Let your light so shine (Matt. 5:16)
From The Rector
The Reverend
Donald D. Binder, PhD
In scheduling for Sunday mornings, I try to make
sure at least one of the clergy is free from teaching
responsibilities so that he or she can circulate during
Coffee Hour. That enables Jane and I to welcome
newcomers, learn about pastoral situations, and simply
listen to any concerns parishioners might have.
With Jane teaching the Adult Inquirers’ class this
year, it’s been my turn to be at Coffee Hour. As always,
I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to mingle more among
the congregation over the past few months.
One issue that has arisen during these discussions
concerns the ability to hear the liturgy and sermon
during church services. This is not a new concern.
When confronted by it in the past, however, I’ve
addressed it by reminding the clergy and LEMs to
project their voices during the service.
While that has helped to some degree, the problem
has never really gone away. For starters, the church
has some acoustic “dead spots” that make it hard for
parishioners seated there to hear. What’s more, during
well-attended services, the extra bodies present tend
to absorb the sound even more. Finally - let’s face it as we get older, we’re not hearing as well as we used to.
These factors have led me to propose to the Vestry
that we consider the possibility of adding a sound
system to the church.
The idea is not without precedent. During the final
years of the Rev. Albert Jones’ tenure, the congregation
APRIL 2006
employed a rather crude sound system to amplify his
weakened voice.
Since then, acoustic technology has advanced by
leaps and bounds, not only enabling microphones
and speakers to be nearly invisible, but also vastly
improving the quality of the sound output. Many
historic churches now employ such systems, while still
preserving the architectural integrity of their worship
space.
But before the Vestry takes any further action on
this matter, we’d like to hear from you. If you haven’t
already filled out one of the surveys that have been
circulated on Sunday mornings, please take a moment
to complete the form included in this month’s Pohick
Post. When you’ve finished it, either mail it in or drop
it by the church office.
Once we’ve received a significant number of these
surveys, we’ll tally them up, read the comments and
then go from there. We’ll report these back to you in
subsequent editions of the Post.
In the meantime, if you have any other concerns
you’d like to share, just look for me at Coffee Hour!
As we all know, Easter comes this month on April
16. On that day, we’ll have our Easter Vigil/Flame
walk at 5:30 am, and Festival Eucharists at 8:00, 9:15
and 11:15 am. The Easter Egg Hunt for the children
will start at approximately 10:30 am.
While Easter services are always the best attended,
I cannot overstate the importance of participating in

the services leading up to that day. These allow us to journey with Christ on the road to Calvary and to share in
his suffering - so making the joy of Easter morn more complete.
And so, please put a circle around all of Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday on April 9, when we will
have the distribution of the Palms and dramatic reading of the Passion. Later in the week, the Maundy Thursday
service (April 13 at 7:30 pm) will allow us to share in Christ’s humility, as we reenact his washing of the disciples’
feet, his inauguration of the Lord’s Supper, and his arrest.
That will be followed by an all-night Vigil in the Vestry House, where individuals or couples can sign up to
“watch and pray” for an hour. This year, we’ll also have sign-ups for parishioners to devote themselves to an hour
of prayer at home in the same manner.
Our Good Friday observance, 12 noon to 3:00 pm on April 14, will include walking the Stations of the Cross,
a dramatic reading of Christ’s Passion from John’s Gospel, and meditations on the events of Maundy Thursday and
Good Friday. Come and stay for as much of the service as you can - the three hours actually go by very quickly.
Finally, join us on Holy Saturday at 4:00 pm to welcome the newly baptized, as we bring to the font those
seeking to join the family of Christ.
Make these services the consummation of your Lenten devotions this year. By so doing, Easter Day will burst
forth for you with unspeakable joy, as we behold the appearance of the Risen Lord.
JUNIOR WARDEN’S REPORT
Ken Wrona, Junior Warden
In preparation for the return of good weather,
the Property Commission met on March 4 to consider activities for the Spring and beyond. John
Sessums, Sexton, reviewed a comprehensive list of
items requiring maintenance. The list ranged from
over fifty small jobs to major work such as the replacement/refurbishment of much of the trim work
on the Parish House.
Saturday, May 14, has been designated annual
Spring Cleanup Day. Last Fall’s Cleanup was hampered by bad weather that forced most of the volunteers to work on inside projects. A lot of great work
was done, but with good weather in May, work can
be accomplished on a backlog of outdoor projects.
All volunteers are strongly encouraged to be at the
Church to start at 8:00 am. As usual, lunch will be
MARTHA GUILD
There will be no April meeting of the Martha
Guild. Instead, members of the Guild are
participating in the Lenten Suppers by setting
up, providing the meal, and cleaning up after the
event. This will be on Wednesday, April 5. Contact

