Maximum credit is shown for each item. It is necessary to match the credit to actual requirements, eliminating duplication and addressing instances where the credit is insufficient to meet the total requirement. For example: Is there a way to compensate for the credit short-fall or does the experience fail to meet the requirement? See the individual requirement pages for guidance and choose where the credits can most effectively be applied. ***Important: This evaluation should culminate in a SOCAD Student Agreement.*** MILITARY-RELATED LEARNING EXPERIENCE A B Basic Training, AR-2201-0399, 3/00-Present Basic Training, AR-2201-0399, 7/85-2/00 AIT, AR-1715-0928, 10/04-Present AIT, AR-1715-0928, 10/02-9/04 AIT, AR-1715-0928, 10/95-9/02 AIT, AR-1715-0928, 10/92-9/95 Warrior Leader, AR-2201-0603, 10/05-12/09 PLDC, AR-2201-0253, 10/93-9/05 PLDC, AR-2201-0253, 3/89-9/93 PLDC, AR-2201-0253, 4/84-2/89 BNCOC Common Core, AR-1406-009, 9/05-Present BNCOC Common Core, AR-1406-0090, 10/01-9/04 BNCOC Common Core, AR-1406-0090, 4/94–9/01 BNCOC Common Core, AR-1406-0090, 3/86–3/94 BNCOC AR-1715-0917, 10/03-Present BNCOC AR-1715-0917, 10/94-9/03 BNCOC AR-1715-0917, 10/92-9/94 ANCOC Core Curriculum, AR-1404-0035, 10/01-9/05 ANCOC Core Curriculum, AR-1404-0035, 10/00–9/01 ANCOC Core Curriculum, AR-1404-0035, 4/94–9/00 ANCOC Core Curriculum, AR-1404-0035, 2/89–3/94 ANCOC, AR-1715-0920, 10/02-Present ANCOC, AR-1715-0920, 10/94-9/02 ANCOC, AR-1715-0920, 10/93-9/94 SMC, AR 1408-0148, 9/95-9/06 SMC, AR 1408-0148, 1/91-8/95 SMC, AR 1408-0148, 1/90-12/90 SMC Nonresident, AR-1408-0149, 12/94-10/08 SMC Nonresident, AR-1408-0149, 7/90-11/94 SMC Nonresident, AR-1408-0149, 1/90-6/90 Master Fitness Trainer, AR-0803-0012, 1/90-10/05 (ASI-P5) Battle Staff Operations, AR-2201-0579, 10/03-Present (ASI2S) Battle Staff Operations, AR-2201-0412, 1/91-9/03 (ASI-2S) Battlefield Spectrum Management, AR-1115-0013, 1/90-5/91 5 4 9 9 5 4 3 4 3 3 3 3 2 2 9 8 12 4 4 2 2 10 8 6 22 18 18 11 12 10 4 3 4 4 9 9 5 4 3 4 3 3 3 2 2 2 9 8 8 4 2 1 1 10 6 6 16 13 14 6 10 10 4 3 OPTIONAL NOTES ON USE OF CREDIT Requirement F Requirement F Requirements E, G Requirements E, G Requirements E, G Requirement G Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement G Requirement G Requirement G Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement H Requirement G Requirements E, G Requirements E, G Requirements A, F Requirements A, F Requirements A, F Requirements A, C Requirements A, C Requirements A, C Requirement F Requirement E 3 3 3 3 Requirements E, F Requirement G Continued MOS 25U (31U) CTC - AAS-Applied Tech-Signal Support Systems – 8-29-06 Updated September 2012 15 MOS 25U10, 4/04-Present 25U20, 4/04-Present 25U30, 4/04-Present 25U40, 4/04-Present 25U50, 4/04-Present 31U10, 3/95-9/05 31U20, 3/95-9/05 31U30, 3/95-9/05 31U40, 3/95-9/05 31U50, 3/95-9/05 31U10, 2/93-2/95 31U20, 2/93-2/95 31U30, 2/93-2/95 31U40, 2/93-2/95 31U50, 2/93-2/95 15 18 19 12 15 16 6 16 18 19 6 13 15 16 Pending Evaluation Pending Evaluation Pending Evaluation Pending Evaluation Pending Evaluation Individualized assessment Individualized assessment Requirements G, H Requirements G, H Requirements G, H Individualized assessment Requirements G Requirements G, H Requirements G, H Requirements G, H Column A = Maximum credits recommended. Column B = Maximum credits that can actually be used in this degree. Optional—Note the requirement letter code and semester hours drawn from each experience as it is applied to a specific requirement on the following pages. The total for each experience cannot exceed the credit shown in Semester Hours column B. Steps for Applying Military-Related Learning Experiences 1. In the first column of the preceding table, check each learning experience that can be validated for the soldier. Choose only the highest level MOS attained. If there are relevant experiences not listed above, bring them to the attention of the college evaluator. 