Eden ~ From the Garden
Karma is the Sanskrit word for action. Karma is a lifestyle that promotes
positive thinking and actions. It also employs self-reflection to fix the
problems in one’s life. As you sow, so shall you reap. There are 12 laws
of Karma in total; here are the last four laws of Karma:
9. The Law of Here and Now
• One cannot be in the here and now if they are looking backward to
examine what was or forward to worry about the future.
• Old thoughts, old patterns of behavior, and old dreams prevent us from
having new ones.
10. The Law of Change
• History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change
our path.
11. The Law of Patience and Reward
• All Rewards require initial toil.
• Rewards of lasting value require patient and persistent toil.
• True joy comes from doing what one is supposed to be doing, and
knowing that the reward will come in its own time.
12. The Law of Significance and Inspiration
• One gets back from something whatever they put into it.
• The true value of something is a direct result of the energy and intent
that is put into it.
• Every personal contribution is also a contribution to the Whole.
• Lesser contributions have no impact on the Whole, nor do they work to
diminish it.
• Loving contributions bring life to and inspire the Whole.

April is the season of Spring...small animals that hibernate are usually
coming out of their burrows in April. The birds fly back from the south
and bees and butterflies begin to gather nectar from the first flowers of

The Strength of Jubilee
Rose K. spent 47 years working in health care in Saskatoon. For 23 of those years she worked as a
nurses’ aide at the Saskatoon Sanatorium. She later worked in housekeeping at Saskatoon City
Hospital. Today, the 89-year-old resides in Stensrud LodgeGone of two long-term care homes
operated by Jubilee Residences Inc. Rose no longer has the ability to walk or speak and requires
support with her day to day living. While staff at Stensrud Lodge provides most of her care, Rose also
looks to volunteers like Ann Richards for support. Ann volunteers three mornings a week in the
dining room on the second floor of Stensrud Lodge. It’s a place she’s very familiar with, having retired
from Stensrud in 2015 after 15 years working as a special care aide. “You can’t be here for 15 or 16
years and suddenly be gone,” says Ann. “I had a few months away and then realized what I
was missing.” She knew support was needed in the dining room so she offered her services from
7:30a.m. to 10a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. “I knew they were in such dire
straits for assistance up here in the dining roomD especially with those who can’t assist
themselves,” says Ann. Volunteering has given Ann the chance to reconnect with the residents
and staff of Stensrud Lodge. It’s also been good for her marriage. “I came here to volunteer and
then we weren’t together 24/7 because he is retired as well,” jokes Ann. Through her
volunteerism in the dining room, she has gotten to know many of the residents’ needs and their likes
and dislikes. “It’s more than just assisting them,” says Ann. “You also get familiar with who is
diabetic, who likes their drink in a tall cup versus a short cup.” Or, as in Rose’s case, who likes
to drink their prune juice through a straw. Ann’s keen observation skills have also come in handy
from time to time. ‘Once in a while I will say to the nurse, “I think this person needs whatever”.’
“So, those skills are still there,” says Ann. At the end of her shift, Ann goes home with a sense of
fulfillment. There are times, however, she leaves feeling frustrated. “I’m frustrated sometimes but
it’s not because of this place, it’s because of the needs,” says Ann. “There are just not enough
hands a lot of days.” She knows more volunteers would make a difference. “Sometimes I think
our seniors get forgotten because once they are in a long-term care facility, people think they
get that care but the staff here are going everywhere,” says Ann. “They have a lot of work that
they need to get done so it’s nice when somebody else can actually sit down and have a few
minutes more to help out and not be worried they have to get to the next resident.” Those few
extra minutes can make a huge difference to a resident’s quality of life and can also help to put a
family members’ mind at ease. “Knowing Mom is well cared for allows me the freedom to do
more things with my children and grandchildren,” says Rose’s daughter Illa D. “I’m blessed.
We’re blessed to have Ann in our lives. I know that Ann brings a smile to Mom’s face.”
“Once in a while I will say something and all of a sudden she will start laughing,” says Ann.
“So you know there is a connection there.” A connection and a genuine appreciation for Ann’s
support. After all, if there is one thing Rose’s almost five decades working in health
care taught her, its knowing full-well what good care looks like.

