THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO
By Chase Laurita, Mason,
Amanda Sedano, Caitlyn Robles
and Hannah
Person vs. Person
-In the Cask of Amontillado, there was only
one conflict; person vs. person. Montresor, the
main character, goes about how he was
insulted by a ‘friend’, and that is when the
reader meets Fortunado. In the beginning of
the story, Fortunado thinks of Montresor as a
good friend and didn’t know that he desliked
him so much. Because the insult was so big,
according to Montresor, he decides to take
Fortunado into one of the catacombs and cage
him in alive- or killing him.
Setting
-The setting changes only once in
the story, where Montresor finds
Fortunado attending the carnival
party- which also, back in the day
‘carnival’ symbolized as freedom’.
He ends up taking Fortunado down
the Montresor family catacomb and
into the more unhealthy small
spaces.
Theme:
-The theme of this story would be
‘straightforward tragedy’ because it’s
a rather small tragedy than a lot
others. And tragedy, because
Fortunado was tricked to his death.
Literary Elements:
Foreshadowing- this is when Montresor takes
Fortunado to the catacomb and says that he would
be given wine. The reader should know that there
would be expensive wine in a catacomb, where air
is sealed away from the recesses.
Metaphor- ‘I continued as, was my wont, to smile in his
face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was
at the thought of his imitation.’ This was a metaphor
because he hinted it as an imitation.
Symbol- One of the symbols in the story would be
Fortunado’s hat with the bell at the top, because the
carnival in the beginning was a celebration of
‘freedom’. The bell of his hat should have
symbolized freedom, but instead it symbolized being
trapped and not set free.
Things you should
remember:
• Montresor killed Fortunado because he was
insulted (the reason, we’re not sure.)
• Amontillado is a fine, expensive wine.
• This takes place in the Montresor catacomb.
• The theme is a tragedy or ‘small’ tragedy
• The hat symbolizes both freedom and or ‘caged
in’.
• Fortunado thought Montresor was joking
because he was drunk.
• *Trowel – a shovel type tool
