Tim Green
Dave Perry
Tim Green
As a keen and passionate hobbyist
many years ago, I can remember
my excitement when I added to
my collection of Fire-bellied toads,
Leopard geckos and mantids and
became the proud owner of a group
of six baby Bearded dragons. In those
days, husbandry techniques, specialist
equipment and information were all
harder to come by, but these pioneer
dragons flourished, grew rapidly and
became real characters prompting me
to appreciate how these wonderful
animals really tick all the boxes in terms
of being an ideal reptile pet. Twentyfive years and a lot of reptiles and
crickets later, I realise how lucky I was
to be in the right place at the right time
to witness the rapid evolution of what
is now a mainstream part of the UK pet
trade and to be able to play a small
part in its ascendency.
■■
Dave Perry
It seems an age ago when Tim and I
were doing everything at Peregrine.
We bred the insects, answered the
phones, packed the orders and looked
after the animals. Although these
days we are more likely to be found in
meetings or sitting behind a desk, we
remain dedicated to the ideals that
prompted us to start our company
all those years ago, and have an
enthusiastic team determined to make
Peregrine Livefoods the premier supplier
of reptile products and services. Reptiles
and amphibians are now a major part
of pet keeping, with more and more
people joining the hobby each year.
That’s great for business but it also
means that more people can experience
the sense of wonder that you get when
you see a snake struggling out of its egg,
a frog leaving the water for the first time
or a mantis shedding its skin. I still get
a buzz from these things and in a time
when people seem to be losing contact
more and more with the natural world it’s
great to be part of an exciting, growing
area that can get people enthusiastic
about something. It also means that
when I get bored with paperwork I can
sneak up to the animal rooms to watch
those frogs, snakes and mantids for a
while, and there aren’t many people who
can say that about their job.
The reptile advantage
“With our long experience as hands-on enthusiasts, breeders
and wholesalers, we understand both the complex and varied
needs of the retailer and the aspirations of the hobbyist alike.“

Reptile industry has a retail value of over £200 million pa
More pet reptiles than dogs today
Estimated growth of 15-20% pa over the last 5 years
The reptile industry has exploded into
mainstream petkeeping, with increasing
numbers of newcomers taking home
their first Corn snake or Bearded dragon.
Whereas the rabbit or hamster used
to be a traditional first pet for children,
many now turn to reptiles.
Yet what unites the beginner and
seasoned specialist is their determination
to provide the best for their pet.
Popular species such as Leopard
geckos, Bearded dragons and Corn
snakes are the mainstay for many
retailers, with increasing numbers
stocking more unusual and rare species.
Testament to the reptiles’ popularity is
how large pet chains have embraced
the phenomenon, and are also stocking
livestock, products and livefood.
A major change in the industry
concerns livestock; successful breeding
programmes have meant that captivebred animals now dominate the market.
New and improved products are
constantly being launched, and this
investment in Research and Development
has enriched the husbandry techniques
of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates
immeasurably. With all these
developments, hobbyists are now better
equipped than ever to provide the
ultimate conditions of care for their pet.
As reptiles and amphibians suit
the modern lifestyle, being low
maintenance and providing a fantastic
alternative for children and adults
allergic to fur, there is every indication
that the industry will continue its
upward trend.
A one-stop shop
Peregrine Livefoods is the obvious
choice for all retailers, whether you
are entering the reptile market for the
first time, or have been selling reptiles
for 20 years. Our professionalism and
knowledge is unsurpassed, and we can
help you every step of the way.
We stock every conceivable product
that is needed to keep reptiles,
amphibians and inverts, backed up
by top-notch support services. Highly
driven and customer focussed, we’re
never happy unless you’re happy.
We have a strict policy of supplying only
to bona fide traders, and are more than
happy to tailor packages to suit individual
needs, taking into account available
space and budget requirements.
Even if you’ve never stocked reptiles,
and are understandably nervous about
taking the plunge, we can advise on
best starter species, set-ups
and products. Together, we can help
you increase your sales and margins.
Our people are our
BEST resource
“From the sales office to livefoods, from frozen to dry goods,
all our teams work together to provide a solution for our
customers. We want to provide the best service, best price