served and it will be enjoyable. These cleanups have
always been great opportunities not only to donate
talent toward the maintenance of the buildings and
property, but to meet and work with fellow parishioners in an atmosphere of fellowship.
The “to do” list is never completed on Cleanup
days, and new things are always popping up. Please
contact Ken Wrona, Mike Wooten, or John Sessums
to volunteer for additional time and talent that can
be donated to the Church.
On March 11, the Senior Warden and the Junior Warden attended a meeting of the Pohick
Historic Church Commission. The Commission
reviewed a full plate of near and far term activities.
While Pohick Church is first and foremost a house
of worship, it is also a structure of significant historical importance. The Commission is devoted to
preserving Pohick Church as a part of American
Heritage. The Vestry coordinates closely with the
Commission in this important work.

Pohick Episcopal Church
From The Assistant Rector
The Reverend Jane D. Piver
On Ash Wednesday we are invited by the Church
“to the observance of a holy Lent.” One of the tools
we are encouraged to use is prayer. As we enter the last
days of Lent and move towards Holy Week, Easter,
and Eastertide, I thought I would share with you some
of the prayers I have found helpful over these weeks
with the goal to keep up the practice of prayer into the
rest of the year. So here goes.
Time to Pray
Jesus, I can’t expect to know you if I seldom speak
to you. Help me to find the time and place
to pray every day. Amen.1
A Difficult Decision
God I don’t know what to do.
Obviously whatever I decide,
It will make a great difference.
I have gathered all the information I need.
I have weighed those things for and against.
I have asked the advice of experts and friends,
And I still don’t know what to do.
Help me God to choose wisely.
And once I have chosen,
Help me to go forward in faith. Amen.2
Come Holy Spirit, show me my sin. Amen.
(Pray this daily and gradually, gently
the Spirit will show you your sin.)
In dealing with a difficult situation or person
Bless (the person of situation), Change me. Amen.
Prayer for a Busy Day
Dear God,
When the day is too busy and the voices too loud,
When there is too much on my mind and
too little in my heart,
When I plan too much for tomorrow
and explain too much about yesterday,
When faith is a Sunday word and
“Let’s be practical” my motto through the week,
April 2006 • Page 3
when I have hidden my true feelings inside and
then complained of being lonely and misunderstood,
when I am quite hopelessly lost
and don’t even have sense to know itBe my good shepherd and my friend.
Gather up my jangled nerves, my tense muscles,
My anxious and fluttering heart.
Gather up my fearful heart and hold it
warmly in your hand.
Send life pulsing through it like an irresistible flood.
Quicken me to quivering blaze, excited and alive.
But show me how to be quiet, too.
Teach me to be still.
In deep stillness let me rest.
Let silence surround me like a friend,
Calming me and instructing me
with deeper wisdom from within.
When my day is too busy and the voices too loud,
Be my good shepherd and my friend. Amen.3
And in closing, a prayer I use frequently during
pastoral visits. I find it both challenging and soothing.
It is found on page 461 in the Book of Common
Prayer.
This is another day, O Lord.
I know not what it will bring forth,
But make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be.
If I am to stand up,
Help me to stand bravely.
If I am to sit still,
Help me to sit quietly.
If I am to lie low,
Help me to do it patiently.
And if I am to do nothing,
Let me do it gallantly.
Make these words more than words,
And give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.
I do indeed pray that you are observing a “Holy
Lent” that will carry you into the blessings of Easter.

MUSIC NOTES
Linda Egan, Minister of Music
This month the congregation will walk through
Holy Week to Easter. On the Sunday of the Passion:
Palm Sunday, the prayer is “Mercifully grant that we
may walk in the way of His suffering, and also share
in His resurrection.” On Monday in Holy Week:
“Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the
cross, may find it none other than the way of life and
peace.” On Easter, in Psalm 118, the psalm for the day,
“On this day the Lord has acted.”
So, there is a real relationship, as Leonel Mitchell
says, “between the liturgical celebration and the reality
being celebrated, such that the participants in the
celebration become participants in the saving reality.”
This week is not just a commemoration of the end of
Jesus’ life. Parishioners participate in the fulfillment
of the Feast of feasts, the death and resurrection with
Christ.
Isaac Watts’ hymn (#50) based on Psalm 118
celebrates the immediacy of redemption:
“Today he rose and left the dead,
and Satan’s empire fell;
Today the saints his triumphs spread,
and all his wonders tell.
Blest be the Lord, who comes to us
ACTIVITIES FAIR • SUNDAY, MAY 21
The Spring Activities Fair will be held Sunday,
May 21, during all three coffee hours. This biannual
event provides an opportunity for parishioners
to learn more about the many activities and
committees at Pohick Church.
Involvement in any of these groups will make a
significant contribution to this parish life, whether
as an usher, help at coffee hour, serve on the Altar
Guild, or make apple butter. And the fellowship
– that is a rewarding part of joining these activities
– will enrich friendships with other parishioners.
ATTENTION to Committee Chairs or
Activity Leaders: For those that head an activity,
committee, or guild and wish to promote it at the
Activities Fair, contact Debbie Halla 703-3173358 or [email protected]. Arrangements
for a table must be made by Sunday, May 7.

