Introduction
Building the APICS Brand
As the leading professional association for supply chain and operations management, APICS is the premier
provider of research, education and certification programs that enable individuals and their organizations to
learn how to advance supply chain excellence, innovation and resilience.
We understand that supply chains are a strategic asset. Companies that build smart, high-performing supply
chains know success depends upon rigorous management and the application of best practices. In much the
same way, carefully managing APICS’s professional image will build our brand into a strategic and valuable
asset. Consistency in the presentation of our external image across all media reinforces our leadership
position and communicates our commitment to excellence.
The APICS Digital Brand Identity Standards contains what you need to know to support the growth of our
brand on an APICS district or chapter website. These guidelines should be used in conjunction with the
APICS Brand Identity Standards. Following these guidelines will ensure that we present our organization in a
way that augments our brand equity and increases our market impact.
Please contact us with any questions you may have about our digital brand standards. Together we can
increase APICS’s brand awareness, reputation and equity.

Introduction
The APICS Brand Advantage
A brand can be among the most valuable assets a company owns. In a crowded marketplace, a brand can be
a primary means of differentiation. However, a brand requires active management to achieve its full potential.
Brands are much more than a name and logo. Managed correctly, a brand will provide a sustainable competitive
advantage, a positive placeholder in the minds of target audiences, and equity that upholds premium pricing.
Strong, well-managed brands offer market strength in the face of economic, industry or company adversity.
They inspire customer trust, loyalty and additional business. They also help people understand what an
organization values.
The APICS Digital Brand Identity Standards provides the foundation for brand excellence and success in the
online realm. This guide establishes criteria and sets forth the ground rules to present a consistent APICS
brand experience to the marketplace. This guide is intended for anyone who manages, writes, edits or
designs a website or online collateral.
The APICS Digital Brand Identity Standards cannot—and is not intended to—provide a solution for every situation.
If you have a branding question, please contact the APICS Marketing team at [email protected].

Creating a Consistently Excellent Online Experience
For many of our members, potential members, prospects and customers, the very first experience they have
with APICS will be with a chapter or district website. A colleague could forward a link to an event, or a
prospective member could find a site via an online search. It’s most important, therefore, that when someone
reaches an APICS affiliated site they have a positive experience. This first digital touch point could entice
someone to join, or lead to an immediate exit.
The site elements APICS has chosen are intended to offer visitors a consistently excellent experience that
highlights the chapter and district connection with APICS, yet allows for local personalization. It’s a simple yet
strong design that offers flexibility. The design was purposefully intended to be easy to consistently apply and
update across various content management systems.
High-resolution files for web development purposes are available from the APICS Marketing team. To request
the files, please contact the APICS Marketing department at [email protected].

Site Conventions and Guidelines
Following Best Practices to Create a Highly Functional Site
While it’s easy to focus on the design elements, the images and the content, it’s often the attention to site
organization that separates a great website from a good one.
By following these standard conventions and guidelines, your site will offer a better user experience and
become easier to manage and update. Over time, these practices will improve your site search engine
optimization, too.
APICS Digital Brand Identity Standards Overview
Version 1.0
October 1, 2013
20
3.1
Site Conventions
GENERAL
Site Names. Site names in the header and the title tag should be written using title case. Call the site “APICS Cleveland
Chapter,” not “APICS CLEVELAND CHAPTER.”
Horizontal Navigation. Items in the horizontal navigation must be written using title case. For example, do not use
“ALL CAPS”; instead, use “All Caps.” Menu items should be a maximum of two lines of text that will wrap. Horizontal
navigation should be used only on sites with four to eight tabs. Sites with fewer than four tabs or more than eight should
use the left navigation.
LINKS
When creating pages and links, use hyphens and not underscores in the URLs to separate words or numbers.
The reason behind this guideline is purposeful and outlined below:
1. Readability. As part of the template’s CSS, links have text decoration set to blue (#0068AC) and not underlined in body
copy, which means that there is no line under the links. Links that are displayed in a bulleted list should appear in blue
(#0068AC) text, with no underline on hover. The hover color is set to dark gray (#6A737B).
2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google recommends using hyphens instead of underscores in URLs. For example, if a
URL contains “keyword1_keyword2,” Google will only return that page if the user searches for “keyword1_keyword2” (which
almost never happens). However, if you use hyphens in your URLs (e.g., “keyword1-keyword2”), that page can be returned if
the user searches for “keyword1,” “keyword2,” and even “keyword1 keyword2”.
We also recommend that all links be written using lower case letters and should not include any spaces.