partner to assist you.“

96 team members, many of whom have been with us for years
All departments work together with a customer-centric focus
We recruit the best to provide the best
Peregrine Livefoods was initially
founded by Dave Perry and Tim Green
(Perry-Green… well, it seemed a good
idea then!) as a part-time venture to
breed and sell livestock – while both
were working as research scientists.
Dave and Tim are qualified to degree
level in biological subjects, and were
breeding and selling reptiles and
amphibians at specialist shows.
At which they were asked over and
over again what to feed the creatures,
and where to get the food.
By 1992, demand had grown so big that
Peregrine became a full-time business.
Today, Peregrine Livefoods is one
of the most respected specialist
wholesalers in the UK, supplying all the
equipment, frozen foods and livefoods
required for the correct care of reptiles,
amphibians and invertebrates, as well
as the animals themselves. Customers
include well-known specialist reptile
shops, general pet shops, retail chains,
wholesalers, zoos and rescue centres. We take our responsibility seriously,
and as such are members of several
professional bodies including
REPTA (Reptile and Exotic Pet Trade
Association) and the Pet Care Trust.
Our four roaming sales reps have retail,
wholesaler and breeder experience,
and so fully understand the challenges
retailers face, as well as what is
important, such as business strategies,
marketing techniques and growing
profits. Most important of all, we are
all reptile enthusiasts, and care deeply
and passionately about the animals we
provide for.
Supporting them is our dedicated sales
and customer service team members,
so there is always someone at the end
of a telephone to talk to. Whether it is
to place an order, enquire about our
latest products, ask for technical advice
or even a complaint. We don’t mind –
we love talking to our customers.
Yet no one sees what goes on behind
the scenes – the dedicated men and
women who breed and care for our
insects and livestock, our packing and
warehouse teams and those working
in the accounts and support teams.
Each and every team member is
an expert in their field, and we
invest heavily in their training and
development to ensure our service
is always world class. You can
expect no less.
What’s for dinner?
“We have been commercially breeding livefoods for
25 years, taking pride in the quality and continuity
of supply. To remain competitive, we have to supply
the best insects possible.“

55 million top-quality insects bred each month
Bespoke climate-controlled rearing complexes at multiple sites
Insects freshly tubbed on day of despatch; live arrival guaranteed
Barcoded tubs compatible with instore EPOS
Guaranteed next-day delivery
As more and more insectivorous
animals are kept, livefoods are a muststock for every retailer selling reptiles
and amphibians – they are literally a
consumable product. When you sell
livefoods, you have guaranteed regular
repeat sales and consumer footfall into
your shop.
Always looking to expand our offerings
and give you the best choices possible,
we were the first to breed CalciWorms
in the UK. These worms are naturally
high in calcium, and our decision to
include them was the direct result
of the need for a nutritious livefood
source that is naturally high in calcium.
For retailers who are new to reptile
and perhaps a bit squeamish about
handling jumping crickets and
wriggling worms, our pre-packs
mean it’s a hands-off job. It’s win-win
all round.
All our insects are bred at bespoke
complexes by experienced
breeders, so we never have to rely
on other breeders. The advantage of
this arrangement means we have total
control over quality and consistent
supply. Our fill rate runs at 99% or more.
Not sure which insects to carry instore?
We can advise on which types to
stock, and how much, based on our
extensive knowledge of the industry
and analysis of buying patterns of
more than 800 retailers.
We have an extensive range of species
(including crickets, locusts and meal
worms and many more), available in
different sizes to suit different mouth
sizes. We make it simple for you to sell
livefood by offering packaging options,
in both prepack and bulk sizes.
Not one to rest on our laurels, we
constantly review and develop our
breeding processes, always looking to
improve our range of insects, breeding
methods and packaging.
We also take our corporate
responsibilities seriously, and to lower
our environmental impact, we use heat
recovery systems to re-use heat that
would otherwise be lost. Our tubs are
also 100% recyclable.
Captive-bred
with integrity
“We concentrate on captive-bred stock, sourced sustainably from top breeders in the UK,
EU and USA, so we can supply our customers with high-quality specimens that have been
bred with their health and well-being as the primary aim. We constantly seek to enhance
our own captive breeding to further improve supply and quality.“

