A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome Back to Term 4 2015
Welcome back to everyone for the final Term of the 2015 school year and what a busy
and exciting term it will be. The school will welcome the Kindergarten 2016 families with
a Parent Information Evening on Tuesday 11 November 2015 at 6.00pm and then Farewell our
Graduating Class of Year 6 students with a Mass on Monday 7 December 2015 at 6.00pm. So
there are many important events being held this term.
I would like to welcome to the St Maria Goretti’s Catholic School Community the Millington Family
– Isabella in Year 2 and Lucas in Pre Primary M class.
To begin our very busy term the hard working P&F Committee lead by President Simone Northcott
held a very successful Obstacle-A-Thon event at the school on Friday 23 October 2015.
It was wonderful to watch each class go through their paces on the oval collecting many stamps
on their participation card.
From the envelopes being returned through to front office, I can clearly envisage that this will be a
very successful fundraiser/
Thank you to YOU the families of the students who participated for sponsoring or giving a flat out
donation. Your support is very much appreciated.
Thank you also to the school Sport Coordinator Miss McCagh who along with the teachers set up
the course and did countless hours of preparation prior to the day.
I am sure the P&F will advise of the final result when all monies are sent in. Next Friday 30 October
2015 at the P&F Disco the winning class will be advised so please return all your envelopes before
Friday.
Standardised Testing during Week 2 and Week 3
During Week 2 and Week 3 of this Term, the children will be completing a battery of Standardised
Tests. The information gathered from these tests will be used to support your child in their
education and to determine the school direction into 2016.
The children in Year 1 to Year 6 will complete tests for Reading Comprehension, Spelling and
Mathematics. The children in Year 3 to Year 6 will complete additional tests in Science and
Grammar and Punctuation.
The Standardised Tests provide many benefits including:1. Providing data that enables your child’s progress to be monitored.
2. Teachers can determine what programs are most effective, or what areas the school needs
to focus on.
3. Learning Support and extension – students can be identified who need extra support and
extension in class
4. Enables the School to monitor programs and to provide direction for ongoing improvements.
The information and results will be available towards the end of the term via a meeting with the
class teacher.
Parking on the verge of Stanton Street
I would like to remind families that by parking on the verge outside the exit gates on Stanton Road
is not permitted. The Belmont City Council will be patrolling this section of road during the after
school pick up period and have advised that fines will be issued to offenders.
In-Term Family Holidays
Under the Education Act parents are required to notify the School prior to withdrawing the student
from the school during the term.
This should occur in time to allow the school to acknowledge your notification either via email or in
the written form.
School Attendance
During the first week back of Term 4 there were 45 students who were late for school and this week
there have been 18 which is a dramatic improvement – thank you to those families that have made
the effort to get their children to school and IN CLASS BEFORE THE BELL RINGS.
When a child is late it:
1. Disrupts the learning of all children
2. Stresses the child having to walk into the class when the rest of the class has already begun
their work.
3. Teaches them that tardiness is acceptable in life
Where the parent of the child who is late starts to talk to the teacher it escalates the disruption to
the learning and the teacher may appear dismissive which can offend but they are instructed to
focus on the classes learning once the bell starts.
I have been asked recently why the Education Act is referred to in the Late Note. This is because
the requirements relating to school attendance, which covers punctuality come from that legislation.
Attendance issues are addressed in accordance with those requirements, however it is worth
noting that this requirement is also covered by your Contract of Enrolment which is an agreement
with the School.
The primary driving force of ensuring your child is at school punctually should be what is
in the best interest your child’s education!
WHY DO I HAVE TO SIGN MY CHILD IN AND OUT OF THE SCHOOL?
The reason the school continually asks families to sign students in and out is in case of an
emergency where the school is required to produce a printed accurate record of who is on the
school site. At my previous last two schools there were 2 fires in 11 years so these processes are
necessary for the safety of your children. And therefore absentee and late notes are still required
by the teacher as the guardian of those required documents.
St Maria Goretti students make the most of transformed play area
The following is an excerpt from an article that appeared in the Catholic Education WA
eNewsletter recently and St Maria Goretti‘s Catholic School is highlighted.
“St Maria Goretti’s Catholic School in Redcliffe recently unveiled their purpose built nature
playground after extensive planning and a 12 week build”.
“The nature playground is the centrepiece of the Early Years Learning and Care area at the school
and incorporates a water feature, music area, sustainable gardens and multisensory equipment”.
“St Maria Goretti’s is in the midst of a significant redevelopment program and period of growth
which has also involved the complete redevelopment of the school’s logo and branding.
“Principal Martin Barrett said the changes
to the school’s branding, together with new
physical facilities and playground had all
been very warmly received by the school
community. He said the changes were all
part of a long term strategic goal to improve
the perception of the school and its facilities
and ultimately improve outcomes for
students attending the school”.
Children’s Crossing on
Stanton Road near Morrison Street.
I have been informed by the Children’s Crossings and Road Safety Committee that the crossing
on Stanton Road near Morrison Street will be reviewed in the immediate future to establish whether
the numbers using the crossing warrant its current status.
It is very important for the Committee to gain an accurate picture of its usage.
Please use the crossing if this is your normal practice.

