Untapped Source – Part 10 – Tongues – Part
3 (prayer language/personal not business)
Acts 2:4 (NLT)
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages,[a] as
the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Who is “everyone”?
o Everyone that had heard about the promise of the Holy Spirit
John 14:26 (NLT)
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he
will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
John 16:7 (NLT)
But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate[a] won’t come.
If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
John 14:16 (NLT)
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,[a] who will never leave
you.
John 15:26 (AMPC)
But when the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener,
Standby) comes, Whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes
(proceeds) from the Father, He [Himself] will testify regarding Me.
o
Everyone that BELIEVED, from what they had heard about the promise of the
Holy Spirit [they had faith that what Jesus promised would be true]
Hebrews 11:1 (AMPC)
Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for,
being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving
as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].
Romans 10:17 (AMPC)
So faith comes by hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the preaching [of the
message that came from the lips] of Christ (the Messiah Himself).
Galatians 3:2 (AMPC)
Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the [Holy] Spirit as the result of obeying
the Law and doing its works, or was it by hearing [the message of the Gospel] and believing
[it]? [Was it from observing a law of rituals or from a message of faith?]
o
o
o
Those that had a hunger, for what they believed from what they heard
Those that had expectation from their hunger which was created by their belief
(faith) from they had heard
Those that mixed desire with expectation from their hunger which came from the
faith which grew because of what they had heard Jesus say about the promise of the
Holy Spirit NOW were waiting with ANTICIPATION FOR THIS PROMISE (this
word also carries the idea of “announcements”)
 Anticipation is defined as excitement - waiting eagerly for something you
know is going to happen.
Where does the Holy Spirit dwell?
In every born again believer --- How? He (The Holy Spirit) is God and God is
“Omnipresent” – present in all places at all times
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT)
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was
given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,
2 Corinthians 6:16 (AMPC)
What agreement [can there be between] a temple of God and idols? For we are the temple
of the living God; even as God said, I will dwell in and with and among them and will walk
in and with and among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
1 Corinthians 12:1 (my paraphrase)
Now Concerning gifts that you can only move in IF you allow the Holy Spirit to breath in
you. So please don’t be uninformed about this precious gift.
What gift?
Mark 16:17 (NLT)
These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name,
and they will speak in new languages.
What is tongues?
Technical Definition - Strong's G1100 - glōssa


The language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other
nations
A language (specifically one naturally unacquired)
Simplified Definition
 A message from God in a language (dialect) unknown to the person through whom
the message comes
How does this happen?
Acts 2:4 (NLT) - And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other
languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
 [as the Spirit gave them utterance]
o This was similar to the Spirit speaking through the prophets in their own language
(Acts 3:21; Heb. 1:1-2), only here it was with different languages (Acts 2:4,6,11).
 Though speaking in tongues is done through immediate inspiration by new
recipients when one has thus received the gift, it then becomes a part of his
mental makeup so that he can, if he desires to do so, exercise it without
direct inspiration,
 Even in a backslidden condition (1Cor. 13:1-3).
 This is why the exercise of vocal gifts of prophecy, tongues, and
interpretation of tongues is commanded to be regulated and even judged as
to whether it be under direct inspiration or whether the person is exercising
a gift of himself (1Cor. 14:29-33).
 Acts 2:4 (Wuest) - And all were controlled by the Holy Spirit and began to be uttering
words in languages different from their own native language and different from those
spoken by the others, even as the Spirit kept giving them ability to speak forth, not in words
of everyday speech but in words belonging to dignified and elevated discourse.
 Acts 2:4 (Message) - and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the
Spirit prompted them.
Acts 2:7-8 (NLT) - They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they
exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our
own native languages!
Acts 2:12-13 (NLT) - They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this
mean?” they asked each other. But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying,
“They’re just drunk, that’s all!”

