CHARACTER EDUCATION Volume 2, Issue 4 COLLIER DISTRICT SCHOOLS/DECEMBER 2011 “Z.A.P.” Your Students Students need guidance in organizing their lives, which includes completing school work. If they miss one assignment or lesson, they often fail to understand the subsequent lessons. One way to assist your students is to “Z.A.P.” them. Let your students know that “Zeros Aren’t Permitted.” Explain how class assignments and homework benefit the students’ ability to engage with and fully understand the concepts and skills being taught. Then provide appropriate, and sometimes flexible, time frames in which students are to complete the work. Students need to know that zeros will not be tolerated in your classroom, and they must persevere in order to complete all assigned work. Encourage students to complete the tasks they can and be ready to explain why they were unable to complete the others. Utilize Angel as a resource for both students and parents to access when questions about the day’s lesson arise. Providing positive academic experiences like this will help students develop good time management skills and perseverance. WORD SORTS In order for students to truly understand and “own” a word, they must receive explicit vocabulary instruction, which includes multiple exposures to a word in various contexts. One way to achieve this is by providing students with a variety of vocabulary activities that help them acquire words. Word sorts are There are two types of words sorts closed word sorts and open word sorts. In a closed word sort, the teacher provides students with the categories into which the words will fall. In an open sort, the students determine the categories based on their own thinking about the provided words. In either type of sort, the number of categories is limitless as students will determine various relationships and connections amongst the words.