Thanks for coming forward!
The St. Cecelia St. Albans Choir, now rehearsing
on Sundays 12:30-1:30 pm, welcomes Kelsey
Pehrsson, Rachael Pehrsson, and Julia Mitchell. The
new rehearsal time is a permanent change so come
join the choir! Singers in grades 4-12 currently sing
together in this choir. Hand chimes have also been
rung and there are lots of other instruments to try and
to incorporate into the music. It’ll be an adventure.
Welcome to new ringers Jane Piver and Jackie
Geschickter in the Bell Choir, which rehearses
Thursdays 6:30-7:30 pm. Handbell ringing requires
concentration and lots of group practice, which is why
it is so engaging. Consider coming.
And thanks to Tom Geller, classical guitarist,
and Carmel Hodge, violist, who have volunteered to
present music in worship. There is especially a need
for instrumentalists to play during communion at
the 11:15 am service.
Adult singers are welcome to join the Choir of
Pohick, which rehearses Thursdays 7:30-9:00 pm and
Sundays 8:00-8:45 am in order to sing each Sunday at
the 9:00 am service. Eastertide is a good time to come
and give it a try.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Frances Sessums, Director of Christian Education
The Flowering of the Cross and the collection of
the Mite Boxes will take place during the 9:15 am
Easter Sunday service. Students should bring single
stemmed flowers to insert into the Cross. If someone
should forget the Mite box on Easter Sunday, please
bring it to Frances Sessums’ office the following
Sunday.
There will also be the Annual Easter Egg Hunt
following the 9:15 am
service on Easter Sunday.
The egg hunts will be for
the Preschoolers through
fourth grade students
with two egg hunts
occurring simultaneously.
Immediately following
the service, Preschoolers
and
Kindergarteners
will meet with a parent
in classroom F, and the
1st - 4th grade students will meet with a parent in
classrooms C and D.
Each student participating in the Easter Egg Hunt
must bring a dozen filled plastic eggs per child to the
kitchen before the 9:15 service on Easter morning.
Leave eggs in the box marked “Easter Eggs.” It is
strongly encouraged that the eggs be filled with noncandy items.
The Lenten program for the preschoolers through
third graders was a great success. Thanks to Rusty
Booth for helping teach this class. Everyone had a fun
and very rewarding experience.
It is time once again to plan for next year’s Church
School. This is a very important ministry of the Church
with a great many rewards, and many opportunities
to volunteer. Some examples include teachers,
storytellers, door persons, aides, snack preparers,
snack purchasers, crowd controllers, and substitutes.
Helping in the Church School is a very satisfying and
enriching experience. Many of the positions only take
a few minutes every other Sunday. Anyone interested
in knowing more about the program or volunteering,
call Frances Sessums at 703-425-2857.

EYC NEWS
Jen Crump-Strawderman, Youth Minister
The Jr/Sr High EYC has just returned from their
annual Spring retreat. This year there was a good size
group at Raven Rock Lutheran Camp in Maryland (17
junior and senior high teens). The Spring weather was
fabulous, which helped contribute to a very successful
retreat. The teens enjoyed Bible study, relaxing in the
warm weather, and a campfire complete with delicious
s’mores. Special thanks go out to advisors Karen
Godley Awenowicz and Kristina Meyers as well as
parent chaperone Terry Mullins for all their help and
hard work at the retreat.
April will be a busy month for the EYC. Visits to
the Fairfax begin on Palm Sunday. EYC will take a
break from meeting on Easter Sunday. After Easter,
preparation begins for one of the largest fundraising
events for the EYC Mission Trip - the annual EYC
Yard Sale. As in years past, donations from parishioners
are very welcome. TRUTH IS – donations from the
congregation are essential to the success of this event.
Clean out those garages, closets, attics and help the
EYC finance the Mission Trip. Donations can begin to
be placed in the Common Room after church services
on Sunday, April 23. The EYC is once again offering
to pick up any large items that parishioners cannot
bring to the church. To inquire about a pick up, please
contact Jen Crump-Strawderman at 703-765-6373 or
[email protected].