First-hand experience in the captive husbandry of over 200 species
Specialists in the breeding of over 50 species
Aim to stock 99% captive-bred stock
Updated livestock list distributed weekly via email and web
Core species in stock at all times
Guaranteed live arrival
We are different from many wholesalers
in that our livestock list comprises
mostly of captive-bred animals,
sourced both here in the UK and from
abroad. As well as having our own
comprehensive breeding programs,
we work closely with commercial and
private breeders to obtain as wide a
range of species as possible.
Are you new to the market? We are
more than happy to advise on species
selection, care advice, and provide
training on stocking and selling. We
have also worked with industry experts
to design bespoke livestock units
for use instore. You won’t have to go
anywhere else for information or help
with your reptile department.
We have a solid captive-bred policy, which
has two main advantages. First, we have
better quality animals as each is reared
under optimum conditions. Second, we
are not unnecessarily removing creatures
from the wild. All of which means we are
working with the industry to make reptilekeeping sustainable.
Any wild-caught species that we offer
will be hardy, easy-to-keep species with
a track record of establishing well in
captivity. They will also be of a quality
that is comparable to captive-bred
stock. We do not object to wild-caught
animals, but believe that it must be
carried out in a way that respects the
animal, the environment and the local
community. Collecting should also be
carried out in a sustainable manner.
We are proud of our experienced,
dedicated livestock team who are always
ready to provide advice on care and
health issues. And because we are all
reptile enthusiasts, we take the reptiles’
well-being personally. Which is why we
have regular veterinary inspections by
our retained vet, who is also on hand for
consultation at any time.
We stock a wide range of animals – not
just core species, but also the more
specialist. All of which enables us to
appeal to as wide a range of customers
as possible.
We also adhere to a strict policy of
responsible trading, so we won’t list
species which we consider unsuitable
for the average keeper, such as the
Green Iguana, African Rock Python,
Burmese Python, Green Anaconda or
large Monitors.
As an added service, we can source
many specialist species, but treat
each request individually and carefully
consider the experience of the keeper.
That’s why retailers
go to Peregrine
“We take as much care with our frozen food as we do
breeding our livefood. All our frozen food is commercially
bred for reptiles, then graded according to size, so you
are guaranteed nothing less but top-quality produce.“

Large range of mice, rats, chicks, etc.
Packed in poly boxes with dry ice
Guaranteed next-day service
Variety of retail packaging options
Retail barcoded packs compatible with instore EPOS
In the wild, predatory species such as
snakes and lizards will feed on small
mammals and other live prey. In captivity,
many are more than happy to feed on
dead prey, which is their staple diet.
Feeding an animal frozen, dead food
also makes their maintenance much
easier as owners can buy in bulk and
store in the freezer until needed.
Most reptiles will only eat whole foods
such as mice, rats and chicks so size
is important. Both mice and rats, for
instance, are sold in a variety of sizes,
from pinkies through to adult, to suit
the animal concerned. For example,
pinkies are mice of a few days old, and
ideal for many hatchling snakes.
We carry a large range of frozen food,
all of which are bred commercially at
approved facilities for reptile food.
All rodents are also graded into
specific sizes so as to suit differentsized mouths. Peregrine is licensed
by DEFRA as an approved supplier of
frozen reptile foods under the Animal
By-Products legislation.
Our range is extensive, comprising
hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, rabbits
and quail as well as mice, rats and chicks.
But that’s not all, as we also stock
a wide range of Gamma and ownbrand frozen aquatic foods. These
are wild collected but then treated
after packaging. Gamma foods are
guaranteed pathogen free, giving
total peace of mind to owners who are
worried about introducing disease but
want to use natural foods.
To make things as easy as possible for
retailer and end-user, we offer a range
of packaging solutions to suit different
markets and needs, including bulk
packaging and opaque packaging.
Discuss your needs with us, and we can
advise what will work best for you.

