FAT
THE SCIENCE OF SUGAR AND FAT
This is a free BUT ticketed event aimed at school aged
children and also the general public focussing on the
science behind sugar metabolism and its impact on our
health. There has been intense public debate about the
damaging impact of excess sugar consumption and its links
to conditions such as obesity. These effects seem to impact
most on our children and despite best current efforts the
problem seems to be getting worse. However, recent
years have seen a great increase in our understanding
of the science of sugar metabolism and the processes
contributing to obesity. At this event two of New Zealand’s
most experienced metabolic disease researchers will provide a general overview of what we know now and discuss what
we might be able to do with this knowledge. Prof. Peter Shepherd from the University of Auckland will discuss the science of
sugar and Prof. Dave Grattan from the University of Otago will cover the science behind obesity. They are both members of
the Maurice Wilkins Centre, a national grouping of researchers with a focus on metabolic diseases. They will also update the
audience on the centre’s New Zealand focussed research plans, amongst these a school based study to look directly at the
effect of sugar on school children. There is a local angle to this as some Nelson schools have indicated an interest to be part
of the pilot project for this ground breaking study.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Megan Younger for winning
the National Big Sing Choral Composition
Competition. For this she had to compose a
piece of music for a choir to sing on a theme
of her choice. Her composition ‘Dover Beach’
depicts detailed imagery of the beach at night
and the adjudicator, Leonie Holmes (Senior
lecturer in Composition and Music studies,
Auckland University), described her work as
an “attractive and evocative piece” of “very
sophisticated writing”. Gemma Christall also
gained a Highly Commended in the same
Competition.
Also Congratulations to Ngaire Wotherspoon
for being selected as First Horn in the New
Zealand Secondary school’s Brass Band.

WELCOME
This term is already proving to be very busy with subject selection and Year 13 students preparing for tertiary study.
SUBJECT SELECTION 2017
Students were issued with Curriculum Handbooks in Week 2 of Term 3. Students in Years 9-12 will also attend information sessions
with the HOD of Careers explaining the subject selection process. Students will have the opportunity to make appointments to
see the HOD of Careers if they need help choosing their subjects. Subject choices need to be inputted into the portal by Friday
16 September. Students will not be given Subject Selection forms this year. Instead, they will input their subjects into the portal
and a printout of these subjects will be sent to parents and caregivers to sign. These printouts must be returned to tutor teachers.
Parents/caregivers are invited to attend the Course Selection Evening on Tuesday 16 August between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. This
event will be held in the Hall.
SENIORS – SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AND LIMITED ENTRY COURSES
Seniors are advised that they must check closing dates for limited entry courses and scholarship applications, for both university
and polytechnic courses of study. Students can access the givME database on the internet at school for further scholarship
information. Many scholarships require a school reference. If your daughter requires a school reference she needs to contact the
Careers Administrator.
HALLS OF RESIDENCE APPLICATION PROCESS
Halls of Residence online applications opened on Monday 1 August. As part of the application process students are asked to
request a Common Confidential Reference. These will be completed and then be forwarded to the University or Polytechnic. If you
have any questions about the process please do not hesitate to contact the HOD of Careers or the Careers Administrator.
STUDYLINK
Students thinking about further study after they leave school have a lot of decisions to make. StudyLink’s website is a great place
to visit to get students thinking about what it will cost to live and study. StudyLink can help students work out if study is right for
them and how they will support themselves. Once they have made the decision to study it’s a good idea to sign up to receive
emails from StudyLink. This way students won’t miss out on important information, like when to apply and documents they will
need to send. We encourage students and parents to check out www.studylink.govt.nz.

SALES FOR SCHOOLS - USING REAL ESTATE TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY
WHAT WE DO
Sales For Schools is a nationwide program developed to raise funds for local schools through
donations from local real estate agents.
FOR SCHOOLS
Schools don’t have to do anything. When one of our Authorised Agents completes a sale for a school
family or a referral, the agent donates $1000 of their commission to that school. Pretty cool huh?
FOR SELLERS
If you’re selling, you want to know you’re getting the best agent to get you the best price for your
property. Our Authorised Agents have been personally selected based on their proven track records in sales, negotiating,
advice and service. Their success means your success and success for your local school.
FOR AGENTS
A Sales For Schools Authorised Agent knows that schools are the hub of any community. Authorised Agents have exclusive
rights to the Sales For Schools marketing program which allows them to attract more of the community to their business,
through both modern and traditional marketing methods.
