 Examples
1.
Convert 7.5 million to a regular number.
Using Logic:
In computers, kilo
represents 1,024 (2 10 );
mega means 1,048,576
(2 20 ); and giga stands for
1,073,741,824 (2 30 ).
7.5 million = 7 million + 0.5 million
= 7 million + 1 a million
2
= 7,000,000 + 500,000
= 7,500,000
Using a Process:
Change the decimal point into a comma, and then attach as
many zeros as needed to make the answer come out between 7
and 8 million:
7.5 million = 7,500,000

2.
Convert 7 1 trillion to a regular number.
4
Using Logic:
7 1 trillion = 7 trillion + 1 trillion
4
4
= 7,000,000,000,000 + 250,000,000,000
= 7,250,000,000,000
Using a Process:
First convert the fraction to a decimal: 7.25 trillion
Change the decimal point into a comma, and then attach as
many zeros as needed to make the answer come out a little over
7 trillion:
7,250,000,000,000
3.
Convert 15 3 gigawatts into a regular number with basic units.
4
15 3 gigawatts
4
=
15.75 gigawatts
=
15.75 billion watts
=
15,750,000,000 watts

but we often look so long and so
regretfully upon the closed
door that we do not see
the one which has
opened for us.”
- Alexander Graham Bell