Although livestock is traditionally
seen as the draw product in reptiles,
dry goods are vital and form a major
source of margin. Everything from
vivariums and complete set-ups
to substrates, from heating and
lighting to tank décor. Not forgetting
supplements and even protective
clothing and handling tools.
At Peregrine Livefoods, we are so much
more than just foods and livestock – we
are UK distributors for Zoo Med, Lucky
Reptile and T-Rex and stock every major
brand including Exo Terra, Viv Exotic,
Habistat, Arcadia, Microclimate, Vetark
and Komodo. In short, we have every
conceivable product a hobbyist and an
experienced keeper could ever require.
We also have our own brand, ProRep,
which comprises a selection of the
essential everyday products that
reptile owners will need to keep their
reptiles healthy and happy in captivity.
It is a brand designed to complement
other product ranges.
With such an incredible, unparalleled

Wooden vivariums
Glass terrariums
Plastic tanks
An arboreal species like a Panther
chameleon or Crested gecko will require
a taller vivarium than a terrestrial species
such as a Leopard gecko, so selecting
the correct size vivarium requires an
understanding of the natural history of
the species. We can help you stock a
suitable range, as well as advising on
the different styles of vivariums, from the
more traditional wooden constructions
to the user-friendly plastic ranges and
modern glass terrariums.
Lighting

Fluorescent tubes and compacts
Spot bulbs and fittings
MV and metal halide
Halogens

There is a bewildering array of lighting
available, which is arguably one of the
most important aspects of reptile and
amphibian care. Most reptiles require
high quality and appropriate lighting to
address their metabolic and behavioural
needs – inadequate or inappropriate
lighting can lead to Metabolic Bone
Disease or lethargic behaviour.
It’s also not a case of one size fits
all, and sometimes a combination
of different lighting systems may be
required to meet the relevant needs of
a specific species. We can advise on all
systems, and offer tailored advice for
the species you stock.
Heating
■■
■■
■■
Heat mats
Ceramics
Infra red spots
Reptiles rely on their environment
for heat, and position themselves
accordingly to adjust and maintain
their internal body temperature. Which
is why in the wild, reptiles will bask
on rocks for warmth, or crawl under
overhanging rocks to cool. It is common
for owners to install heat mats, with
additional hot spots provided by the
use of infra red spots.
Foods/vitamins/supplements
■■
■■
■■

Formulated foods are available for
some of the common species and can
provide a complete diet. They are an
easy alternative for species that do not
require live, frozen or fresh food, and
have the benefits of being clean and
easy to use – they also help avoid the
emotive issue of feeding whole foods.
To help boost the health of reptiles
in captivity and address common
health issues, there is a large range of
vitamins, supplements, disinfectants
and treatment products. We can
suggest a suitable range to address
everyday needs.

This category includes all the add-on
sales that owners may need to provide

vivariums and terrariums, to humidity
controls and spraying systems which
increase humidity for relevant species.
Ventilation systems such as fans are useful
to cool a vivarium and increase airflow,
which is essential for some species.

Cage carpets
Substrates play an important role
for reptiles and amphibians as many
spend most of their time in contact
with them, and owners need to be
aware which substrate will suit their pet
best, and which are safe to use. Choice
of substrate is also influenced by the
creature’s natural habitat in the wild,
and using the correct substrate will help
to create the optimum conditions for a
happy, healthy animal.

