Bruegel the Elder - Medieval Histories

Bruegel the Elder
New sensational drawing of Bruegel on show in Antwerp this summer
This summer the Museum Mayer van den Bergh exhibits its collection of works of Pieter Bruegel the
Elder. In connection with the exhibition a new artwork by the artist has been discovered: A landscape
drawing from the period 1552 -1555. According to the curator of the exhibition, Manfred Sellink, the
image shows a mountain landscape with two figures. The composition and drawing techniques are akin to
other works of the artist. For instance both the form of the birds, which look like small rockets, and the
leaves in the drawing contribute to the attribution. Further studies of the type and quality of the paper
shows that it is of the same Italian origin as the paper, Bruegel used in Italy in 1552 -54. Finally under
ultraviolet light it proved possible to see traces of his signature in the bottom left corner.
Dulle Griet
Whether the drawing has been subjected to a computer analysis, like the one developed by the
Mathematician Dan Rockmore is a yet untold.
The drawing, which is in a private collection, will be on show for only a short period of time at the
exhibition: Pieter Bruegel Unseen! The hidden Antwerp collections. On show will be more than 40 prints
and several paintings, amongst those the famous: Dulle Griet.
