Signal Words
It’s important that students learn to recognize how signal words and
phrases provide critical cues to solving word problems. Specific
signal words help identify the operation needed to find the solution
and are usually found in the last sentence of a word problem.
Addition Signal Words
How many…?
How many…altogether?
How many…in all?
How many…now?
How much…?
Word Problems with Ten Frames
Word problems are an important part of any math program because
they teach children to relate math to real-life situations. When a
student can visualize a problem, he or she can often reach a solution
more quickly. Using the fun 3-D word problem props and ten frames
included with this set, students bring words problems to life as they
practice addition and math facts (to 18) while mastering the signal
words and phrases in these animal-inspired word problems.
Subtraction Signal Words
How many…are left?
How many…remain?
How many more…?
How many…are still?
How many…did not?

solving
word problems!
How to Use:
Gather word problems, 3-D story props, and ten frames and place on
the table. Then have each student do the following:
1. Choose a word problem.
2. Read the problem. Find the 3-D story props that allow you to
visualize the problem.
3. Create the word problem on a ten frame. (You may need
2 frames for more advanced problems** (cards 35-96).
4. Add or remove props to find the answer.
5. Check your answer by doing the math on a sheet of paper.
6. Remember to label your answer.
7. If the 3-D ten frame answer and the written answer do not match,
check the Answer Sheet for the correct answer.
Label Your Answer
Remind students that the answer to a word problem requires both a
number and a word or symbol (6 frogs, 18 cars, $1.25, 35%).