This is all about making a vivarium or

on offer, including realistic-looking
artificial plastic and silk plants, natural
and artificial vines, bogwood, naturallooking caves and hides, a large variety
of backgrounds – including some
astounding 3D versions. Not forgetting
an impressive list of live plants; though
we do have a list of reptiles that would
make short work of any fresh foliage!

Protective clothing
This category contains a wide range
of everyday products from cage locks

enthusiast, such as those who want to
breed their reptiles we have a choice
of incubators and for those that keep
species that are difficult to handle,
there are many specialist handling tools
available and protective clothing such
as gloves.

Weekly notification of promotions, special offers and new products
2008 marked a milestone for us as
we underwent massive change and
investment. Not only did we move to
new purpose-built premises, we also
put in a bespoke order processing,
accounting and stock control software.
As a direct result, we increased our
efficiency and output, and are now able
to better serve our customers.
The new system meant improved
order accuracy, as a result of the
implementation of a new picking
system that confirms product
identity. Using barcode scanning
technology, this has improved stock
accuracy, enabling us to maintain
daily stock updates.
Our sales team work with bespoke
state-of-the-art order processing
software, and can send email
acknowledgements of all orders
placed. To enhance our customer
service, we also send out email
notifications of current promotions.
Should we be unable to supply a
product, we will usually be able to
recommend a suitable alternative.
We are currently developing our
website with the aim of seamless
web integration.
Having said this, person-to-person
contact is important to us, which is
why whenever you call, you will always
be able to speak to one of our team
members, all of whom have technical
knowledge and can give advice on
any of our products – or get the right
person to talk to you. All part and
parcel of the complete support we
offer, both pre- and post-sales.
What if things go wrong? There are
inevitably times when all doesn’t go
to plan. If this should happen, rest
assured that we will do everything
we can to put things right. Using our
fully integrated query system, we
will track any complaint through to a
speedy resolution, whether this means
replacing damaged or incorrect items,
or issuing a credit.
We constantly monitor order fill rates,
error and product failure rates, and
strive for improvements in every area of
our operation.
Making it happen
“From the moment we receive your order to the time it lands on

Training and support
We take great pride in going the
extra mile, in demonstrating that we
are more than just a wholesaler and
breeder of livestock and livefood. It is
because we care passionately about
what we do that we have invested
heavily in training and support services,
not just for our own staff, but for you,
the retailer.
We have developed a series of training
days specifically for retailers, a response
to more and more customers asking
for training. The training days provide
practical advice and help with product
selection and use, demonstrate how to
successfully retail reptiles, explain the
principles of reptile keeping, and the
husbandry of core pet species, all of
which help raise industry standards.
Alongside this we hold Product
Days, in which we provide training
on specific ranges and product
groups, which enables retailers to
better understand the market and its
products, and in turn provide a better
service to their customers.
We host regular focus groups and
workshops, in which retailers gain a
better understanding of the needs of
the consumer and how they can best
be supplied. Through such events we
are also able to monitor changes and
developments in the market.
Practical solutions
Our support services go far beyond
what many other wholesalers provide,
and we have business partners who
can help you with EPOS and
shopfitting solutions.
Our EPOS partner can help you
make the most of your business,
using software that can improve stock
control, efficiency and margins while
reducing costs.
Effective shopfitting is a crucial
element for any successful retail unit,
and our partners have a wealth of
experience, strategies and tactics to
enable you to make the most out of
any available space.
We have a range of specially built
livestock units for retailers who are
venturing into reptiles for the first
time, and our shopfitting partners can
help you whether you want a simple
livestock unit, shelving, aquatic refit or
even total shop refit. We can also offer
bespoke designed vivariums and shop
units to suit your individual needs.
Going the extra mile
Again, it’s our people who go the extra
mile to provide you with a compelling
reason to keep coming back.
Our sales team is fully conversant
with all sales models, whether you are
in retail, Internet sales or wholesale
distribution, and can provide an
effective and efficient sales blueprint
tailored to your requirements and
circumstances. Apart from advising
on shop and shelf layout, we can also
advise on best-selling products from a
wide range of brands.
This can only be achieved by face-toface contact, which is why our Field
Sales Team makes it a point to visit
you in your store, to discuss business
opportunities and plan a route forward.
Sometimes it’s the little things that make a
difference, like the mini chocolate on your
hotel pillow. With attention to such details,
we also supply care sheets free of charge,
that you can hand out to customers, which
contain relevant information and practical
advice on keeping their new pet. These
are very popular among our customers
as it helps them adhere to the Animal
Welfare Act.
We also have a wide range of free
instore Point of Sale (POS) support, in
the form of posters, shelf talkers, shelf
edges, wobblers and so on. Our sales
team will be more than delighted to
identify which will work best for you.
Together we can make a difference.

