120,000 Servings of Protein to Capital Area Food Bank
Feeding the Hungry Coast-to-Coast Tour Helps Food Bank Meet Increased Demand
Washington, DC, December 8, 2010 — The Capital Area Food Bank will be able to distribute
120,000 servings of protein to residents in need thanks to a generous donation to be delivered today
from Smithfield, Food Network Star Paula Deen and the United Food and Commercial Workers
Union. The donation is part of the ‘Feeding the Hungry’ coast-to-coast tour, which will donate
nearly 20 million servings of protein over three years to Feeding America – The Nation’s Food
Bank Network.
“The need for the food bank and our partner agencies is greater than ever,” said Lynn Brantley,
president and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank. “Food is the most basic human right and this
donation of protein will help us ensure that those struggling to get enough food to eat have access to
quality, nutritious food.”
The ‘Feeding the Hungry’ initiative is part of Smithfield’s ‘Helping Hungry Homes’ campaign that
was established to provide hunger relief to families in need. More than 1.6 million pounds of
protein will be delivered to the food bank over the next three years to help nourish residents
struggling with hunger in the Washington metro region. The food bank to date has received over
80,000 pounds of protein through the ‘Helping Hungry Homes’ initiative.
