A Famous Building in HONLEY?

A Famous Building in
HONLEY?
Well Yes!... The Cricket Pavilion
The village of Honley
and the surrounding
communities can be
justly proud of its own
contribution to the great
buildings of Yorkshire Honley Cricket Pavilion!
It is renowned throughout Yorkshire and is also listed in the ‘Rothmans Book of
Village Cricket’ and Jonathan Rice’s ‘The Pavilion book of Pavilions’. The freehold
title to the Cricket Ground was acquired in 1928 and is held in trust forever as a
sporting venue for you, the people of Honley.
The Cricket Club has been on site since 1878 and has enjoyed an illustrious
history both on and off the field. It hosted a Geoff Boycott benefit match in
1969 and in 2005 the First XI won the Huddersfield League Title for the first
time. However they didn’t stop there winning it again in 2006, 2007 and 2008
to create history in becoming the first club ever to win four consecutive
League Titles. They also won the Title in 2010 and 2011 along with the Sykes
Cup in 2005 and 2006 and the much coveted Black Sheep Yorkshire
Champions Trophy in 2008. These on field achievements make Honley CC
one of the most successful Clubs in the League's
history. The Club also boasts a thriving Junior
section where our local youngsters learn their
craft from qualified coaches.
Apart from the Cricket Club, the facilities are used
by Honley Senior Football Club, Honley Junior
Football Club, the two local schools, Holmfirth
Harriers AC and many other organisations and
private individuals.
So we all own a superb building in a lovely ground...
...but - there’s always a “BUT”, isn’t there?
But, the wooden pavilion is very
dilapidated with inadequate
showers, changing and toilet facilities.
Complete refurbishment is long
overdue. The Facilities Development
Group was formed in 2012 to produce a
plan for revitalising the pavilion and
reinstating the changing facilities. This
view is also shared by the local
schools and the Junior Football Club. It was
quickly discovered, however, that to meet the English
Cricket Board and Football Foundation guidelines, the
upstairs changing rooms could not be reinstated, so new
single storey changing rooms are now planned to “sit
alongside” the refurbished pavilion.

So, where are we NOW?
Well, we have the support of Honley Cricket Club, the Honley Senior and Junior
Football Clubs and all other participating parties. We have Planning Permission, we
have selected a contractor ready to start work AND we have a great team of people
who are committed to saving this wonderful building and creating a new revitalised
sporting venue for Honley.
But (that’s the second but!), we need more funding. We have done quite well so far
having secured £85,000 from our own fund raising activities and have obtained a loan
from the English Cricket Board of £50,000. We also have reasonable expectations of
securing grants of £75,000 from Sport England and £50,000 from the Football
Foundation - a grand total of £260,000 towards our total project cost of £285,000.
All of these organisations, however, are (not unreasonably) expecting the people of
Honley and the surrounding communities to make their contribution. This is the FIRST
major fund raising appeal to the village since the Ground was purchased nearly one
hundred years ago.
We are aiming to provide a sporting hub for the
community fit for purpose for the next 100 years.
We NEED help to build a sustainable
community and sporting venue for all!
