The Milan Mirror-Exchange Tuesday, August 14 2012 Page 9 South Gibson County band explores “The Tech Effect” in new show By Crystal Burns Pop fans, get ready for a walk down memory lane as the South Gibson County band explores technology’s effect on pop music. “The Tech Effect” is an entertaining and educational show featuring music that appeals to all generations. It also includes narration read by the students while the music is being played that will explain the different points of interest in Music Technology history. “I think the audience will enjoy the wide range of music,” said Stephen Price, Band Director. “The Tech Effect” begins with a medley of “Birdland,” “Jump, Jive and Wail,” and “Let’s Dance.” Other songs include “Rock Around the Clock” and “Johnny B. Goode.” The band will play portions of “Hard To Say I’m Sorry,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Bad Medicine,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long” before ending the show with Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.” Students began looking at the music during the last couple weeks of school in the spring. Even the incoming freshmen got a head start. During the summer, the band had five rehearsals to get acquainted with each other and learn the fundamentals of marching.Ten days of Band Camp allowed students to dive head first into learning the music and drill for “The Tech Effect.” With such a fast-paced show, Price said matching choreogra- phy to the music has been difficult. The color guard is also tasked with finding flags and uniforms that replicate the mood and feel of the music. It’s just the band’s second year of marching and competing. Price said learning the routine of weekly performances during the 2011 football season and taking on a full schedule of competitions last year helped his students learn the importance of organization, promptness and responsibility plus the thrill of performing. “They also learned through experience that performing in front of hundreds of people can be exhilarating,” Price said. South Gibson County has 78 band members and 15 student leaders. “All of them have done a wonderful job already of showing great attitudes, encouragement, and a hard work ethic,” Price said. “My job would not be near as fun, nor as easy, without them.” SGC begins its competition season September 22 at Liberty High School where the band will compete in the morning and afternoon. They’ll travel to Gibson County High School Sept. 29 and will perform October 20 and 27, gearing up for the Division II State Competition in Thompson’s Station November 3. “I felt very good about last year’s competitive season,” Price said. “We were always competitive and even came home with SOUTH GIBSON COUNTY BAND MEMBERS are Melody Lemonds, Haley Boals, Sydni York, Tyler Giles, Destiny Carnal, Rachel Mason, Ashley Jackson, Holly Graves, Sere Jackson, Courtney Moritz, Katie Travis, Breauna Collier, Maggie Walgren, Samuel Johnson, Gideon Anderson, Danesha Johnson, Madeline Moore, Emily Davis, Christina Quenon, Ruby Maroney, Destiny Meyer, Hannah Houck, Matthew Paschall, Josh Young, Presley McCoy, Jason Kail, Briana Emerson, Tim Evans, Sarah Foust, Riley Hawk, Micah Whitnell, John Beal, Noah Houck, Megan Hurt, Haley Powell, Sydney Minton, Haley Hardwick, Hailey Hudgings, Adrian Zarate, Morgan Johnson, Jana Blackmon,Tyler Delaney, Brayden Hendrix, Chris Sowell, Reese Gardner, Emily Penney, Alyssa Lynn, Austin Rogier, Peyton Adams, Colby Gillman, Kimi Bruce, Danielle Price, Reagan Fesmire, Brooke Turner, Kaitlin Partin, Rachel Edwards, Ashley Njalle, Brooke Whitney, Jose Sanchez, Andrew Mayo, Gabby Hardison, Emily McGill, Keaton Wilson, Kiah Hurt, Kendall Cox, Carter Bumpus, Moriah Kerfoot, Jon-Daniel Boudreau, Mallory Heidelberg, Jacob Todd, Seth Gibson, Marissa Powell, Dalton Leslie, Erin Ison (assistant director) and Stephen Price (director), an overall first place in Division II from Huntingdon.
