Class of The 2013 Commencement Cleveland Heights High School State Theatre at Playhouse Square Center June 3, 2013 6:30 p.m. Class of The 2013 Class Motto "I’ve been going a long time now, along the way I’ve learned some things. You have to make the good times yourself, take the little times and make them into big times, and save the times that are all right for the ones that aren’t so good." Rod McKuen ~ Commencement Protocol ~ Commencement is a ceremony of dignity and sophistication. In keeping with the atmosphere of the occasion, members of the audience are requested to restrict their participation to polite but sincere applause. Distractions such as name calling, whistling and yelling detract from the formal nature of the program. Kindly refrain from any behavior which may embarrass the graduates or interfere with the rights of others to hear and enjoy the entire program. Full cooperation by the audience is greatly appreciated and our gratitude is extended in advance. About the program: Every effort is made to make the printed program accurate with respect to awards and graduates. Printing schedules, however, occasionally make this impossible. The student’s academic transcript is the official record. ~ Academic Regalia ~ The academic costume which makes the commencement procession so colorful is as old as the universities, which is to say more than 800 years old. It goes back to the days when students were “clerks,” that is, members of the minor clergy and wore monkish gowns and hoods. In those days of unheated classrooms and garret sleeping quarters, the gowns served a very practical purpose. The hood ends in a “tippet” which is a sort of hollow tail. When the hood was not pulled over the head, the tippet served as a convenient pocket. The hood is only an adornment today. The mortarboard came into use after the hoods had ceased to be worn on the head. It seems to have evolved from the square biretta of Renaissance churchmen. The tassel on the mortarboard may be either black or the “color of the faculty” (see below), or, for the holder of a doctor’s degree, it may be of gold thread. Many foreign universities have their own distinctive headgear instead of the mortarboard. Both the gown and the hood indicate the degree held by the wearer, or the one he/she is about to receive. The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves ending in another tippet, which dangles below the arm. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no trimming, but the doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve. This velvet may be either black or the color of the faculty. Graduates of some institutions, both American and foreign, may wear gowns of the color of the university which awarded their degrees, for instance, crimson for Harvard, blue for Yale, etc. In the United States, the hood is edged with velvet in the color of the faculty and lined with colors of the university conferring the degree. The color of the faculty referred to above indicates the field in which the degree was taken. Cleveland Heights High School faculty and administration have worn the cap and gown of their college at commencement since 1972.
