HY DO GEESE FLY IN WEDGES?
God wonderfully designed them for long migratory flights. He never intended a goose to fly thousands of
miles alone. Neither did He intend for a flock to make
the distance flying in a randomized group. To make the
distance requires a unified, cooperative effort in a specialized, synergistic configuration. Synergy is the interaction or cooperation of two or more agents to produce
a combined effect greater than the sum of their individual efforts.
begin to break formation and fly alone or the flock flies
in a randomized group like a bunch of ravens or black
birds—every bird for itself.
JESUS SAID only when we fly in formation (unity) that
the world will know the Father sent Him. Only when we
take our position behind the leader and follow in harmony with each other will the world believe the Father sent
Jesus.
GOD PLACED the instinct within geese to fly in a
wedge to produce the synergy necessary to travel distances no single goose has the strength to accomplish.
By forming a wedge or “V” the currents generated by
the lifting power of many wings enables the group to fly
twice the distance of any one bird. In fact, the whole
flock increases flight efficiency by 71% compared to a
single goose. The synergy comes from the unity of the
team manifest in the “V”.
A LESSON learned from the flock of geese applies to
Christians working together in ministry. The Creator of
the goose prayed for unity among His disciples to make
the world notice the glory, power, and divine nature of
the Church. Jesus prayed, that all of them may be one,
…so that the world may believe that you have sent me
(Jn 17:21). He went on to pray, …that they may be
brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that
you sent me (John 17:23).
I NOTICED over the years that rather than forming a “V”
of unity and synergy, Christians too often drive wedges
between themselves and form divisions. Individuals
TO BOND AND SUPPORT each other makes true the
spirit of teamwork despite our differences. As we rise to
the challenge, understand the real value of friendship,
and enjoy sharing, we give evidence as brothers and
sisters to the love of Christ.