2. Review the individual letter-coded requirements pages and devise a preliminary strategy for applying the credits. A. Work from the most specific to the more general requirements (i.e., first, specific requirements; next, specific categories of electives; last, free electives). B. Work from completely satisfied requirements to partially-met requirements (i.e., unless there is a satisfactory way to make up for the shortfall in credit, the requirement might not be met by the particular experience. See college policy on the letter-coded requirement page.). C. Check for possible duplication by considering whether two or more credit recommendations are based on the same learning experience (e.g., was a skill credited for the MOS also granted for AIT in an instance where that MOS skill was fully learned in AIT? It is possible for a skill to be properly credited from two sources if the learning acquired in each setting is sufficiently different, but caution is needed to avoid duplication.). 3. Track the credits consumed in the table above, noting the requirement letter code and the semester hours applied. MOS 25U (31U) CTC - AAS-Applied Tech-Signal Support Systems – 8-29-06 Updated September 2012 17 APPENDIX III HOW TO USE REQUIREMENT PAGES 1. REQUIREMENT A college course (or the broader category shown in lieu of a course) required for the degree. 2. SH (SEMESTER HOURS) Semester (or quarter - QH) hours of unduplicated credit needed to meet the requirement. Unduplicated means that the same learning experience cannot already have been used to satisfy another requirement, and that if you combine smaller amounts of recommended credit to meet the total, they must represent unique learning experiences. 3. SOCAD The letter-number combinations shown represent categories of comparable courses in the SOCAD system that are guaranteed to transfer. Use the SOC Degree Network System Handbooks to find specific college courses in the categories (SOC-2 Handbook for associate degrees; SOC-4 Handbook for bachelor’s degrees). The categories are found in Chapter 8 of the handbooks. Your objective is to identify a college offering a course at a location where you can attend since they are generally not distance learning courses. Once found, determine if it is currently offered and enroll using the procedures of your Army Education Center. SOC Degree Network System Handbooks are available at www.soc.aascu.org/. 4. ARMY MOS If the requirement lists credit for your MOS, work with the college evaluator preparing your SOCAD Student Agreement to establish that it fully meets the requirement (i.e., it is worth the required number of SH) or that it can be combined with other credit sources. Avoid duplication of credit. ACE Guide Online is available at www.militaryguides.acenet.edu/ if you want to examine recommendations in detail. 5. ARMY SCHOOL If the requirement lists credit for a military school you have attended, work with the college evaluator preparing your SOCAD Student Agreement to establish that it fully meets the requirement (i.e., it is worth the required number of SH) or that it can be combined with other credit sources. Avoid duplication of credit. ACE Guide Online is available at www.militaryguides.acenet.edu/ if you want to examine recommendations in detail. 6. CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE If the requirement lists credit for a certification or licensure you hold, work with the college evaluator preparing your SOCAD Student Agreement to establish that it fully meets the requirement (i.e., it is worth the required number of SH) or that it can be combined with other credit sources. Avoid duplication of credit. Additional information is available online at https://www.cool.army.mil, www.acenet.edu/calec/corporate, and www.dantes.doded.mil. 7. TESTS If the requirement lists acceptable tests and you would like to take them, consult your local Army Education Center or additional information is available at www.dantes.doded.mil. 8. DISTANCE LEARNING If the requirement shows that distance learning courses are available, contact the college regarding its courses or examine DANTES Independent Study Catalog listings at www.dantes.doded.mil. MOS 25U (31U) CTC - AAS-Applied Tech-Signal Support Systems – 8-29-06 Updated September 2012 18 APPENDIX IV SELECTING THE RIGHT DEGREE 1. SELECTING THE RIGHT SOCAD ARMY CAREER DEGREE PLAN There are three kinds of degree plans: (1) SOCAD Army Career Degree: Typical civilian degrees that match