Community Profile for Phoenix As the sixth largest city in the United States by population, Phoenix is the center for financial, commercial, cultural, entertainment and government activities in the State of Arizona. Phoenix is Arizona’s capital and the county seat of Maricopa County with more than 515 square miles. It offers more than 300 sun-filled days a year, and an average temperature of 74.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Phoenix’s explosive growth began during World War II when military airfields were built in Maricopa County and many defense industries followed. The name Phoenix, legendary Egyptian symbol of rebirth, was chosen because the city was built on the ruins of the Hohokam Indian civilization. Principal Economic Activities Phoenix has a diversified and dynamic economic base. High-tech manufacturing is a leading sector with electronics, defense and aeronautics as strong economic drivers. As the 10th busiest airport in the country, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is an important component of Phoenix's economy with more than 1,200 aircraft arrivals and departures and approximately 800 tons of air cargo daily. In addition, Phoenix has a 30-acre urban medical and bioscience campus in the heart of downtown known as the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. Major corporations with corporate headquarters in Phoenix include Freeport McMoRan, Avnet, Swift, and PetSmart. Scenic Attractions Professional sports flourish here: Diamondbacks (MLB), Cardinals (NFL), Suns (NBA), Coyotes (NHL), and Mercury (WNBA). Spring Cactus Major League Baseball teams in Phoenix include the Chicago White Sox, LA Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Oakland Athletics. Downtown Phoenix is home to state-of-the-art Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix Symphony Hall, U.S. Airways Center, Chase Field, Herberger and Orpheum theaters, Arizona Science Center, and the Phoenix Art Museum. There are more than 47 art galleries gathered in the Downtown Phoenix Art’s District, 17 libraries, and 15 museums. Community Facilities With more than 138 parks, including seven mountain areas, South Mountain is one of the world’s largest municipal parks with horseback riding, hiking trails and a fabulous view of the City. Papago Park accomodates the Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Gardens, and an 18-hole golf course.
