Session content
From tigers to elephants , the Teeth & Diets session brings pupils up
close with a range of skulls. Pupils will be encouraged to compare
and contrast the differences between herbivores, carnivores and
omnivores in investigatory group work. Pupils will report on their
conclusions and the tools that they used to come to a conclusive
answer on the identity of the skull. Once pupils have experienced
the forensic way in which to tell animals apart from their teeth we
investigate the nutritional requirements of animals in captivity.
During the session students
will:


Describe the functions of
different types of teeth using
appropriate scientific
language
Identify the nutritional needs
of a range of animals
Using the Zoo to support this session
The photocopiable worksheet on the reverse of this page encourages pupils to recall the terms used for
different animal diets and to identify animals that belong to each group.
Visit some of these animals at the zoo to discuss diets and predator/prey relations with your students:
Animal
Region
Grey Wolf
Europe
Red River Hogs
Africa
Greater One Horned Rhino
Asia
Great Grey Owls
Base Camp
Suggested classroom activity (for before or after your visit)
Make a list of all the food items that your class have eaten in one day and make a collage of different food groups.
Ask your students to imagine that they are a nutritionist and what they would recommend for your class, just like
the zoo nutritionist does for the zoo animals.