Final Term
Welcome back to the final school term for 2015. We extend a special welcome to the Millington
Family who have joined us recently.
LifeLink Appeal & Favourite Footy Colours
Thank you to all the students who participated in our fundraising for
LifeLink by wearing their favourite footy colours at the end of last Term.
The students also made a link which was joined together on the oval to
make one huge circle.
We managed to raise $332 for this year’s Bishop’s LifeLink Appeal. Thank you once again
everyone for your generous support.
Later this Term our focus will be our annual Class Christmas Hamper Appeal for the St Vincent de
Paul Society. Further information will be in the newsletter as the Term goes on.
Car Park Safety
Just a reminder to all parents and students who park in the upper car park area to please use the
designated ‘Cross Walk’ to safely cross the road to enter the school buildings, especially the Pre
Primary and Kindy area.
Gates along side the Reception and into Pre Primary
A reminder also that the gate next to Reception leading down the side of the Kindy block and the
gate leading directly into Pre Primary will continue to be locked at 9.00am.
Entry to Kindy and Pre Primary once 9.00am has passed will be through Reception where you will
need to sign in as you are either late bringing your child to class or visiting the school.
Both gates will be opened from 2.45pm onwards.
This is for the safety of all students in the school.

Cloverdale School Dental Therapy Centre
The Cloverdale School Dental Therapy Centre is located at 180 Fisher Street,
Cloverdale 6105. Phone 9479-7222 – The Cloverdale clinic is open from 8am to 4pm,
Monday to Friday. We cater for school age children/teens, from preschool to Year 11.
Our clinic is a Bachelor of Oral Health final year placement clinic, during University semesters. An
experienced tutor oversees all check-ups and procedures. At present we are behind with our
waitlist. We would appreciate those that are having their regular checks and treatment with their
family dentist, to consider (temporarily) withdrawing from the school service. This would enable us
to service those children that are unable to access private dentistry. If circumstances change, you
are, of course, welcome to re-enrol at any time.
You may be contacted by the Mt Henry DTC, based in Mt Henry Road Como. They may be able
to offer you an appointment at their clinic to help reduce our waitlist. They are also a BA Oral Health
training centre, with experienced tutors supervising. Please consider accepting the appointment,
even though it may mean a bit more travelling. If your address changes, please call us, as we
usually send appointments via your home address. If your child has a toothache, you are welcome
to contact the centre during work hours.
If you have an emergency outside of our work hours, please contact your family dentist or the
emergency service on 9325-3452. Thank you – Sharon, Leonie, Cherie and Mark

near their class.
Uniform Shop News
The Uniform shop is open every Thursday afternoon from 2.30pm to 3.45pm for your convenience.
A friendly reminder that the sport polo tops are not available from the uniform shop at this stage.
Students are permitted to wear a similar polo top or tee shirt in their faction house on their allocated
sport day.
Year 1 NEWS with Miss Roberts and Mrs Vrankovich
The Year 1M class have been learning to choose
simple questions and gather responses.
They have learnt how to create a graph to show the
data.
Below are some photos of the students completing the
survey.
The Year 1G students had a wonderful first week back at school leaning about fractions, nouns,
verbs and adjectives. We look forward to a fantastic final term for the year.
Year 2 NEWS with Miss Horrocks
Recently we have been learning about making groups /
multiplying. We enjoyed a variety of group activities and
games where we got to learn together and share our findings.
Year 3 NEWS with Miss Ford and Ms Pavicic
In Religion, the Year 3 students created role plays to demonstrate
their understanding of ordinary choices and moral choices.
During Week One the Year 3s revised fractions. We talked about
how a fraction a shows equal parts of a whole and what a numerator
and denominator is. The students loved
getting their hands into the play dough to show
their understanding of fractions of a collection (e.g. 1/4 of 16 =4) and
creating word problems. During this process we
constantly make links between fractions and
division. The students chose their favourite
fraction and created a fraction number line. ...
Year 4 News with Mrs Gatcum
On Friday, we had a visit from Kathryn from the RAC.
Kathryn told us about road safety and we conducted
an experiment which reminded us about the
importance of wearing our seatbelt. We also played a
game which showed what happens when a driver is
distracted by their phone, people in the car or other
distractions. We had a great time learning about road
safety.
Year 6 News with Mrs Watters and Ms Meinck
The Year 6 Mystery Display was our focus during
Literacy Dedicated Time and is on narratives. We
have explored and discussed the different ‘genres’
found in books and movies. Students focused on the
genre: MYSTERY
Angles and Lines Artwork During Numeracy
Dedicated Time this week, students identified and
classified different angles and lines to create a whole-class
artwork. Next week, students will measure the angles using
a protractor to label the angles
found within the artwork.
Surrounding our artwork, are
stars made using intersection,
diagonal, perpendicular and
parallel lines. After creating
a colour pattern, students
wrote out the fraction of each colour to equal 1 whole.
Year 6 Incursion with the RAC
Year 6 can be seen having fun creating solar panel cars,
which worked
really well!
