inclinations toward Miss Prism. While he is on a walk with her, Algernon, pretending to be Jack’s brother
Ernest, sneaks into the garden to meet Cecily. The two show an immediate interest in one another.
Algernon proposes to Cecily, and she agrees, telling him that she loves him because his name is Ernest.
After Algernon leaves, Gwendolen arrives to see Jack, but meets Cecily instead. Gwendolen is surprised to
hear Cecily claim to be engaged to ‘Ernest.’ Cecily is equally confused when Gwendolen says that she is
engaged to Ernest, and the girls become enraged as they believe that they are engaged to the same man.
The comedy continues as the two men try to create peace between the women, obtain permission from an
irritable old aunt, and discover Jack’s true origin in life.
The role of the butler, Merriman, is played by Wil Sutherland, and the manservant, Lane, is played by Nathan
Maupin. The action takes place in 1895 in London.
The Stage Manager is Sadie Hellesto. Beautiful costumes were arranged by Sara Kubler. This delightful
comedy by Oscar Wilde will be performed at Withycombe Hall at Oregon State University (30th and Campus
Way), April 19-21, at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available in advance at Santiam Christian School Business Office
(541-745-5524), and at the door of the theatre starting at 6:10 PM on performance nights. Be sure to see this
witty, romantic performance. Tickets cost $8 adults, $6 students and senior citizens.
Location Needed for Elementary Garage Sale
We are still looking for a spot to hold our
13th annual elementary library garage
sale for this year. We typically like to run
the sale for 2 to 4 weeks, and businesses
have been very gracious about donating
a space for us. If you have ideas or connections for a
location for us to use, please contact Becky Alexander.
The library is also still accepting clean, sellable items
for the annual garage sale. Smaller items can be
dropped off at the Elementary Library. Furniture
is needed. Contact Becky Alexander alexanderb@
santiam.org to arrange drop off for larger items. The
date will be announced later once a location has been
determined.
