Tehusalawany Abstract Many people still see women as the second class in the society. The identity of a woman is determined by society. The study uses two stories, Cerita Calon Arang and Janda dari Jirah which have same characters but, have different version of telling the events. The theory of Simone de Beauvoir, the Second Sex, helps this study to see how Cerita Calon Arang and Janda dari Jirah portray women’s identities based on their behavior and beauty. Society has its own standards about the behavior and beauty of women which according to Beauvoir limits women to experience more knowledge. The study focuses only on the main characters in both stories, Calon Arang and Ibu by analyzing how these characters interact with other characters. Calon Arang, a woman who is characterized as a cruel witch, is the Object (identity) because what she chooses for her life and how society judges her looks does not meet the standards. She is the symbol of evilness in her society so that people needs a hero, in this case is a man. On the other hand, Ibu, a woman who is characterized as good witch, is the Subject (identity). What she does and how society judges her looks is acceptable. People respect her. Being the Subject, it redefines the idea of Beauvoir that even though women live in what society expects her to be, she can still be the Subject. Key words : Simone de Beauvoir, identity, behavior, beauty, the Object, the Subject 1