“Over the past two years, we have
grown from a small shop to a
recognised brand; this couldn’t
have been done without Peregrine
Livefoods; the girls are always great
to deal with. Then there’s Jason, the
sales rep. Without him we wouldn’t
be where we are today. From his
friendly advice, product knowledge,
recommendations, to his keeping us
up to date on new products, deals
and constant back-up… Jason is
invaluable. We are where we are
because of the team at Peregrine
Livefoods.”
“I have been a reptile enthusiast since
the age of 15. Early last year, I dreamt
of quitting my Tree Surgery business
and opening my own reptile shop. In
October, I acquired my local reptile
shop. The Peregrine rep and I had
a chat, talked about good-selling
products, slow movers, and came up
with some good ranges. I was very
impressed with his knowledge; he is
a reptile breeder, not just a salesman.
Best of all, returns or damaged stock
are easily replaced or refunded.”

“Peregrine have helped us grow our
business from day one. They provide
superb customer service as well as
being flexible to our business needs.
Especially the sales team, who will
personally run down to put a lastminute product in with our order so
we don’t disappoint our customers.”
“As we stock a large variety of dry

suppliers can offer availability and

these levels as well as introduce new
products, often on a weekly basis.
Most importantly, Peregrine is reliable
and will go out of their way to sort
out any problems, if any arise.”

gives a review of products and their
uses, along with an overview of the

those who have been on our courses:
We hold training courses throughout
the year. Two basic courses
introduce the concept of keeping
reptiles, amphibians and inverts
and include topics such as lighting,
thermoregulation, heating, foods,
caging and substrates. They also
provide delegates with retailing
strategies, empowering retailers
with the confidence to start up in the

The third course introduces the basics

“I have used Peregrine Livefoods
since 2006, and they are my favourite
wholesaler! The telesales ladies are
lovely; the animal room staff know
their stuff; and my rep is always there
to help me improve sales with my
business. They are a great support.
Mandy, Little Beasties
“The service from Kenny is second
to none. When I first decided to get
reptiles in the shop, he came to the
shop. He helped me make sure I had
the correct set-up, and we discussed
in-depth the care and attention they
would need. My livestock order
came in on a Thursday, and he came
to check they had arrived safely
and in good condition. Anytime I
have a question, I can give him a
call, knowing that I am getting good,
honest advice.”
Lorraine, Wagtail Pet Supplies
“It was all done well, and the examples
of products shown and diagrams
drawn up were helpful. Handling the
reptiles was good also, as we got to
know what to expect when handling
them in store”
“All the training was informative and
well delivered. I feel much more
confident and look forward to selling”
“Very good introduction if you
are a beginner”
“Really good trainer; everyone really
enjoyed the day”
“Very thorough explanations
and practicals”
“It was very good, all-round training.
As someone who knew nothing about
reptiles, I have learned a lot”
“I learnt a lot in a short space of time”
“You were very good and made it fun.
Thank you”
