Searching
To conduct a search, enter a word or words in
the Find it fast! search box at the top of the
page. All licensed databases will be searched
simultaneously. Results are displayed in a tab
format:
•
Encyclopedia Articles
•
Websites (all prescreened and ageappropriate)
•
Media
•
News Feature Stories
•
Magazines
Note: Tabs will only appear if there are appropriate search results.
"More like this" and "Did you mean?" offer familiar search help.
To narrow the encyclopedia article search results even further, click Search within
Search located on the left hand side of the encyclopedia articles search results page.
To specify phrases and/or use Boolean operators, click Advanced Search.
From the Grolier Online Kids home page, you can access any section directly without
having to drill down to the individual databases. The top frame within each database
provides quick access to a global search and the home page.
•
Databases: All licensed Grolier Online databases are listed on the left-hand side
of the home page. You can click on the database to access it directly or perform a
global search using the Find it fast! box on the top of the home page.
•
Today Is…: Located near the top right-hand side of the home page, Today is…
connects students to a short, lively essay (sometimes in the form of a quiz) on a
featured subject associated with each day, as well as descriptive lists of other
events and birthdays related to that day. Additionally, students can search for
other dates that they are interested in.
•
NewsNow: Located on the right-hand side of the home page, NewsNow brings
students three weekly news stories written specifically for younger readers. Each
article includes vocabulary and article links as well as teacher resources—all
designed especially for younger students. Students simply click on the title of the
news story they wish to view.
•
Feature Showcase: Located near the bottom center of the home page, the
Feature Showcase connects students to multimedia-rich presentations tied to
school curriculum and important events.
•
For Educators: Located in the bottom right corner of the home page, teachers
can access various teacher resources, including lesson plans correlated to
standards, Teaching the News, and more.
•
Dictionary: Located below the Find it fast! box, the dictionary is easy for young
students to find and access. By clicking on the dictionary button, they will
automatically be directed to the The American Heritage® Children’s Dictionary.*
Because this dictionary is written at a younger level, students will be sure to get a
definition they can understand. Or, if they prefer, they can access any other
dictionary or thesaurus listed, simply by clicking on the button next to the title of
their choice.
•
Atlas: Also located below the Find it fast! box, the Atlas now contains several
new features that put the world at students’ fingertips, including a search by
country or city name, a distance calculator, and photos and points of interest—
accessible directly from the map.
To utilize the global distance calculator, all a student needs to do is click on
Global Distances at the top of the Atlas and select one city from each of the two
lists provided. The distance calculation will be displayed. A local distance
calculator is available from select country and state maps.
