This year Assumption started off with
many new faces
and features including the new
staff, new classes,
and fifteen new
students.
The new staff
includes the P.E.
teacher Mr. Hazeltine and the librarian Mrs. Buckley. Mr. Hazeltine
grew up in Walla Walla and is
a 2008 DeSales graduate.
Before he came to teach Assumption students, he taught
at Badger Mountain Elementary in Richland. He is Catholic
and attends St. Patrick’s
Church. Before Mrs. Buckley
became the Assumption librarian she was a kindergarten
teacher. Not only did she attend the Walla Walla Catholic
Schools, but her children have
too. Mrs. Buckley wanted this
job years ago because she
loves kids and books. She is
Catholic and attends St. Francis Church.
This year there are seven
middle school students trying
out the new art elective taught
by Mrs. Hilbert. Some of the
projects they have done this
year in art class are sketching
in the garden behind the
church and drawing realistic
plants, flowers, and statues.

~Fun at the Fair ~
How many people went to the fair this
year? If you did, chances are you saw your
classmates riding rides, in the food court,
or even in the barns! Many people from
Assumption had animals in the fair this
year. Makenzie Frost, eighth grade, Jessica and Luke Nelson, seventh and fourth
grade, all show goats. Jessica Nelson’s
goat didn’t make weight, but it did well in
showmanship. Luke did well in both showmanship and market and Makenzie got
reserve champion market goat and champion dairy goat. Jenna and Taryn Cox, both
fourth grade, and Hadley Beechinor, fifth
grade, all showed steer. They all did very
well. Sadie Jones, eighth grade, got reserve champion for her rabbits. Lindsey
Maiuri, seventh grade, and Dante Maiuri, sixth grade, both showed pigs. Dante’s pig didn’t make weight, but it did
well in showmanship. Lindsey’s pig did
well in showmanship and market. Lauren Ruthven, eighth grade, Lauryn Riney
and Erich Kregger, both fifth grade, and
Dawson Neely, seventh grade, all
showed sheep. They all did very well.
There was a mini zoo at the fair this
year. It had many exotic animals including a tiger, a baby bobcat, a Patagonian
Cavy, and a porcupine! It was called A
Walk on the Wild Side. Numerous students commented on this new addition.
Once again, the Walla Walla Catholic
Schools
held a booth
at the fair
this year.
Mr. Lesko
said, “The
booth was
very successful this year. We had a lot of help
with work in it. For everyone who
volunteered, it was a good community
building experience, plus it made
some money for the school.” Now it’s
on to a great school year!

~Kindergarten Kicks Off New Year~
This year at Assumption we had fifteen
new eager kindergarteners who were ready
to learn. The kids are already learning
about the importance of Christ and His life.
Daniella says, “I love praying during the
day.”
Another favorite part of the day is when
they get to play with the class pets, two
fish and a guinea pig. “We will be making a
class book on the guinea pig,” says Mrs.
Acock.
Mrs. Acock has not only had to deal with year-olds. She said, “My goal for the
students by the end of the year is to
class pets but fifteen new five to sevenbecome more independent.” She has
been preparing for the school year
about three weeks before it started. “I
tried a different approach by looking
at teaching websites. Pinterest has
also been a big help with great ideas.”
Her hard work paid off because the
kindergartners love her. “Mrs. Acock
is the best,” says the class. The class
has also gotten special visits from
Gabe Scheel. Gabe gets along with
the kids and the kids adore him.
The Kindergarteners are small but
mighty and are ready for a bright new
school year.

~Faith-Filled Priests and Retreats~
This summer
Walla Walla
was fortunate
to receive two
wonderful
priests named
Father Brian
Sattler and
Father David
Gaines.
Father Brian, who celebrated our first
school Mass, was born and raised in Spokane. He was a carpenter before God called
him to be one of his servants. He likes to
build chairs and stairs. He became a priest
because he wanted to serve God’s people.
Father David Gaines lived all over because
he was in an Air Force family. He lived in
Colorado, Japan, and Spokane. He was a
music director at St.
Francis Xavier and Holy
Family Parishes in Spokane and likes to sing
Gregorian chant, an old
style of music by the
Church. Father Gaines
became a priest because he wanted to
serve Jesus, Mary, and
the Church.
With the new school year already one
month old, we have two upcoming retreats
and one retreat that has already happened. The Exaltation of the Cross was the
topic for the sixth grade retreat while the
two upcoming retreats are The Rosary, the
fifth grade retreat, and the Kindergarten
retreat. The Exaltation of the Cross was
on September 12. The Rosary is on Octo-
ber 7. The Kindergarten retreat is November 21.
Mrs. Michels
runs the retreats
because it
strengthens her
faith to see the
kids interact with
each other. She
decides on
which middle
school class planning which retreat by
thinking on how much will they comprehend the topics from the retreat.
With new priest and a new school
year full of retreats, plan on this being a
faith-filled time for Assumption students.

