Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce

From the Board Chair
Craig Kautz
Dear Valued Member: Jim Collins, in Good to Great,
wrote that great organizations “simplify a complex
world into a single organizing idea or guiding
principle. This guiding principle makes the complex
simple, helps to focus the attention and energy of
the organization on the essentials, and becomes the
frame of reference for all decisions.”
commitment to collaboration when it embedded in the Chamber Vision
that the membership would “Work together, and with other
entities, to attain the Mission of the Chamber.” As members
of the Chamber, “we” really needs to be we. Our membership, not just
our staff, needs to make things happen. This requires us to move from
the self-centered question of “what can the Chamber do for me” to “what
can I do to help our Chamber to attain our Mission?
In my experience great organizations are not only focused, they
are also collaborative, data-driven, and improvement oriented.
Will we grow in our effectiveness if we stop here? No. We must now
develop measureable goals that we track and use to continuously
improve. As the Chamber Chair, I will be working with the
Board and staff to develop goals the Chamber will pursue.
While I believe our goals will likely include increased
membership, I have a strong feeling that workforce development and
talent retention may also be very high
on our list. While it will be up to the
2017 Board and the Boards that
follow, I hope the goals we develop
will drive our organization beyond a
single year. I hope that because I know holding targets in place longer
than a single year tend to drive real innovation and real change.
As the incoming Chamber Chair, I promise to work with the members
and staff of the Chamber to assure our Chamber remains a great
organization. Given the work of the 2016 Chamber Board,
Chair Andrew Janzen, President Tom
Hastings, and our Chamber Staff,
the Chamber is well on the way to greater
effectiveness this coming year.
“Improving Business,
Improving Life”
Given their recent work, our Chamber now has a single organizing
idea. That idea is to “improve business, improve life.” While this is a
shortened version of the long-held Mission of the Chamber, this simple
slogan is something developed by the Board this year. This focus makes
me proud because it indicates that, as a Chamber, we are willing to work
together for more than business success and economic gain. While both
are incredibly important and remain a primary part of our focus, I am
proud that we seek to make an even greater contribution. We will impact
life. As a member of the Chamber, I hope you too are committed to this
worthy purpose.
While it is natural for a Chamber to be collaborative within, given that
building and maintaining a business network is one of our primary
functions, the 2016 Board and leadership reaffirmed the Chambers
I want to thank Andrew, Tom, the Board (both retiring and new), and
all the members of the Chamber for their efforts this past year. Please
know that I take my role as Chair very seriously and that I am honored
to be only the second school superintendent to hold this position of
responsibility in the last 25 years or so.
Improving business, improving life. Isn’t this something we can get
squarely behind?
Sincerely, Craig Kautz, Incoming Chair

The Ag Committee awarded scholarships to two college students
majoring in an Ag related field. Those students were Brittney Reinsch
from Sutton and Jenna Langer from Superior. Funds were also donated
to the Adams County 4-H camps to help support students in the area
interested in learning more about Ag related fields. The 2016 Ag
Appreciation Barbecue was a huge success and drew over 850 people
to congratulate the Aggie award winner, Dutton—Lainson Company,
and enjoyed great entertainment by Comedian/Ventriloquist, David
Malmberg. The council also promoted and worked at the Adams
County Fair 4-H auction encouraging animal sales to local buyers.
There were 54 new members added during the 2016 year; hosted 27
Business After Hours, 4 Business Before Hours, held 26 Anniversary
Salutes, and performed 33 Ribbon Cuttings. Operation Thank You
resulted in over 650 Chamber members being contacted in two days.
Annual meeting recognized local leaders and volunteers.
CRIME PREVENTION
In coordination with the Hastings Police, ‘National Night Out’ filled
Chautauqua Park to raise awareness against crime in our community
and promote positive realationships. There were 15 non-profit
organizations that were at the event to promote awareness about their
services they provide to the community.
WELLFORCE
Active after Hours was held in June at Downtown Central Park and
drew nearly 100 walkers. Wellness roundtables were held to discuss
strategies in corporate wellness.
GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS
In September, they hosted the Hastings Chamber Legislative meeting.
Several representatives from the State Chamber, Senator Les Seiler
and Steve Halloran were present and discussed key issues for the
2017 legislative session. Other events held were several well-attended
“Coffee with the Senator” with Senator Seiler. The committee also
participated in monthly legislative calls to stay informed on current
issues directly affecting business.
WHOOPERS & HOOPERS
2016 was another successful year for the adult 5-on-5 basketball
tournament with 125 teams participating from across the country.
There were 5 states represented in this year’s tournament. $5,600
was given out in cash prizes to the Elite team winners and Slam
Dunk/3 point contest winners. Skyler Good and Megan Maul were the
winners of the $500 Whoopers and Hoopers college scholarship. This
scholarship is offered to any student who attends one of the schools
that allow us to use their gyms free of charge for the tournament.

out approximately 275 business development/relocation packets and
produced three ACCRA cost of living studies. The Builders Bureau had
over 1200 requests for plans on building projects throughout Nebraska.
CHAMBER PLANNING SESSION
The fall planning session was held at Central Community College. At
this meeting we reviewed the 2016 goals and discussed potential 2017
goals. This year Craig Kautz did a fantastic job in facilitating our planning session. These goals will be discussed and finalized at a future
meetings. For more information please contact the Chamber.
B-I-E PARTNERSHIP
In 2016, the BIE Committee awarded two grants to the following
schools: St. Cecilia High School (Entrepreneurship Project, class

30 businesses showed their support by participating on our Student

RETAIL DEVELOPMENT
2016 was a busy year for the Retail Development Committee. The
committee implemented the Mystery Shopper program, designed to
help businesses improve through anonymous customer feedback. The
survey is posted on our Shop Hastings Facebook page for anyone to fill
out. In July, the committee brought Jon Schallert, an internationallyrecognized business expert, to Hastings. Jon gave Hastings businesses
