My name is Katie Nork and I am a senior at East Stroudsburg

My name is Katie Nork and I am a senior at East Stroudsburg University, majoring in Communication
Studies with a concentration in Public Relations and minors in Mathematics and Interdisciplinary
German Studies. I am writing to you today to share more about myself and my involvement at ESU, in
support of my application and desire to run for Homecoming Queen 2015.
“Home” for me goes by the name of Mountain Top, a small family-oriented town located near
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. I’m an only child, raised by two hard-working parents who have always
taught me that with hard work and determination, I can achieve whatever I set my mind to. That dream
started at ESU. In fall of 2011, I attended an open house at ESU after many college visits, and I
immediately felt a sense of belonging that I did not experience on any other campus. The scenic location
of the Poconos, the small unified campus, and the welcoming students and staff members that I met
during my visit all made me confident in my decision to further my education at ESU.
As an ESU student, I take great pride in our campus and take responsibility as a student worker and
member of several different organizations to represent our University in the best way possible. I thrive
in helping other students and our campus community grow as a whole. My first two years at ESU, I
worked in the Office of Institutional Research & Assessment where I had the opportunity to help better
our campus by working closely with variety of student assessments. I am now a student worker in the
Career Development Center where I am really able to demonstrate my passion for helping others by
guiding students to grow as professionals and prepare for life after graduation. I create and distribute
our weekly newsletters, assist with programs and events, counsel through one-on-one appointments,
and everything in between. I truly believe in our mission of promoting success in career development
among our students and how they can apply their experiences at ESU toward a successful career.
Along with my involvement as a student worker, I also represent ESU through several co-curricular
organizations. I am currently the Chapter President of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority on campus and have
held several other leadership roles throughout my membership. I have also been involved in several
other organizations throughout my ESU career including Order of Omega Greek Honorary, Euclid’s
Elements Math Club, Economics Club, and Hemlock Suites Community Board. Through these
experiences, I have had the opportunity to meet many students and leaders on campus, which has
created a second family for me at ESU.
The charity I have selected is Project Turkey, which is a fundraising initiative of all Greek organizations on
campus to raise $7500 for the Salvation Army to provide Thanksgiving dinner to over 600 families of
Monroe County in need this holiday season. As a member of Tri Sigma, I strongly value the mission of
Greek life and our philanthropic efforts to give back to our community, which is why I’ve decided to
support this incredible project for my campaign. Beside Project Turkey, I perform over 40 community
service hours each semester with my sorority for a variety of nonprofits organizations – including
AWSOM, the SPCA of Luzerne County, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, and many more.
We are always seeking new opportunities to give back to our community, which is how Project Turkey
began.
I think I would be a great candidate for Homecoming Queen because I believe in this institution and its
mission to provide leadership and service opportunities to all students, and help them apply these
experiences to their desired career path. In these past three years, I have worked hard to be a positive
representation of ESU and I will continue to give back to the campus and community as an ESU alumnae,
because I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the experiences I’ve gained on this campus. ESU
has given me a world of opportunity that I will be forever grateful for, and my goal is to help all students
take that same pride in this University.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration in pursing my application.
Sincerely,
Katie Nork
