New Chicago
Bulls D-League
team to play in
Hoffman Estates
In November 2016, the Sears Centre
Arena in the Village of Hoffman Estates
will begin hosting the home basketball
games for the brand new Chicago Bulls
Development League team.
As one of the most successful National Basketball Association (NBA) franchises, the Chicago Bulls are well known
throughout the Chicago metropolitan area and beyond.
As such, the Bulls were seeking a location near Chicago to
launch a new NBA Development League (D-League) team.
The Bulls recently approached the Village and the Sears Centre Arena about locating a D-League franchise in Hoffman
Estates. Ultimately, discussions led to a new tenant license
approved by the Village Board in November 2015.
The NBA D-League began in 2001, and now – with the
addition of the new Bulls team – has expanded to 22 teams

across North America. The NBA D-League is comparable
to minor league baseball and hockey. Over half of the teams
are owned by an NBA parent team, and the others are owned
independently with affiliation to an NBA team.
D-League teams are stocked with potential NBA players, including draft picks, free agents and foreign players – all elite
athletes, but needing development. The NBA reports that 38
percent of NBA rosters at the end of the 2014-2015 season
had players that spent time in the D-League.

This monthly feature will highlight new
development and construction in
Hoff man Estates.
Poplar Creek Crossing retail building
2500 New Sutton Road
Construction of a new 8,000-square-foot
retail building is underway in the Poplar
Creek Crossing shopping center, located
at the southwest corner of routes 59 and
72. The building will be situated south of
Citibank and east of Buffalo Wild Wings,
and will cost upwards of $1 million to
construct.
The planned tenants are Starbucks and
Mattress Firm with room for one more
retailer. The Starbucks will include a
drive-thru and an outdoor seating area.
Once completed in 2016, the tenants will
join more than 75 stores and restaurants
operating in the Poplar Creek at 59/90
entertainment district.
Historian’s
notebook
This spring, the building located at 1070 N. Roselle Road
will be torn down to make way
for a McDonald’s. The building has been home to many
different businesses since it
was constructed in 1971. It
was originally built by Hoffman Homes – previously F&S
Construction, the builders of
Hoffman Estates – as their
first corporate headquarters.
Jack Hoffman, president
of Hoffman Homes, didn’t
want to build just homes. He
wanted to build a complete
community. First and foremost, he wanted to construct
homes that returning World
War II vets could afford.
Homes started going up in
Parcel A in 1955, then across
Higgins Road in Parcel B in
1956 and 1957. Twinbrook
and Fairview schools were the
first of many schools in the
newly developed neighbor-

hoods. James B. Conant High
School, the first secondary
school in Schaumburg Township, was built in 1964.
Hoffman Plaza, located on
the east side of Roselle Road
between Golf and Higgins
roads, opened in 1959 with a
Jewel Food Store, which was
much awaited by a community that had to travel to
Roselle or Palatine to shop for
groceries. A Walgreen Agency
Drug Store (Snyder’s), doctors’
offices and other retail stores
quickly filled the Plaza.
F&S Construction then built
the Golf Rose Shopping Center across from Hoffman Plaza
in 1963. Grants Department
Store, National Tea Grocery
Store and the Buttery Bakery
were some of the new additions to the growing town.
Golf Rose was also where the
Hoffman Homes corporate
headquarters opened in 1972.
In doing my research, I had
the privilege of talking with
Harry Buck, the project
manager for F&S Construction. He supervised the
construction of the Golf Rose
Shopping Center, and later
built the company’s corporate
headquarters. Harry is 90
years old, and remembered
so much about the building.
He told me that it was built
without any corners. He called
it the castle since it had a ramp
entrance with what looked like
a moat below. When I talked
with Buzz and Ed Hoffman,
Jack’s sons, they remembered
calling the building the submarine. Everyone was sad to
hear it would soon be gone.
It was great talking to the man
who had actually built the
building located at 1070 N.
Roselle Road.