There was more than just the outsiders hearing the people speaking in
the native language
o There was JOY evident
Doesn’t the bible say that only 2 or 3 at the most?
1 Corinthians 14:27-28 (20-30) (AMP)
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be limited to two or at the most three, and each one
speaking in turn, and one must interpret [what is said]. 28 But if there is no one to interpret,
the one [who wishes to speak in a tongue] must keep silent in church; let him speak to
himself and to God.
Paul here is addressing Church Service issues that the Corinthian church was
experiencing
Here He is talking about when the Holy Spirit gives someone (anyone) the gift of
tongues FOR THE CHURCH
IF this happens then God, by His Spirit will give the gift (Charisma) of
interpretation.
Our prayer langue is totaling different then the gift of tongues for the church
o
It’s personal not just business!
3 MAIN POINTS THIS MORNING
Point 1 – Speaking in tongues is speaking to God, in/by the Spirit
1 Corinthians 14:2 (AMP)
For one who speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to people but to God; for no one
understands him or catches his meaning, but by the Spirit he speaks mysteries [secret
truths, hidden things].
He who speaks in tongue speaks to God, in the Spirit (or by the Spirit)
1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (AMP)
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind (“understanding” in other
translations) is unproductive [because it does not understand what my spirit is praying].
15 Then what am I to do? I will pray with the spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me]
and I will pray with the mind [using words I understand]; I will sing with the spirit [by the
Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will sing with the mind [using words I understand].
Point 2 – It is benefit – It helps to build ourselves up
Benefit - an advantage or profit gained from something:
Jude 20 (HCSB)
Exhortation and Benediction
20 But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the
Holy Spirit,
1 Corinthians 14:4 (HCSB)
The person who speaks in another language builds himself up, but he who prophesies
builds up the church.
Builds – Edifies / Strong's G3618 - oikodomeō
 To restore by building, to rebuild, repair
 To promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace, virtue, holiness,
blessedness
 To grow in wisdom and piety
o Piety - the quality of being religious or reverent: "acts of piety and charity"
o Synonyms: devoutness, devotion, piousness, religion, holiness, godliness,
saintliness, veneration, reverence, faith, religious duty, spirituality, religious
zeal, fervor, pietism, religiosity
Edify - Definition
1. Instruct or improve (someone) morally or intellectually.
a. Synonyms: educate, instruct, teach, school, tutor, train, guide, enlighten,
inform,

improve,
But– a conjunction – Greek word that appears 2,800 times in the KJV (most of the
time) it is translated as “AND” or “moreover”
o GRAMMAR
 BUT/AND/IF - a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to
coordinate words in the same clause
 Some newer versions actually read it as “ON THE OTHER HAND”
 There is a difference between a tongue and prophecy but BOTH BUILD UP
o One builds up the individuals
o One builds up the church
Praying in our spirit language pours more of God’s grace into us and increases our faith,
o Which enables us to personally manifest more of the life of Christ and
minister more of the power of God to others.
Praying in the Spirit is also a weapon against the enemy,
it is a part of your armor!
Ephesians 6:17-18 (HCSB)
17 Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word.
at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert in this
with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.
 Period after verse 17 should actually be a “semi-colon” or
18 Pray
“colon”
o Ephesians 6:17-18 (CJB) - 17 And take the helmet of deliverance; along with
the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of God; 18 as you pray at all
times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and
persistently, for all God's people.

We like to think of the semicolon as providing a greater degree
of intimacy and clarity, in the right circumstances, than would two
distinct sentences. Consider this example: Susan loves pasta primavera; John does
not. It is clear that John does not love pasta primavera. If the example is broken into
two sentences, the expression becomes somewhat ambiguous: John does not—what?
Point 3 – It’s a choice
1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (HCSB)
For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with my understanding. I will
sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with my understanding.
 If – meaning “should I choose”
 I will – meaning “I choose”
1 Corinthians 14:18-19 (AMP)
I thank God that I speak in [unknown] tongues more than all of you; 19 nevertheless, in
public worship I would rather say five understandable words in order to instruct others,
than ten thousand words in a tongue [which others cannot understand].

Why is this important?

Because there are some weird people that act like they have no
choice to pray in the Spirit or not
The gift of the Holy Spirit is the divine ability given to a Christian to pray in the
tongues of their spirit language anytime there is a need or they so desire.
o That spirit language becomes a part of the new Spirit-born person’s nature,
character, and capability, enabling him/her to pray in tongues anytime
he/she wills to do so. A believer can pray in tongues as he/she wills, the same
as a natural-born person can willfully speak in his/her learned language.
 (from book “70 reasons to pray in tongues)
