SYRUP! Lets’ take oranges as our example; The sugar in one whole orange registers in our brain that we have eaten something, gives us a sense of satiety and fullness, and switches off our appetite. A glass of orange juice on the other hand, although it can contain the sugar from as many as five oranges, is fairly easy to consume but hardly filling at all. (NB: orange juice like all fruit juice, despite the perception of it being healthy to consume actually contains large amounts of sugar – see ‘Charlie’s Honest Orange Juice’ in the table of common drinks as an example). Imagine in contrast, sitting down to eat five large oranges in one go. Most of us would struggle. By not shutting off our appetite control centres, consuming drinks full of hidden sugar allows us to consume way more sugar than we ordinarily otherwise could stomach. And way more than is good for us!