Poplar Creek Crossing was built in 2006, and provides retail options

A message from Mayor McLeod
From the continued construction of the Barrington Road
interchange at I-90 to the recent announcement of a Bulls
D-League franchise coming to the Sears Centre Arena, this
has been one memorable year!
Over the past several weeks and months, the Sears Centre
Arena staff, led by General Manager Ben Gibbs, has put in a
tremendous amount of work to secure a Development League
partnership with the Chicago Bulls. Village staff and elected
officials have also worked hard to ensure this is a win-win for
all of Hoffman Estates. Read more about the new D-League
team on the cover of this issue.
Events and entertainment: Poplar Creek Crossing was bought in the
summer of 2014 by Pine Tree Commercial Realty. They are active
in the community, and provide free events for families and shoppers
of all ages, including fall festivals, stay-cation raffle packages and
a summer ice cream giveaway. A winter wonderland event is also
being planned for Friday, Dec. 11, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., which will
include live reindeer, hot cocoa and donuts, and carolers spreading
holiday cheer. They are also bringing back their “Elf on the Shelf”
social media campaign (#WheresBuddy) to give shoppers a chance
to win gift cards to stores in the center. Visit www.poplarprairie.com

Congratulations to the most recent graduating class of the
Citizen Fire Academy. The instructors of this course – as well
as those of our Citizen Police Academy – work very hard to
make these programs a success. Students learn about the inner
workings of both departments, which often leads to increased
volunteer involvement. The Citizen Police Academy will begin
its next session on Jan. 19, 2016. Check out our website for
details on how to register for upcoming Citizen Academies.

Estates? On Thursday, Dec. 3, the Village Trustees will join
me at GiGi’s Hugs + Mugs Café from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for
“Milkshakes with the Mayor” to draw attention to the issue of
Down syndrome.
Also, on Tuesday, Dec. 8, residents and their families at
Brookdale, a senior living complex in Hoffman Estates,
will enjoy a special get-together with me, the Village Clerk
and Trustees. We’ll be serving up peppermint ice cream – a
resident favorite.

Sister Cities culinary exchange
In October, six culinary students, their chef
and a teacher from L’Amandier School in Angoulême, France, visited Hoffman Estates.
They spent time touring various culinaryrelated companies in Chicagoland. They

Chamber of Commerce Bon Appétit Food
and Drink Festival by preparing French
appetizers. These guests were hosted by Dick
and Sandy Kruse, Brian and Sue Yarwood,
Cheryl and David Rogan, Sandy Rivera and
Rob Schwartz, and John and Mary Gorski.
The Village’s Sister Cities exchanges provide
a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and
cultures, and we are grateful to these families
for opening their homes to the students.

Questions to Code
Q: I’m going on vacation this winter, and will
be leaving my home unoccupied. How can I
be sure the winter weather doesn’t cause any
issues while I’m away?
A: Every winter, the Village receives a
number of reports of homes that suffer
from water damage caused by water
pipes bursting. In order to make sure
this doesn’t happen to you, you should
not turn your furnace off when you leave
your home. During the colder months,
it is wise to leave your thermostat set
around 70 degrees. Make sure your
furnace is in good working order by having it serviced before you leave, and open
sink cabinet doors to aid in air circulation around water pipes. If you will not
be home for an extended period of time,
shutting off the main water supply and
draining all of the water from the pipes is
highly recommended.

Q: What is the best way to ward off germs
and viruses during flu season?
A: The most important thing to remember
is to wash your hands often and correctly!
Wash your hands before eating, after handling money, after blowing your nose, after
using the toilet and after a diaper change,
after touching animals, and anytime they
feel unclean. Use soap (any kind) and
warm water, and wash all over your hands
for as long as it takes to sing the alphabet
song. Waterless, alcohol-based handsanitizing gel may be used when soap and
water are not available.

sales (after the per-game fee is paid), as well as
all proceeds from merchandise sales and their
game day advertising/sponsorships. The Sears
Centre Arena will receive proceeds from concessions, as well as some additional revenue
from high-ticket sale games. The team is
expected to secure local practice space, ensuring true community-wide support.
Mayor William D. McLeod added, “The
Village is very excited about the opportunities to increase exposure to the Sears Centre
Arena through expanded local, regional and
national awareness. Not only will the new
D-League team shine a light on this great
community, but Bulls activities here could
give a consistent boost to tourism.” An increase in tourism generally increases sales and
hotel taxes generated by visitors to Hoffman
Estates, providing more funding for Village
services and infrastructure.
With the Bulls D-League team at its new
home in the Sears Centre Arena, the Village
anticipates an exciting year ahead. In preparation for the inaugural season, the team is
planning a variety of activities to engage with
and get to know Hoffman Estates. Be on the
lookout for a team name voting poll, a variety
of appearances by the Chicago Bulls organization and other fun events leading up to the
start of the 2016-2017 season.

lights, ornaments, garland and artificial
decorations must be removed from the
tree, plastic disposal bags are prohibited,
and one disposal sticker must be visibly
wrapped around the tree trunk or branch.
