atom - a small particle that is the building block of all matter
chemical change - a change in matter in which the substances that make up the matter change
into other substances with different chemical and physical properties
chemical property - the ability or inability of a substance to combine with or change into one or
more new substances
compound - a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically joined in a
specific combination
electron - a tiny subatomic particle with a negative charge that is found circling around
the nucleus of an atom
element - a pure substance made of only one kind of atom
heterogeneous mixture - a mixture in which the substances are not evenly mixed
homogenous mixture - a mixture in which two or more substances are evenly mixed, but not bonded
together
law of conservation of - states that the total mass of the reactants before a chemical reaction is the
mass
same as the total mass of the products after the chemical reaction
matter - anything that has mass and takes up space
mixture - more than one type of substance combined with another substance in such a
way that the substances are combined but NOT bonded together into another
type of substance
molecule - two or more atoms that are held together by chemical bonds and act as one
unit
neutron - a subatomic particle found inside the nucleus of an atom that has no charge at
all
nucleus - the central part of an atom containing most of its mass
physical change - a change in the size, shape, form or state of matter that does not change the
matter's identity
physical property - a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing
the identity of the matter
product - the substance or substances produced during a chemical reaction
proton - a subatomic particle found inside the nucleus of an atom that has a positive
charge
reactant - a substance that is combined with another substance during a chemical reaction
subatomic particle - a particle that makes up an atom
substance - matter with a composition that is always the same