the specialty skills of an MOS, (2) SOCAD Army Degree – General: Typical civilian degrees with more general content, and (3) SOCAD Army Degree – Specialized: Degrees especially crafted to accommodate the uniquely military or otherwise not-easily-matched-to-civilian-courses skills of an MOS. SOCAD ARMY CAREER DEGREE The SOCAD Army Career Degree is based on college degrees that uniquely relate to an MOS's skills and contain specific college courses that match its competencies. (Example: A computer studies degree in which recommended credit for military learning is assigned to college courses typically found in a computer studies major.) SOCAD ARMY CAREER DEGREE – GENERAL ARMY –CAREER – GENERAL The SOCAD ArmySOCAD Career Degree General isDEGREE based on college degrees that match the recommended credit from Army learning experiences to their requirements in more general ways. Military credit recommendations are assigned to one or more general categories (e.g., a "Skill Area", "Career Component", "Professional Focus", "Emphasis", "Aviation Maintenance" or another broad subject area) instead of to specific college courses uniquely identified with the MOS's special competencies. Possibly useful to soldiers, but less effective in mapping MOS competencies to civilian college courses normally associated with their specialties. The degree may have a General Studies, Management, or other broad title, possibly useful to soldiers, but not uniquely related to the MOS's special competencies (Example: A computer specialist matched to a degree in Management or General Studies rather than computer studies). SOCAD ARMY CAREER DEGREE – GENERAL SOCAD ARMY CAREER DEGREE – SPECIALIZED The SOCAD Army Career Degree – Specialized has many of the same qualities as the General degree except its title and major courses may be predominantly military in nature or are otherwise different than a typical civilian course for the same skill. The degree title and major courses would not typically be found in civilian higher education. As with the General Purpose degree plan, the Specialized one may be useful to soldiers but would be less effective in mapping MOS competencies to civilian college courses normally associated with their specialty. (Example: A college degree named for a military specialty and containing courses that are unique to it.) continued MOS 25U (31U) CTC - AAS-Applied Tech-Signal Support Systems – 8-29-06 Updated September 2012 19 continued 2. BROADER GENERAL DEGREE CHOICES A number of colleges offer flexible degrees that combine military credit and general education to form flexible, efficient-for-soldiers degrees. If it is not important that the soldier’s degree closely resemble a civilian one in the occupational specialty (i.e., be comprised of major-area courses normally associated with the field), such a program might be appropriate. Many General Studies network curriculums found in the SOC Degree Network System-2 fit this model. Examples of Internet accessible distance learning programs of this kind can be found at: www.excelsior.edu, www.tesc.edu, www.umuc.edu, www.ctcd.edu, and others (refer to the SOC Degree Network System-2 Handbook, www.soc.aascu.org, Locations by Network). 3. WILL YOU CONTINUE FOR A BACHELOR'S DEGREE? Some MOSs have bachelor's degree plans you can pursue directly without an interim associate degree. With this approach you have no transfer concerns, but if you stop short of completion you have no interim degree. An associate degree's title (e.g., AA, AS, AAS, etc.) alone will not ensure successful transfer to a bachelor's degree program. It depends more on the correct matching of the 2- and 4-year programs' course content. Read the Degree Objective statement on the degree plan carefully. If questions remain, raise them with the bachelor's degree program to which you intend to transfer. It is important to select the right courses based on considerations like: Are they intended to transfer? Do they have a place in your bachelor's degree curriculum? Must they be taken in the upper division (junior or senior year) of a bachelor's degree institution? MOS 25U (31U) CTC - AAS-Applied Tech-Signal Support Systems – 8-29-06 Updated September 2012 20
