Relating Fractions
and Decimals
A fraction is a number used to represent part of a
whole or part of a set. In the set below, there are five
items. Two are circles and three are triangles. Each
item is
 15  of

the whole set. The circles represent
 52  of

the whole set. The triangles represent  35  of the whole

set.
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, in 2006 the fraction
of the population of Texas
that was under the age of 18
was about  7   .

A decimal is another way to write a fraction. Divide
the numerator of a fraction by its denominator to find
the equivalent decimal.
On a bookshelf,  34  of the books are mysteries.

What decimal represents the fraction of the books
that are mysteries?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. Keep
dividing until the remainder is 0 or a repeating
pattern is shown.
