ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE AWARDS *** LANSING MATINEE MUSICALE AWARDS - The primary intent of these awards is to provide assistance for further study on the auditioned instrument or voice during the summer or the year immediately following the audition. *MID MICHIGAN YOUTH SYMPHONY PERFORMANCE AWARD -The winner may be invited to solo with the orchestra at a MMYS performance. All applicants are required to be members of the Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony in the current year of the award. Members are eligible for awards only on symphonic instruments. The winner will be expected to maintain membership in MMYS the following year. Updated 2/14/2017 MID MICHIGAN YOUTH SYMPHONY DIRECTORS' AWARDS FOR SUMMER STUDY - The intent of these awards is to provide assistance in paying for summer music study. This must be expressed in writing as part of the application. No audition is required. Apply to Symphony Directors. Obtain application from Symphony Director. ** L.M.M. 2017 ALL STAR AWARD - This is a new award! It is available to all previous Senior Category first place winners who are current PAS members. They may now compete with any other past first place winners from the Senior category. (STRINGS- BRASS- PIANO- VOICE etc.) MMYS Performance Award and Denise Award winners are eligible to apply for this category . ***ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE AWARDS -This award is available to any member of PAS with 100% attendance at PAS Club meetings (October, November, January, February and March) with an additional requirement to perform at one meeting. The “Request to Perform” forms are available on the website or from PAS Chair. (This requirement would not be met by performing at the Honors Recital in April) 1 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR AWARDS: ALL APPLICANTS MUST: Pay dues before first meeting of January 2017. Be a member in good standing for the current academic year (2016-2017) of Performing Arts Students Club Attend at least two meetings in the 2016-2017 school year prior to the awards application deadline. Student’s instructor must be a Lansing Matinee Musicale member, or pay a non-member instructor's fee of $40.00. Previous first place winners may not compete in the same award category. (However; they are eligible, this year, to advance to the next age category) The competition may be cancelled at the discretion of the Awards Chairperson if there are an insufficient number of entries. EACH APPLICANT: Will be allowed 10-15 minutes of performance time, depending on the category. Must provide his/her own accompanist and one original piece of music for the judges. Please number the measures. Two additional bound copies or photocopies are required for the judges (total of three). MMYS applicants may not enter Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony Award and another award on the same instrument in the same year. First place award may be won only once in the same category. MMYS students must be members of the Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony for one year and in good standing. See MMYS attendance policy and paid membership rules. Winners will perform and receive their awards at the Honors Recital April 23, 2017 Program Meeting. If unavailable for this event, the winner will be required to perform at the March 19, 2017 Meeting of PAS to receive their award. PIANO: Grades 5 and 6. Maximum of 10 minutes. Three selections in three different styles (concertos not permitted). All selections should be memorized. 1. Baroque 2. Classical Sonata or Sonatina movement 3. A choice of Romantic or Impressionistic or Contemporary PIANO: Grades 7-9 and 10-12. Maximum of 15 minutes. Three selections in three different styles (concertos not permitted). All selections should be memorized. 1. Baroque 2. Classical Sonata or Sonatina movement 3. A choice of Romantic or Impressionistic or Contemporary ART SONG: Minimum age 14. Maximum of 15 minutes. Three selections All selections should be memorized. 1. A foreign language art song 2. 20th or 21st Century English language art song (American, British or Canadian) 3. Art song of choice (No opera arias other than those included in art song collections and those treated as art songs) 2 MUSICAL THEATER: Minimum age 14. Maximum of 12 minutes. Three selections All selections should be memorized. 1. An up-tempo song that includes the ability to move or dance according to the character of the song (from a musical) 2. Song of contrasting style/ballad (from a musical) 3. Lyric style or contemporary monologue under three minutes STRINGS: Grades 5-6. Maximum of 10 minutes. Two selections One should be memorized and one piece must have accompaniment. 1. Baroque or Classical 2. Romantic or Contemporary STRINGS: Grades 7-9 and 10-12. Maximum of 15 minutes. Two selections One should be memorized and one piece must have accompaniment. 1. Baroque or Classical 2. Romantic or Contemporary WINDS and BRASS: Grades 7-12 –Maximum of 15 minutes. Two selections One should be memorized. 1. Baroque or Classical 2. Romantic or Contemporary PERCUSSION: Grades 9-12 -Maximum of 15 minutes. Three selections 1. A concert snare drum etude 2. A rudimental etude/solo 3. A two-mallet marimba or a four-mallet marimba piece, and either timpani or drum set. DANCE: Grades 7-12 Maximum of 12 minutes. A demonstration of allegro and lyrical movement in ballet, tap, lyrical, modern, jazz, hip hop, or folk dance, or a combination of styles in a finished performance. 2. A demonstration explaining the techniques appropriate to the dance styles being presented, using both terminology and physical demonstration. ORGAN: Grades 9-12 -All pieces played on the piano. 1. A piece by J.S. Bach from memory 2. One piece from the Romantic or Contemporary Period from memory 3. A Hymn played from a hymnal in four part harmony MARGARET DENISE PIANO AWARD: (EVEN YEARS ONLY) Grades 9-12. One selection each in the following categories: 1. Baroque 2. Classical Sonata 3. Romantic or Impressionistic 4. Contemporary, all memorized * There is no student attendance requirement; however, the student's teacher must be a member of both LMM, and the student must be a United States citizen.
