“Z.A.P.” Your
Students
Students need guidance in organizing
their lives, which includes completing
school work. If they miss one assignment
or lesson, they often fail to understand
the subsequent lessons.
One way to assist your students is to
“Z.A.P.” them. Let your students know
that “Zeros Aren’t Permitted.” Explain
how class assignments and homework
benefit the students’ ability to engage
with and fully understand the concepts
and skills being taught. Then provide
appropriate, and sometimes flexible, time
frames in which students are to complete
the work. Students need to know that
zeros will not be tolerated in your
classroom, and they must persevere in
order to complete all assigned work.
Encourage students to complete the tasks
they can and be ready to explain why
they were unable to complete the others.
Utilize Angel as a resource for both
students and parents to access when
questions about the day’s lesson arise.
Providing positive academic experiences
like this will help students develop good
time management skills and
perseverance.

WORD SORTS
In order for students to truly
understand and “own” a word, they
must receive explicit vocabulary
instruction, which includes multiple
exposures to a word in various
contexts. One way to achieve this is
by providing students with a variety
of vocabulary activities that help
them acquire words. Word sorts are
There are two types of words sorts closed word sorts and open word
sorts. In a closed word sort, the
teacher provides students with the
categories into which the words will
fall. In an open sort, the students
determine the categories based on
their own thinking about the provided
words.
In either type of sort, the number of
categories is limitless as students will
determine various relationships and
connections amongst the words.
