This guiding principle makes the complex simple, helps to focus the attention and energy of the organization on the essentials, and becomes the frame of reference for all decisions.” commitment to collaboration when it embedded in the Chamber Vision that the membership would “Work together, and with other entities, to attain the Mission of the Chamber.” As members of the Chamber, “we” really needs to be we. Our membership, not just our staff, needs to make things happen. This requires us to move from the self-centered question of “what can the Chamber do for me” to “what can I do to help our Chamber to attain our Mission? In my experience great organizations are not only focused, they are also collaborative, data-driven, and improvement oriented. Will we grow in our effectiveness if we stop here? No. We must now develop measureable goals that we track and use to continuously improve. As the Chamber Chair, I will be working with the Board and staff to develop goals the Chamber will pursue. While I believe our goals will likely include increased membership, I have a strong feeling that workforce development and talent retention may also be very high on our list. While it will be up to the 2017 Board and the Boards that follow, I hope the goals we develop will drive our organization beyond a single year. I hope that because I know holding targets in place longer than a single year tend to drive real innovation and real change. As the incoming Chamber Chair, I promise to work with the members and staff of the Chamber to assure our Chamber remains a great organization. Given the work of the 2016 Chamber Board, Chair Andrew Janzen, President Tom Hastings, and our Chamber Staff, the Chamber is well on the way to greater effectiveness this coming year. “Improving Business, Improving Life” Given their recent work, our Chamber now has a single organizing idea. That idea is to “improve business, improve life.” While this is a shortened version of the long-held Mission of the Chamber, this simple slogan is something developed by the Board this year. This focus makes me proud because it indicates that, as a Chamber, we are willing to work together for more than business success and economic gain. While both are incredibly important and remain a primary part of our focus, I am proud that we seek to make an even greater contribution. We will impact life. As a member of the Chamber, I hope you too are committed to this worthy purpose. While it is natural for a Chamber to be collaborative within, given that building and maintaining a business network is one of our primary functions, the 2016 Board and leadership reaffirmed the Chambers I want to thank Andrew, Tom, the Board (both retiring and new), and all the members of the Chamber for their efforts this past year. Please know that I take my role as Chair very seriously and that I am honored to be only the second school superintendent to hold this position of responsibility in the last 25 years or so. Improving business, improving life. Isn’t this something we can get squarely behind?
