Choosing the right raised toilet seat
Gordon Ellis & Co are acknowledged experts in raised toilet seats. We have
a seat to suit almost every need, as we produce the widest range of seats of any
manufacturer.
Here is our easy guide for selecting the right seat:

In most cases, your knees and hips should be at the same height when sat on the toilet seat.
A seat that is too low can be uncomfortable and more difficult to stand up from.
1. Measure the distance between the floor and
the back of the thigh, just behind the knee.
This is the recommended seat height.
2. Measure the current height of the seat, and
subtract from the first measurement.
3. The difference between the two is the
amount of raise required.
Raised toilet seats come in 2 inch (5cm), 4 inch (10cm) and 6 inch (15cm) standard sizes.
Round down to find the nearest standard size.
FITTING
Most of our Raised Toilet Seats use brackets to hold
the seat in place on the toilet bowl. There are either
two, three or four brackets, which are designed to be
tightened by hand.
For security, our raised toilet seats are never fixed on top of
the original seat, but directly to the toilet pan.
please always check that it is securely attached before you
sit down.
This advice is intended as guidance and should not replace
a thorough risk assessment. If in any doubt, please seek
further information from an Occupational Therapist.
Some of our models, such as the Nobi and Big John, replace
the original seat. These are easily fixed like a regular toilet
seat, using the two existing holes in the back of the toilet
bowl. Clear instructions are included with all our seats, but

The Prima Raised Toilet Seat reaches the highest standards in injection moulded
toilet seats and is easy to clean, due to its concealed seam. To give the user
confidence, the seat is designed to be very stable in use. It fixes securely in three
places, with two side brackets and a drop nose at the front. Each side bracket
has over-moulded rubber grips to ensure a tight fit on to the toilet.

The Enterprise model acts as both a raised toilet seat
and a toilet surround rail, giving support and stability.The
arms support the user in a high position for easy transfer
and the 4” (100mm) raised seat makes it easier to stand
from the seated position.The seat is a comfortable one
piece moulding.The unique installation system allows the
seat to be used without taking off the original toilet seat.
An installation bracket is attached by loosening the seat
bolts, sliding the bracket into place, then re-tightening the
bolts. Once this bracket is in place, the seat can quickly be
installed and removed.
A solution for the embarrassing and unhygienic
accidents that can sometimes happen when men have
to sit to use the toilet. The P-Guard has two parts: a
soft plastic cup to deflect urine down into the toilet,
and a fixing bracket with flexible links, allowing the cup
to be positioned for individual needs or bent away. The
cup slides quickly on and off the fixing bracket, making
it possible for others to remove the P-Guard when
they are using the toilet, or for easy cleaning. It comes
with an adhesive pad to fix it to a standard toilet or
commode, or it can be permanently attached to a
raised toilet seat using screws (not included).

An Ashby Raised Toilet Seat is a simple way to reduce bending and the danger of
over-balancing for those with limited mobility.
It is perfect for healthcare issue, as the one piece moulding can be totally immersed for
cleaning, or sterilised in an autoclave. The bulk packs feature anti-bacterial protection as
standard, permanently moulded into the seat. An Ashby seat can be fitted securely to
most toilets in a matter of seconds, locked on with brackets that are easily adjusted

This attractive bath step raises the level outside the bath
to match the inside of the bath, helping to reduce the
possibility of over-balancing. It features a large surface
area with built-in pads to add grip, making the step

The Prima Bath Step is modular, meaning that it can
be used as an individual step at your choice of height,

The Langham Adjustable Platform Bath Step is modular,
allowing extra sections to be added or removed as
needed. Each section is 1 inch (25mm) thick and slots
securely into the section below, building into a secure,
stable platform. The step is supplied with four sections,
giving a basic step of 4 inches (100mm). Two steps can
be used to build a step up to 8 inches (200mm) tall.
The K40 step is not just useful as a bath step – it can also
be used in any room where a platform is needed, such as
beside a bed, or for correct positioning at a desk.
Assists when getting in or out of the bath, making it
easier and safer by reducing the danger of falling. The
step has two heights, depending on which way up it is
used. Choose the height which is closest to the base

The Prima Grab Bar range is high quality, in both
appearance and use. The outside of each grab rail is made
of white plastic with ribbed grips, to prevent the user’s
hand slipping down the bar, and are always warm to the
touch, unlike metal rails. The range has been ergonomically
designed with an oval cross-section, and features a high load
limit, made possible by a strong concealed aluminium core,
which runs through the middle of the rail.
The angled grab bars give the user a forearm support whilst
pulling up, which is useful for someone with painful hands
or wrists, as it distributes body weight through the forearm.
The screws and strong fixing points are covered by two end
caps, hiding them from view. The 16 inch (41cm) straight
grab rail matches the standard wall stud distance.

