GOAL 1
to actively engage students in the life of the school
1.
The school will sponsor and organize student activities such as:

school travel
●
music club
●
business competitions
●
school dances
●
drama
●
intra murals
●
varsity sports
2.
Hold a Friday afternoon Activity Day at least once a term.
3.
Organize activities and competitions in the core curriculum areas.
4.
Implement a reward system for student performance in curriculum
and non-curriculum areas of the school.

examples of recognition include: certificates, stickers, public
acknowledgement

give special recognition to students who significantly improve
marks. Recognition should be given during mid-term and final

Promote items with the Lake Melville School logo.

Develop a House System.

start with an initial competition for four names

delegate each student to one of the four houses
●
student remains in the house for duration of the school life

each house will adopt colours
●
house t-shirts and caps can be worn at special events such as
house games, Education Week activities, etc.

points would be awarded to student for achievement in
curricular and extra curricular activities
●
trophy awarded to the house with the most points at the end of
each year
●
students in the winning house would receive a special bonus or

Strategies
1.
Host a Parent/School Activity Day at least twice a year, emphasizing

In the September Meet ‘n’ Greet, make time available to explain to
parents school policies, code of expectations, academic standards and
evaluation procedures.

Lake Melville School realizes that individuality exists in society and
a positive culture will only occur when diversity is valued and a
learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all
of its staff and students are respected and promoted to assist them in
reaching their full potential. We feel that all involved should be safe,
comfortable and accepted while involved in any and all school
activities.

Lake Melville School is dedicated to providing an environment that is
conducive to learning and provides an inclusive environment which
promotes equality for all students and staff and will not discriminate
regardless of age, race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation
including heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, lesbian and
questioning.

Teacher commitments to maintain student expectations
1.
Be firm and fair in implementing the code of expectations

Inform students of regulations, routines, expectations, and
consequences for inappropriate behavior

Inform students of academic standards and evaluation schemes

Keep accurate records of students’ behavior and academic
performances
5.
Communicate records to students, parents, and school administration

Report unacceptable behavior to parents as soon as possible

Respect the confidentiality of students and staff members

Goal 5
to establish guidelines for eliminating inappropriate language and
behavior
Inappropriate Language and Behavior
1.
Examples of inappropriate language:
●
use of profanity
●
●
2.
degrading or hurtful remarks
use of racial/derogatory comments
Examples of inappropriate behavior:
●
failure to listen or follow teacher’s instructions
●
disruption of classes by constant chatting or talking to other
students
●
chewing gum or consuming food during class without
permission of the supervising teacher
●
bullying/cyberbullying or annoying other students
●
leaving one’s seat or classroom without the teacher’s
permission
●
abusing certain privileges such as going to the rest rooms
●
open defiance of the teacher through back answering or
deliberately challenging the teacher’s authority
●
refusal to do seat work, homework and research assignments
●
the deliberate destruction of personal or school property
●
cheating
●
smoking either inside the building or on school grounds
●
theft
●
cell phones: inappropriate usage
Discipline referrals and process
1.
Record information regarding the student’s unacceptable/
Inappropriate behavior
2.
Send information to the principal using written incident reports
3.
Students who fail to comply with acceptable standards of behavior
will be asked to leave the classroom and report to the principal’s
office
4.
Behavior infractions will be recorded by the principal and placed in
the student’s file
5.
Principal will discuss the situation with the teacher and students
6.
Parents will be notified in writing, along with a copy of the incident
report, in which parents and students will be invited to meet and work
on the problem
7.
Students required to leave the classroom for unacceptable behavior
may be suspended from school
8.
The duration of the suspension will be at the discretion of the
principal
9.
Parents will be notified in writing about the details of the suspension
10.
The Director of Education for the Labrador School Board will be
notified in writing
11.
When suspended, the student will stay away from the school and all
school activities. He/she will not be permitted to make-up tests,
assignments, and work
Homework Policy
The following guidelines will be used for setting homework.
1.
The assignment of homework will be used to extend the classroom
learning. It will only be used to reinforce what was learned in the
class, and to provide enrichment. Homework cannot be used as a
punishment for misbehavior
2.
All students are expected to complete homework assignment at an
acceptable standard and on time
3.
The school will implement a reward system for students who
successfully complete homework
4.
Parent/Guardian will be contacted by letter/phone if homework
assignments are not completed
Appeal Process
Every student has the right to appeal any disciplinary action maybe
considered unfair. The appeal process is as follows.
1.
Arrange a private meeting with the teacher, student, and parent to
discuss the problem in a reasonable and appropriate manner
2.
If the matter is not resolved to the satisfaction of everyone, arrange a
meeting with the discipline committee
3.
After consulting all involved, the principal will decide on a course of
action.
4.
Parents, students, and teachers have the right to appeal the principal’s
decision to the Director of Education for the Labrador School Board
