FOUR GENERATIONS OF CONCRETE INNOVATIONS
For more than 75
years the Kennedy name has been associated
with innovation and excellence in the world of concrete. From our
modest beginnings during the Great Depression, a family legacy
has been built that
grows stronger with
each passing year. This
year is no different. As
we look back on the
Alfred R., Kennedy, Sr; Lewis M. Kennedy,
Garfield Kennedy and Ernest Kennedy
past, we remember the
contributions made by three successive
generations of industry innovators. Lewis
M Kennedy might never have guessed the
impact his decision to open a concrete block
plant would have on the future of his family.
LM Kennedy Concrete Plant (Philadelphia, PA)
THE INNOVATOR
Having observed the early plastic and rubber molds that were becoming more
common in manufacturing Lewis’ son, Alfred R. Kennedy, Sr., and grandson,
Alfred R."Big Al” Kennedy, Jr., identified a trend in the concrete industry toward a more scientific approach in manufacturing. They began investigating the
use of these new molds. As a result of their investigation, in 1988, they started
manufacturing a line of innovative wetcast products outside of Ashland, PA. By
Alfred R. Kennedy, Sr
(1919-2005)
1990, Kennedy Concrete, Inc. had moved to its current location at 570 Dutchtown
Road, Ashland, PA and began marketing custom and stock precast concrete products.
THE ENGINEER
With an earned degree in Engineering from Drexel, “Big Al” applied his
knowledge of engineering to testing and manufacturing a stronger, more dense,
weather resistant product. Some of today's product line has been independent lab
tested and proven able to sustain between 8,000 to 10,000 psi. By the late 1990s,
the company was growing rapidly, and "Big Al” was quietly engineering another
product that would eventually become our bestseller.
Alfred R. “Big Al” Kennedy, Jr
(1940-)
Then in 1998, tragedy suddenly struck. Our plant in Ashland, PA was destroyed
by a fire that wiped out the company's manufacturing capacity. Some might have
thought this would be the end of Kennedy. But our dealers were already selling, and
contractors were installing so much Kennedy product successfully that they patiently
stood beside while we rebuilt the plant. Upon completion of the new plant "Big" Al introduced that new product under the name Blue Mountain Stone. The Blue Mountain
Stone Line was engineered by "Big" Al not only to look and feel like quarried Pennsylvania Blue Stone, but also to meet the rigid demands of landscape architects. Meeting
rigid demands and providing customers quality concrete products is a Kennedy way of
life. As we look forward to a NEW YEAR, we look forward to bringing you a NEW
GENERATION of CONCRETE INNOVATIONS!

The Blue Mountain Stone Line
Blue Mountain Stone captures the beauty of
Pennsylvania Blue Stone. Its uniform thickness
and standard sizes make it a fantastic substitute
for natural stone and makes laying a random
pattern easy. Its quality is unmatched in the
precast industry. Blue Mountain Stone is a
proven alternative with over 15 years on the
market and a over a million square feet in use.

PLANNING - Make a diagram of the area
to be paved. Layout the dimensions on the
diagram. This will help you determine the
quantity of materials required for your job.
Caution: Measurements listed for a product
are often modular measurements. i.e. an
18” paver can actually measure
anywhere from 17” to 18 1/2”.
Check the actual size of the
pavers you will be using.
LAYOUT - Check area to make
sure there are no underground
pipes or cables that your stakes
or digging might hit. Stake out
your area 4” wider than the
planned area.
Use stakes and
run strings to use as straight
edges to lay your pavers along. Note: Make
sure you allow for water drainage away
from buildings. (a slope of 1 inch in 4 feet
to, but not less than, 1 inch in 10 feet)
EXCAVATE - Keep in mind that a paved
area is no better than the base it is laid on.
Spend the necessary time getting the base
just right. This will make laying the pavers
easier and the area will give you years of
satisfactory service.
The depth and composition of the base will
depend on the use of the paved area. For all
uses, remove all vegetation.
 For pedestrian traffic:
If the ground is solid and has good
drainage, depth required will be:
Paving stone thickness + thin layer of
sand .

For heavier traffic:
Depth will be: Paving stone thickness + 1” of
sand + 2” of stone. Sand & stone are to be
compacted.

Auto traffic:
Depth to be: Paving stone thickness + 1” of
sand + 4” to 6” of stones The sand & stone
must be mechanically compacted.
(Compactors can be rented from a local
tool rental store.)
Note: You can increase the strength of
your job, if you make the sand layer a
damp cement mix (1 part cement to 5
parts sand).
LAYING METHODS - There are
three methods of laying paving stone:

Laying on sand. Spread your layer
of sand, level and compact. Then lay your
pavers on this bed, if you need to level
you can put in extra sand.
Laying on a dry mortar mix. Mix a 1 part
cement to 5 parts sand mix (add no water).
Place a thin layer on your compacted bed.
Rake the thin layer leaving small peaks and
troughs. Place the pavers on this bed and
tamp with a rubber mallet or regular
hammer with a board. (Do not strike too
hard so that you don’t break the paver. If
the paver is not level remove or add
material in the base. The tamping is only
to ensure that the mortar mix touches the
entire base of the paver.)


23
Guidelines for Installation
24
Five spot Mortar Bed - This method
involves putting 5 generous spots of mortar
on the compacted sand bed (One in each
corner and one in the middle). The mortar
is 1 part cement to 5 parts mortar sand and
enough water to make the mix “workable”.
The mortar should spread out with light
tamping on the paver. (See note above.)
pavers with diluted ammonia water or
muriatic acid then rinse with plenty of
water.
Apply your sealer following the instruction
on the label.
(Please observe all safety instructions on the
labels.)
JOINTS: Paving is intended to be butt-jointed;
however, if one desires jointed, it is done once
the paving is set.
In climates that do not have a lot of freeze-thaw
cycles per winter season, a dry mix of 1 part
cement to 3 parts dry sand is used to fill joints.
This mix is placed on the dry pavers and swept
into the joints. All of the mix is removed from
the pavers and the area is very lightly sprinkled
with water.
The best method today is to use polymeric sand.
It is expensive but holds up well to the movement caused by freeze-thaw cycles.
WARNING: This information is provided as a
guide and is not intended to be a thorough,
detailed installation guide. There are books
available at libraries, book stores, building supply stores/yards, and online that have complete
guidelines with all the necessary instructions
and safety information.

5
6
CUTTING: The best advice in this area is to
try to lay out the paved area so that there is no
cutting. If pavers must be cut, the best way is
with a circular saw equipped with a diamond
blade, available at most building supply outlets.
Do not try to cut all the way through the paver.
Score each side of paver (depth depends on
paver thickness, but 1/4” to 1/2” is usually
enough). Place the scored paver over a wooden
block and tap with a hammer.
6
SEALING: It is not necessary to seal your
pavers, but sealing does provide protection.
A sealed paver usually looks better, has a better
chance of weathering freeze-thaw cycles and
holding up from acid rain and carbonization,
and dirt is easier to remove. Some sealers make
the paver more slippery or make it less slippery.
(Finish Perfect Concrete Lawn Ornament Sealer,
which can be used on pavers, is one that we use
because it reduces the slipperiness of the pavers).
Always test your sealer on a small area, so that if
something goes wrong it will not have an effect
the appearance of your pavement. (Some sealers
will change the color of the pavers.) Clean the
Always use common sense around your paving
projects. Use all the necessary safety equipment
to protect yourself and those around you.
Watch children around your work area. Falling
pavers, tools, and even your excavation can
cause injury. After finishing your project, we
want you to look back on it with pride and
satisfaction. Please be careful.