Prima Modular Shower Chair

The Prima Shower Chair is modular and can be made
up to meet the user’s particular needs. A complete chair
can be made into a simple shower stool, or a stool with
just arms. Each part simply clips together, without the
need for any tools.
The chair has a smooth contoured back rest, shaped to
give a more comfortable support for the user’s back.
Aluminium does not rust in the shower unlike many
steel shower stools and is very lightweight. The legs
are height adjustable, with rubber ferrules at the end
of each leg to provide grip and help prevent slipping,
even on wet surfaces. Holes in the metal work help to

Choosing a bath board

A hot bath is a relaxing pleasure which many take
for granted. If bathing has become difficult, there
are several ways to adapt your bath to make it
safer and easier, which are both quick to fit and
unobtrusive, helping to avoid substantial changes to
a bathroom.
Bath Boards
A bath board helps when stiff joints or poor
balance prevent someone from climbing over
the side of the bath, and is secured in place with
four sliding pillars. The user sits on the board, feet
outside the bath, then slides toward the middle of
the board, swinging their legs over the side. They
can then sit on the board, to shower, or lower
themselves down into the bath.
Bath Seats
Bath seats can be used on their own, or paired
with a bath board. Bath seats are secured to the
bottom of the bath with four large suckers. They
are particularly helpful for those who have difficulty
getting down all the way into the bath, but still
allows them to be in the warm water.

The Bathboard is made as a one-piece plastic moulding,
making it lightweight and strong, hygienic and easy to
use. It has a range of improvements over a standard
bathboard, such as a coccyx cutaway for comfort and a
soap dish at both ends. It is fixed to the bath using four
independent rubber ended pillars, which are positioned to
fit securely in a variety of different bath shapes.
The Cosby Bathboard is made up of two parts.
The top is a plastic seating area, which has been
designed without any slats or holes for comfort. This
is strengthened with waterproof plywood, making the
bathboard strong yet slim, at just 1 inch high (25mm).
To hold the bathboard in place, there are four pillars
which secure the board against the sides of the bath.
This bathboard has the greatest range of adjustment,
suitable for baths with an internal measurement of
480 - 700mm (19 – 27.5 inch).

The Derby Bath Seat has been designed to sit neatly in
a bath, with a smooth comfortable seat and sturdy ABS
construction giving durability and security. Four large
suckers hold firmly onto the base of the bath. The legs
are width adjustable to suit narrow baths and each has
a pull tab for easy removal when not required. The seat
has a light texture to help reduce the chance of slipping
off. It has no uncomfortable slats or ribs. Available in
two heights, 6 inch (150mm) and 8 inch (200mm).
The Cosby Bath Seat makes bathing easier for anyone
who has difficulty getting up or sitting down in the bath.
The sturdy but lightweight seat has a textured surface
to help prevent slipping and a cut away area at the front
for personal cleaning. The four legs have large suckers
to fix the seat securely to the base of the bath. Each

This enables people who are shorter in height to
feel secure in the bath, as they can rest their feet
against something solid. Four large suckers attach the
shortener to the end of the bath, to help prevent
someone from slipping down. Suction pads are fixed
to the base and sides of the bath. A hole is cut into
the base allowing water to enter, and a breather hole
under the handle allows air to escape, meaning that it
doesn’t interfere with filling or draining the bath.
The Bath Shortener is only suitable for baths with a
smooth, non-textured base.
Standard household taps can be difficult to turn,
especially for those with poor grip or arthritis. Derby
Tap Turners can solve the problem, by providing a large
textured handle which is easy to push, starting the
flow of water. They can be used on capstan and crystal
type taps, with no tools required. The screw-in handle
grips the tap with a soft non-slip lining on the inside,
providing the extra leverage needed to turn them with
ease. Colour coded in red and blue enabling those with
impaired eyesight to quickly identify the correct tap.

Plastic grab rails in contrasting red or blue colours to
give easy visibility and recognition. The straight rail can
be installed vertically or horizontally, for steadying or
transfer. If the rail is mounted vertically it will assist in
pulling up to standing, or if mounted horizontally it will
assist in pushing up and for general mobility. Each rail has
ribs and a light texture to provide extra grip even when
wet and, unlike metal rails, it will be warm to the touch.
It is recognised that grab rails are subject to strong
movement, therefore it is essential that they are fitted
according to the instructions.
The Red Ashby Step Two helps those with visual
impairment to locate the step. This makes bathing easier
and safer by reducing the danger of falling. The step has
two heights, depending on which way it is used. One
side gives a 4 inch (10cm) step, the other side gives a
higher 6 inch (15cm) step. Choose the height which
is closest to the base of the bath, to prevent overreaching. The Ashby Step Two provides a large standing
area for both feet, so the user can be steady before
stepping over the side of the bath. The textured surface
helps to reduce the risk of slipping.

The Big John Toilet Seat gives much more comfort for
anyone who finds a standard toilet seat uncomfortable.
At 19 inches (50cm), it gives increased support and
comfort without the need to buy a new toilet. It is
also slightly higher than a standard seat, with a raise
of 1.5 inches (3.8cm). Remove your existing seat and
attach the Big John through the toilet pan as usual,
using the two non-rust bolts included. It will fit to
virtually every toilet. Made to a high standard

Developed from the popular design of the Cosby
Clip-On Commode, providing a higher maximum user
weight of 250kg (39st/546lbs) and a 40% wider seat
area. The seat height can be set as low as 17 inches
(440mm), or it can be raised in five height increments
of 1 inch (25mm), to a maximum height of 22.5
inches (575mm). Cranked legs ensure a steady base. If
additional stability is needed, an optional floor fixing kit

The Cosby Heavy Duty Bathboard is similar to the
standard Cosby, but with a stronger board underneath –