SURVEY
BACKGROUND: The Rector and the Vestry
have been informed by several parishioners that it is
sometimes hard to hear the liturgy and the sermon
in our historical church. The hearing aids that we
have for use in the church have seldom been used
and are judged by some to be less than satisfactory.
At the Rector’s request, the Vestry is currently
reviewing this situation. An important part of this
review is determining the magnitude of the problem
and determining the desires of the congregation.
Please help us by completing this survey and either
mailing it or dropping it by the church office.
SURVEY QUESTIONS:

There is a wonderful opportunity to respond to
mission in conjunction with the Episcopal Diocese
of Louisiana, Office of Disaster Response. Outreach/
Mission is putting together a mission trip to the New
Orleans area to assist with rebuilding. At this time,
rather than construction, the mission is to help with
cleanup in homes. Perhaps, in another year, there will
be an opportunity for the Construction phase of this
very long project. The trip is currently expected to take
place during June or July, and based on the schedule
of those who express interest,
the date will be set. People

com or by phone at 703-5506058. For those unable to go
on the cleanup trip, additional ways to support the
cleanup effort will be identified during May.
POHICK COUNTRY FAIR
With seven months until Fair time, this event
is one of Pohick’s largest fund raisers, and takes a
great deal of time and talent to make everything
run smoothly. The position of Fair Chairperson
is held by Mike Zane, but some critical positions
related to the Fair have yet to be filled. The Fair
Book is in need of volunteers to take the lead to
sell ads and compile text. Typically, one person has
accepted responsibility for leading a sales team to
sell advertising while another person handles the
articles that appear in the Fair Book.
The Country Fair still needs a volunteer(s) that
would love to run the biggest yard
sale in the County. To run a successful yard sale, this person should have
good organizational skills, a keen eye
for items that will sell, and an ability
to price appropriately.
If interested in assuming responsibility for
any of these opportunities, please contact Mike
Zane at [email protected].

MAUNDY THURSDAY
Maundy Thursday is the Thursday of Holy Week
(the Thursday before Easter). It was the day on which
Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples, sharing a meal with them which we call the Last Supper.
Maundy Thursday is part of the Triduum, or three
holy days before Easter. It comes from the Latin mandatum novum, “new commandment,” from Jn 13:34.
The ceremony of washing feet was also referred to as “the Maundy.” Maundy Thursday
celebrations also commemorate the institution of the eucharist
by Jesus “on the night
he was betrayed.” Egeria, a fourth-century pilgrim to Jerusalem, describes
elaborate celebrations and observances in that city on
Maundy Thursday. Special celebration of the institution of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday is attested
by the Council of Hippo in 381.
The Prayer Book liturgy for Maundy Thursday
provides for celebration of the eucharist and a ceremony of the washing of feet which follows the gospel
and homily. There is also provision for the consecration
of the bread and wine for administering Holy Communion from the reserved sacrament on Good Friday.
Following this, the altar is stripped and all decorative
furnishings are removed from the church.

Cotton Ball Chick
Use these cute chicks to decorate an Easter
Basket or table decoration.
Items Needed:
• 2 yellow cotton balls
• 1/2 a clean egg shell or cup from egg carton
• Black & orange construction paper
• Scissors, hole punch, glue
1. Use the hole punch to make eyes out of black
construction paper.
2. Cut a small square from orange construction
paper and fold it in half to form a triangle for the
beak.
3. Glue one cotton ball into the bottom of the
egg shell. Glue the other cotton ball on top for
the head.
4. Glue on the two eyes and beak.
Jelly Bean Dazzler Hair Clip
This project is rated EASY to do. Parental supervision is recommended.
Items Needed: • Hair elastic, clip, or hair band • Glaze (Non-toxic liquid acrylic glaze recommended)
• Jelly Beans
• Paintbrush & hot glue gun
1. Set up: Arrange jelly beans in an order that you like on your elastic, hair band, or clip.
2. Gluing: Use a glue gun, but make sure an adult is present. Put glue on the jelly beans
as needed & place them on the hair piece. Let dry. The glue from a glue gun takes just
a few seconds to dry.
3. Glazing: Once everything is dry take the paint brush & gently brush glaze on jelly
beans. The glaze will keep it shiny & also keep bugs away.