TLR
1-2-3-Command
Communication is vital to ensure a smooth, coordinated move. In the Transferring Lifting Repositioning
(TLR®) program©, any move performed by more than one person must be done using the "1-2-3command" approach. In addition, when one worker is performing a TLR client moving technique
appropriate for one worker, the “1-2-3-command” is also used.
The “1-2-3” count provides a cue for each worker, and even the client, that the moving task is about to
be performed.
The “command” is the action that the team is performing, such as “slide”, “up”, “down”.
The primary worker will count 1-2-3 and say the command, such as "1-2-3-slide" or "1-2-3-up", etc.
It is very important that the action being performed is indicated in the command.
Communicating with Client and Co-worker(s) During the Move
Prior to the move, the worker(s) and the resident understand the move to be performed. The primary
worker communicates with the client and assistant/co-worker(s) during the moving technique by:
• giving short, clear commands one at a time throughout the moving technique
• signaling the count in the moving technique (e.g., “1-2-3-Stand” or “1-2-3-Sit”)
The “1-2-3-command” is used
at the beginning of the moving task, such as: “1-2-3-Stand”
throughout the moving task, such as: “1-2-3-Step”
and again at the end of the moving task, such as: “1-2-3-Sit”
Be Accountable: Choose safety - work safe - and go home injury free!
The Reception Office in Porteous Lodge and in Stensrud Lodge will be closed to
perform fiscal year end duties on: Monday, April 3rd.
All Offices will be closed for Easter on Friday, April 14th and Monday, April 17th.
COMMUNICATION TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS—Tips for Communicating with a Person with
Dementia
Paranoia
Seeing a loved one suddenly become suspicious, jealous or accusatory is unsettling. Remember, what
the person is experiencing is very real to them. It is best not to argue or disagree. This, too, is part of
the dementia—try not to take it personally.
• If the confused person suspects money is “missing,” allow her to keep small amounts of money in a
pocket or handbag for easy inspection.
• Help them look for the object and then distract them into another activity. Try to learn where the
confused person’s favorite hiding places are for storing objects, which are frequently assumed to
be “lost.” Avoid arguing.
• Take time to explain to other family members and home-helpers that suspicious accusations are a
part of the dementing illness.
• Try nonverbal reassurances like a gentle touch or hug. Respond to the feeling behind the
accusation and then reassure the person. You might try saying, “I see this frightens you; stay
with me, I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Laundry
This is a reminder for all tenants to be courteous when using the washers and dryers in Cosmo
and Eamer. Please DO NOT take other tenant’s laundry out of the washers or dryers. If you know
whose laundry it is you can politely ask them to come and take the clothing out. Please, if at all
possible, stay in the laundry room when you are doing your laundry or set an alarm to come back
at a certain time so you are not tying up the washers or dryers for extended periods of time.
Please be considerate of other tenant’s time and if people are waiting to use the machines be
flexible. One tenant shouldn’t be washing 5 loads at one time when 2 or 3 other tenants are
waiting. Thank you.
Remembering When
Watch for posters about an great presentation called Remembering
When. This program is put on by the Saskatoon Fire Department and the Council on Aging.
The program is approximately 45 minutes in length and uses nostalgia to incorporate the safety
message in a fun engaging way. Did you know that after age 65, a person is twice as likely to be
killed or injured in a fire. That number grows to three times as likely after age 75 and four times as
likely after age 85. Statistics for falls are as equally disheartening; 30% of people over the age of
65 have a fall each year and that as a person ages, the likelihood of having a fall increases to one
in two over the age of 80. We know that preventing a fall or a fire is critical to ensuring that older
adults remain in their home for as long as possible. This is an important presentation that we hope
everyone can attend.

On Wednesday, March 8, 2017 the Jubilee Board of Directors met at Queen’s House of Retreats
due to an outbreak in each of the lodges. The following is a summary of the meeting. The Board
discussed the financial statements for the nine month period ended December 31, 2016. Board
Members began the Accreditation Canada Governance process in January and today the criteria for
the third standard was discussed related to functioning as an effective governing body. Board
Members each signed a code of conduct statement that acknowledges his/her role and
responsibilities, including expectations of the position and legal duties. A risk management
framework timeline was presented and discussed to advise the board how and when the major risk
reporting will be provided over the course of the board year. Good governance practice and
accreditation demand a process of Board self-evaluation. A process for board self-evaluation
begins in March. The results are used to guide the Board’s work in proposing members and to set
policy direction and establish annual objectives. The evaluation summary is used to develop a plan
for 2017 – 2018 initiatives and objectives that management and the board will carry out. A list of
projects for 2017 – 2018 for the Stensrud Lodge, Eamer Court, Cosmopolitan Court, Porteous
Lodge and Mount Royal Court have been approved by the Board. The Board continues to advocate
for appropriate funding for long term care. The Board of Directors remain focused to ensure delivery
of quality care as well as safety of the residents in a caring community.
Grief never ends...but it changes. It’s a passage—not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of
weakness, nor a lack of faith … it is the price of love.
Never sacrifice 3 things: - your family
- your heart
- or your dignity

In life, if you are blessed to live long enough, you will lose things. The hardest is when loved ones
pass away, it never gets easier and it shouldn’t. Those scars are reminders of the love you shared.
Even though we lose we can’t let it be an excuse to destroy ourselves. We live on with their memory
and when we live the best life we can, that is how we honor them. Yes it will be painful, but that time
you shared is untouchable. Go out and live, honor your loved ones and may they live on through you.
Enjoy what life has given you, you are the recipient of this gift of life!