~Victorious Volleyball~
This year’s volleyball team is off to a
great start. With a total of sixteen girls,
they include eighth graders Josie, Emily, Makenzie, Lauren, Sadie, and Aly
and seventh graders Emily, Natalie,
Lesley, Holland, Kenna, Madelyn, Jessica, Kelly, Lauryn, and Lindsey. Guiding
this talented team are coaches Mrs.
Wood and Mrs. Brinson. “We have a
terrific team full of talent. We are looking forward to coaching these middle
School girls for they are full of talent and
enthusiasm. We are looking to a fun successful year,” said both Mrs. Wood and
Mrs. Brinson.
One of the skill challenging games that
the team enjoys playing, is Queens of the
Court. It is a small duel when the girls
compete three on three to see who is the
real Queens of the Court. “I really enjoy
playing this game, because we learn a lot
in playing skills, and it brings out the supportive side of the team. When someone
messes up or is in doubt, our team
cheers them on to do their very best,”
said Aly Fazzari.
The eighth grade team played against
Richland, Thursday, September 18. They
played all three games, and were successful in each one. Makenzie astounded
all with her amazing 21
serves in a row leading
to a 25-1 win.
“Volleyball is fun,
and takes effort. But
my expectations are to
have fun and win
games,” said Sadie
Jones. Natalie Brinson
also chimed in,
“Volleyball is a great
experience; my goal is to win games, work
hard, and to be a great team.” Serving as
Assumption’s athletic director Mr. Spiess
commented, “I really enjoy it; mostly I like
to see my past sixth graders doing sports
outside the classrooms.”
Good luck to both teams as they begin
their season!

~Irish Knights Football~
This year
we have a
total of 18
boys playing football,
ten 8th
graders and
eight 7th graders. The returning 8th
graders are Andrew, Kelson, Connor,
Kyren, Austin, Timmy, Josh, Mac, Jake,
and a new player who decided to turnout this year, Alvaro. The new 7th graders who are being introduced to middle
school football consist of Nate, Noah,
Tanner, Bobby, Bailey, Dawson, Ryan,
and Tim. The coaches for this year are
Jerry Anhorn Senior, Jerry Anhorn Junior,
Tim Meliah, and Matt Stroe. We also have
great younger students helping out with
water for the team. This year we will be
playing a total of six games. Central was
our first game and the coaches knew they
would be tough. Practice has been difficult this year because with fewer players
we all have to play a couple different positions. Coach Jerry Senior says if we all
work hard, he thinks we will be fine. We
have already had one injury to Kyren Morris who broke his tibia and fibula and
shifted his ankle.
Our first game against Central came to
a nail biting 37-28 conclusion. Our second game was a well played game with
Sager. They ended up winning 26-0.
Though a tough loss, the players took it
in stride and began preparation for the
next game in
their schedule.
With four
games left, the
football team
hopes to improve their
skills. By: Austin Richard
~Fun Food Drive~
~Heavenly Hot Lunch~
An honorable and worthy cause at Assumption is in process this week, the St.
Vincent DePaul Food Drive. The people in
charge of this event are Jake Wylie and Matthew Gerola in the 8th grade and all of the
third graders. Jake says “The food drive will be fun to work
with the third graders.” The days are September 22-26. On
Monday you bring canned soup, Tuesday peanut butter and
jelly, Wednesday tuna and canned meats, Thursday is rice/
pasta/beans, and Friday is boxed meals. All of this food will
help the food pantry at St. Vincent DePaul. Mrs. Michels
says, ”When you bring food, you are helping people in need.”
By: Sadie Jones
The hot lunch has been a hit!
The kindergartners give it two
thumbs up! Both Emmalyne
Jimenez in 4th grade and Riley
Graham in 2nd both like the spaghetti option. Josh Swanson in
8th grade says, “The spaghetti
was excellent.” Morgan Thomas
in 4th grade likes the corndogs. Some of the new food options
being served in the kitchen are the Waffle Sandwiches, Swedish Meatballs, Pork Sliders and Flatbread.
Ever wonder what pizza sales are for? The money that you
use to buy pizza helps with 8th grade end-of-the-year class trip.
So far, there have been a lot of pizza sales. Thank you for supporting the 8th grade class trip! Bon Appetit! By: Sadie Jones

~Dear Darla~
Dear Darla,
I would like to be an altar server, but I
am scared to try it. What should I do?
~Scared to Altar Serve
Dear Darla,
How do I get my classmate to stay
friends with me after we argue?
~Fighting Friends
Dear Darla,
How do I pick out a good book from
the library?
~Rampant Reader
Dear Scared to Altar Serve,
It’s okay if you are scared to altar
serve. Your parish provides training for
this. Have your parents check into it.
Once trained, you should talk to Mrs.
Michels or your teacher and they will
pair you with an older server to work
with you. Once you feel ready, Mrs. Michels will try and find a Mass for you to
serve! Good luck!
Dear Fighting Friends,
When you argue, you should first talk to
your friend and try to apologize to them.
Then if they are still mad, give them
sometime to cool off. After about a day,
talk to them again and if that doesn’t
work get an adult to help you make up
with your friend.
Dear Rampant Reader,
You should first figure out what type of
books you like. The library has a huge
variety of books including fiction, mystery, and fantasy, and science fiction.
Once you figure out what type of book
you like, talk to Mrs. Buckley or your
teacher and they will help you find a
great book!
