PKMS Families,
Our PKMS families continue to make a strong push on our 5 Essentials survey. We are close to our totals last year
as we have had 29% of our families complete the survey. Currently, we have had 170 families complete the
survey. Our goal this year is to surpass a 40% completion rate. In order to accomplish this goal, we need 147
more families to complete the survey. The survey will only take a few minutes of your time. We look forwarding
to seeing the results as our School Improvement Team uses the results annually to help guide us in our planning.
Thanks again for all of your support!

4th grade Band Recruitment!!
Greetings from the District 301 Band Program! We are very excited to begin the registration process for another great
year of music-making in our 5th Grade Beginning Band program! This letter serves as an introduction to this exciting and
truly unique experience.
The beginning band program provides students a one-of-a-kind experience to learn how to play an instrument. Our
program provides instruction on:
 Specific instrument sound production and techniques
 Music reading skills including reading note names, rhythms, and vocabulary
 Irreplaceable Full-Band musical performance concepts
 Concert performance preparation and etiquette
During the last two weeks of April, students will be learning about the band instruments and testing out their top two
choices during their music classes. Students who are interested in joining band in 5th grade will then talk with their
parents about attending registration night.
Our registration times are: Friday, May 1st at CMS from 4-7pm and Saturday, May 2nd at PKMS from 9am-noon.
Interested families need only attend one event. The entire process should take approximately 30 minutes.
For more information on the band program and sign up procedure, please click on our Google Presentation
(http://goo.gl/WgfRcs), and read the attached PDF. Students will be receiving information to take home during the week
of April 21st. If you have any questions on the attached material, please feel free to email:
Allissa Carter ([email protected]) – Prairie Knolls, Country Trails, Prairie View or
Dennis Beiermann ([email protected]) – CMS, Lily Lake, HBT
We look forward to meeting your children in upcoming weeks, and you at registration night!
Sincerely,
Allissa Carter and Dennis Beiermann

March - Transportation Newsletter
Attention All Incoming Kindergarteners!
Kindergarten Registration is coming up the first week in March! Check with your school of attendance for the details on their webpage.
A Kindergarten Transportation Packet will be available containing pertinent busing information. Also, mark your calendars for Thursday,
July 23rd. You and your child are invited to come meet “Toby the Tire”. “Toby” is a learning tool provided by the State of Illinois to help
instruct bus safety information to the public. After the presentation, we will offer a short ride in a school bus. The presentation will be
held at Prairie View Elementary School located at 10N630 Nesler Rd., Elgin, IL 60124 at 4:30 p.m. Due to limited seating/capacity, we
are requesting the only one parent and their kindergartner attend this function. If you have any other questions or concerns, contact us
at (847) 464-6052. On behalf of the District 301 Transportation Department, we look forward to transporting your “precious cargo” for
the upcoming school year.
District 301 Calendar:
There are 5 Half Day dismissals remaining; February 26th, March 18th, April 10th, May 1st, and June 2nd. The originally scheduled half
day/last day has been changed to June 2nd due to 3 emergency days used. June 1st is a full day of attendance. The amended calendar
can be viewed on District’s website by choosing calendars under the Parent/Student option. If alternate busing arrangements are
required, remit a completed Student Transportation Information (STI) form.
Student Transportation Information (STI) Form Reminder

emergency situations, parent transportation & new student. Changes require up to 48 hours to process. A fillable PDF option of this
form is available for your convenience. STUDENTS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO RIDE THEIR ASSIGNED BUS.
Change in Residency
If you have a change of address, the proper protocol is to contact your child's school of attendance, regardless if the move is within the
district or outside the district boundaries. Upon receipt of all required information, the school will notify transportation of this change.
Transportation will being to process thereafter and notify parent/student of their busing information via email.
Spring Bus Evacuations
Spring Bus Evacuations have been scheduled for the week of April 13th. Dress appropriately for the unpredictable weather.
PARCC Testing/5th Grade Band Students
The 5th grade band students should NOT board the PK/CMS Bus due to the testing which will take place the week of March 3rd through
March 6th. The band shuttle buses will NOT be in service. The 5th Grade Band Practice will resume the following week.
Weather Conditions
Due to possible unplanned late starts or early releases related to severe weather conditions, families should have a plan in place.
Students should be aware of actions to take if parent is not home upon arrival. A plan can include having house keys, garage codes,
phone numbers and/or a trusted neighbor’s house to go to. This plan can also be used if parent is delayed on any other given day.
Winter is Here!
As the wintery weather blows through please review the following safety suggestions.
* Dress appropriately
* Be prepared to board your bus 5 minutes prior to the pickup time at the designated bus stop. With students’ cooperation, buses can
stay on schedule in order to arrive to school on time.
* Be aware of potential dangers while walking outdoors.
* Be careful when approaching the place where the bus stops. Move toward the bus only after the bus has completely stopped and the
doors have been opened.
* Pay extra attention to oncoming vehicles especially during this season. Do not use cell phone (talk/text) or headphones while crossing
the street. These devices are a distraction. Vehicles take extra stopping time/distance when roads are snowy, icy or wet.

On the Track to Success: Transitioning From Middle School to High School and Beyond
Presenter: Jeff Herman
Room: 123
This session will focus on the educational/academic and extracurricular choices
available during the middle school and high school years. Middle school teachers,
administrators and high school students will present and answer questions to give you
a variety of perspectives on these years. They will share skills and strategies that have
worked in positively helping middle school students make the transition to high school
and be ready to think about their future.
Social Media 911: Get the 411 from Elgin Police Officers
Presenters: Zandra McGuire & Laurie Heise
Rooms: 181 & 171
School bullying used to take place in the classrooms, hallways, lunchrooms, locker
rooms, and on buses. Now much of it happens online, beyond the scrutiny of
teachers, coaches, bus drivers, and administrators. Students have moved their
conversations to social media. Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using
electronic technology. Examples include mean text messages or emails, rumors
sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures,
videos, websites, or fake profiles. Officer Gary Neal and his partner from Elgin
Police Department will be joining us to discuss this very important issue.
Technology in Today’s Classroom
Presenters: Mike Doyle & Matt Billen
Rooms: 122 & 179
The explosion of social media and technology has changed the way educators
teach, how students learn, and the way teachers and students are
communicating. Discover how technology is shaping classrooms. We will be
sharing resources like StudyBlue, Socrative, and Nearpod.
Brain Boost your Way to Academic Success!
Presenters: Sue Sullivan & Mark Valentini
Room: 132
Description: Exercise is great for your body. What you might not realize is that
exercise is just as good for your brain as it is for your muscles! We are now
learning that exercise can improve concentration, learning, focus and memory!
Research 101: Helping Your Child Help Themselves
Presenters: Melissa Leisner & Pam Inkinen
Room: Library
Have you ever noticed your child struggling at home to conduct research for
school? Have you ever wished there was a simple, easy way for you to help him or
her? Then this is the session for you! In this session, parents will learn about
district resources, as well as others, that are available to students for research,
homework help, accessing online textbooks, and reading resources. We will walk
parents through how to access the link from the district webpage and show them
what some of the links have to offer. Handouts and reference materials will be
provided.
Principals’ Cafe
Presenters: Chris Testone & Carie Walter
Room: Cafeteria
Stop in and chat with the Principals of Prairie Knolls Middle School and Central
Middle School. Enjoy some coffee and cookies while discussing education,
activities and the community. We hope to see you there!
