Owning birds
Council regulates the keeping of birds in the Rockhampton Region including how many,
what type, how and where birds can be kept.
Approval to keep birds
Standards for keeping birds
If your allotment is less than 20,000m2, an approval is
required to:
ƒƒ keep between six and 20 of any species (other
than nuisance birds or racing pigeons)
ƒƒ keep one or more nuisance birds including rooster,
goose, cockatoo, galah or peacock.
The keeper must ensure:
ƒƒ the birds are kept contained within an enclosed
cage or aviary
ƒƒ that waste water from enclosures are drained and
that run-off is kept off the adjoining properties
ƒƒ the cage or aviary is thoroughly cleaned at least
once a week
ƒƒ that all reasonable steps are taken to prevent the
bird from being a noise nuisance that is offensive
ƒƒ that any enclosure in which the bird is kept is
properly maintained
ƒƒ pigeons are kept at the rear of, or behind any
residence on the allotment
ƒƒ bird food is kept in sealed containers
ƒƒ poultry pens are not situated within a 10m radius
of: another residence; food preparation area; or
food storage area.
It is illegal to keep more than 20 birds.
Requirements for racing pigeons
If your allotment is 800m2 or more, an approval is
required to keep racing pigeons.
It is illegal to keep racing pigeons on an allotment with
an area less than 800m2.