Additonal Guidelines
LINK TEXT
Embed links in your sentences and avoid copying and pasting the URL into your text. For example, if you
are advertising the events schedule, you might say: “Our events schedule is consistently updated; be sure to check
it frequently.”
EMAIL LINKS
Email links must be labeled as “email” and/or use the email address as the link text. If used in a narrative, then you may use
the person’s name as the link text, provided it is clear that you are supplying a contact resource.
Internal vs. External LinKS
All links to any site in the chapter or district subdomain, including links to another page within your site, should open in the
same window. Links to chapter or district websites should use the non-www URL as per the subdomain standards. Links to
external third-party sites should open in a new window. Remember to check your external links periodically to make sure
that the pages you are linking to are still live; this helps you avoid frustrating your users by taking them to a broken link.
ALL PAGES SHOULD HAVE THE
FOLLOWING ELEMENTS
• Link to the home page from the logo; this
link should open in the same window.
• Always include the area code for all
phone numbers.
• Email addresses must be clickable.
• No flyout menus in navigation.
All sites are subject to review by the Marketing
Services department to ensure compliance with
the above standards.
“Back to Top” Links. When creating “Back to Top” anchor links for pages with longer content, use “#” as your link.
For example: Back to Top

Additonal Guidelines
CONTACT FORM
Individual contacts should be listed on all chapter or district sites. In addition, all of these sites should include a contact
form. This form must be accessible via the utilities links at the upper right of the page in the green header (just underneath
the contextual home link). The following components should be included in the form:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
To (multiple categories may be used)
Your name
Your email address
Subject
Message (text box with 500-character limit)
Send a copy of this message to yourself (optional checkbox)
CAPTCHA (prevents spam)
All fields above, with the exception of “send a copy of this message to yourself,” are required. Please contact APICS for form
suggestions to embed on your site. Google, Wordpress and Wufoo all offer embed options.
LOGOS
The appropriate APICS logo must be used at all times. To view our logo standards, please visit the Marketing
website at apics.org/cbox.
IMAGES
All images should be resized before uploading them to the server. Don’t rely on HTML width and height attributes.
Alternative Text (alt text). The use of alt text is required, which describes the content of the image whenever you use images
on your page. Alt text is required for ADA compliance (this text is read aloud to site visitors who use screen readers) and is
displayed if a user has images turned off in their browser. Including alt text is an accepted standard among web developers.
• Tool Tip: When using an image for a link, be sure to include a tool tip by using the “title” attribute.
• Uploaded images should be a minimum of 72 dots per inch (dpi) in resolution.

Additonal Guidelines
FILES, FOLDERS AND DOCUMENTS
• Documents should open in a new window. Open
format (PDF, txt, rtf, csv) files are preferred. If you
wish to upload an attachment, make sure your
file name is written in all lower case letters, and
spaces are separated with a hyphen. All online
content must meet ADA guidelines.
• PDF is the preferred document type for all documents you upload. File names should not contain
any special characters or spaces. File names with
multiple words should be separated with a dash.
• All documents moved during the web migration
process will remain intact in both name and file
type to ensure linkage is not broken for other
sites linking to those files. Moving forward, please
adhere to the proper file type and naming conventions noted above.
• The maximum file size for an uploaded image
should be no more than 1000K and documents
should be no more than 2MB.
APICS Digital Brand Identity Standards Overview

DIRECTORY STRUCTURE
A directory structure helps you organize similar
content in common areas. It also allows you to enter
keywords directly into your URL. This assists with
search engine optimization and allows your site to be
spidered and re-indexed by search engines.
Avoid Flat Directories. A flat directory is one in which
each page can be found directly off the root. Flat
directories make it difficult for users to find relevant
content and understand what is most important in
the site’s hierarchy. An example of a flat directory
might look like this:
The Three Click “Rule.” When creating your
subdirectories, bear in mind the three click
“rule.” Many web developers will tell you to
keep your content within three clicks of your
home page. This not only makes it easier for
users to find what they need on your site, but
also avoids burying the content too deeply in
your directory structure. The key is to find the
right balance between logical organization and
subdirectory overload.
Group Like Content. Creating subdirectories allows
you to group like content into similar “buckets.” The
subdirectory acts like a keyword or tag that search
engines respond to when a query is made. It also
helps users understand the relationship between the
different pages in a section. Here’s an example:

Building and Maintaining Site Appearance
While it’s tempting to use all the colors in the palette or make changes to typefaces to add extra emphasis or
character, a consistent application of color and type will reward you with a site that’s crisp, clear and visually
balanced.
These guidelines will help you create and maintain sites similar to the examples.

Colors and Fonts
COLOR
The approved web color palette is based on the colors developed as part of the print standards at APICS.
The approved web colors are presented below with their corresponding hexidecimal code.
The lighter colors are ideal for background colors of blocks for placement in sidebars or other regions. The darker
colors work best for horizontal lines, block borders and page title embellishments.

#0068AC
#009DDC
#6A737B
