Valley Ranch Elementary 2014-2015 3rd Grade September 8 to 12 Citizenship Trait for the month is: Patriotism Week 3 — What We Are Learning: Dates and Reminders: Math Fridays are library days for all four of the third grade classes. Your child will need to be responsible to return their books each Friday. Place Value continued—Standard form, expanded form, word form to the hundred thousands Begin Rounding Whole Numbers Math homework: practice math facts everyday (addition and subtraction) Review all the math papers coming home, practice place value Science Matter (Solids, Liquids, Gas) Please remember to get your background check completed so you can come up to school to volunteer! Check the VRE website for instructions. Parents we REALLY need you to join the PTO—it’s only $15 for the whole year!! Thanks for coming out to curriculum night last Thursday! If you couldn’t make it, please look at the curriculum packet on our websites. I also emailed it out last week! Ask your child what we are learning about in science! Social Studies We launch our presentation PBL that integrates Social Studies and Language Arts TEKS Sept. 11 is “Patriotic Day”. We will learn about being good patriotic citizens Language Arts Daily 5 and CAFÉ Guided Reading, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Reader’s Response Comprehension strategies Word Work– Long and Short O spelling sorts Homework: Read at least 20 minutes every night. Check for comprehension by asking questions and retelling what happened in the story. Please check your child’s folder and planner daily. This is how we will communicate daily with each other regarding behavior and curriculum! -Mrs. Reid Daily Math homework: Practice skip counting by 2’s , 3’s & 5’s Review & memorize addition and subtraction facts (9+7, 12-5, 8+8, etc..) Practice writing your numbers in word form and spell them correctly *don’t forget the comma!* Example: 75,498 - seventy-five thousand, four hundred ninety-eight Snack and Water: Please pack a healthy snack for your 3rd grader everyday! We have a mid-morning snack daily since our lunch is not until 11:55. You may also send a leakproof water bottle to school for them to keep beside their desk. Thank you! Our third grade learners will collaborate, communicate, and be personally responsible as they work together in third grade! Driving Question: How can we, as third graders, use our BEST presentation skills when presenting to an audience? *This week we are getting into our PBL groups and discussing appropriate presentation skills (Eye contact, speaking clearly, presenting important information, etc).
