BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
John Randolph, a native of Pennsylvania, was born September 9, 1857. He
moved, with his family, to South Carolina during the Civil War and to Riley County,
Kansas, in 1870. In 1881 John Randolph was appointed principal of the public schools in
Girard, Kansas – a position he occupied for six years. In 1886 Randolph resigned his
educational position to enter the law profession with Girard attorney, James Brown.
Following his passage of the Kansas bar examination in 1887 Randolph settled in
Pittsburg, Kansas, to practice his new profession.
Randolph’s legal career thrived and he was involved in numerous community
projects and movements such as the establishment of the Pittsburg Public Library. He
was no less ardent in local political campaigns on behalf of the Republican Party, and in
1888 he was appointed to fill the position of city attorney. Randolph was frequently a
delegate to city, county, state and national conventions.
Randolph married Theresa Gould in 1890. She was active in numerous civic
organizations and was librarian at the Pittsburg Public Library for many years. Three
sons were born to John and Theresa, including Vance Randolph, the noted folklorist and
expert on Ozarks culture.
