What is Alzheimer's Disease?
Dementia­A chronic persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders
Alzheimer's­An irreversible progressive brain disorder characterized by the deterioration of memory, language and eventually physical function
It is a disorder of the brain which primarily afflicts the elderly in which mental deterioration is experienced.

Alzheimer's Disease primarily attacks three areas of the brain.
Identify the areas in the picture.
basal forebrain
basal forebrain: memory and learning
cerebral cortext: conscious thought
and language
hippocampus:
Scientists theorize that the culprits
responsible for the death of the brain cells
resulting from the disease are due to
neurofibillary tangles and plaques.
On the left is a picture of a tangle.
Identify to which area does the tangle correspond to the diagram on the right.
On the left is a healthy brain. On the right shows what has taken place in the advance stages of the disease.
Pull
The cerebral cortex forms plaques and tangles.
The hippocampus shrinks.
