I was living and grow up in refugee for thirteen years in a place with
no justice, no freedom, no light, and no truth. When I had a change to go back
home in Cambodia, I had always dreamed of having higher education so that I
can be a productive person for the society. However, in Cambodia, higher
education for a girl was discouraged, so I found myself at a disadvantage. After
I graduated from high school, my parents never let me go to college. People
from my culture believe that girls do not deserve a high education.
When I became a U.S. citizen, I found myself with freedom of speech,
religion and the justice I had not been given in my own country. I already know
that higher education is very important. It offers benefits of knowledge that can
provide people with a better life. Therefore, it is important to position oneself
to be involved in the field of higher education. I believe what America’s people
believe, which is that nothing can stop people from achieving their goals if they
are willing to put forth the effort. So, one day, I ran into one of my fellow
Cambodian who happens to work for Stark State College. With all the help
and encouragement from her, I was allowed to register classes at Stark State
College.
College is the place to attain one’s goals and a higher level of
education. If one is disappointed in his/her personality or character, college will
help him/her to make changes. College will enhance one’s individual selfassurance, determination, responsibility, and other characteristics. Moreover,
when one’s become a college student, you also increase your intelligence,
sophistication, and organization skills, depending on how he/she applies
yourself.
In the field of higher education, there is a great amount of material to
consider. Every class in Stark State, the professor provides many techniques,
and each professor has his own style. Professors study every day to find out
how they can help their students achieve success in their courses. Professors
give students handouts, office schedules, websites that relate to the course,
class syllabi, and schedules for quizzes or exams. All of these materials are
tools to help students attain success in college. Besides school providing the
student resource to help student success as well.
The amazing part of my experience in high education was how to be a
good student, I had to attend classes. Moreover, I had to listen and do what my
instructors said. I went to every class. After my classes, I spent my time doing
my homework, and then I went to work. When I came home from work, I tried
to finish the rest of my homework. After that, I had to study and prepare for
other classes for the next day. I kept doing it every day, and for weeks.
Sometimes I took ESL classes to improve my language skills. Also, attendance
is very important. It promotes an individual’s self-confidence, determination,
responsibility, accountability, and discipline.

Disability Support Services (DSS)

As we enter into a new semester, it is important to remember to
stay organized and focused. If you start having problems, instead
of waiting until it is too late, make an appointment with your
faculty advisor. He or she may be able to suggest programs which
our great college has to offer. Also do not forget to take
advantage of the college’s many tutoring sites.
For the students who have any type of disability, I would highly
recommend making an appointment with Disability Support
Services. I have personally worked with this office and would say
they are all sweet people.
In summation, I will leave you this thought…Stay the course and
success is well within reach!

RANDOM FACTS
Challenge to the Students!
This is a challenge for all students to submit some kind of random fact. It could be a law, a joke, or just ask a
question that you would like to see answered within the school in the next issue! This month’s Random Facts
are from Corri S.-Criminal Justice Major.
Silly Laws:
Alabama: It is illegal to have an ice cream cone in your back pocket at
any time.
Massachusetts: At a wake, it is illegal to eat more than 3 sandwiches.
Wisconsin: Butter substitutes are not allowed to be served in state
prisons. *side note, they must be serious about their butter, there are
many laws about it.*
Silly man, burritos are for eating…
Erik Brown, a 36-year-old Florida man angry at his 16-year-old brotherin-law, is arrested for assault…with a burrito.
“According to the arrest affidavit attained by the Smoking Gun, Brown's
16-year-old brother-in-law was arguing with his mother. The teen was
demanding his mom bring him the burrito, and for some reason this
upset Brown. So he grabbed the stuffed tortilla and threw it at his face.”
