The mission of the Recreation & Parks Department is to enhance and preserve the quality of life & the environment for
the residents of Marblehead. Working in partnership with the citizens, the department strives to provide the best
recreation programs possible in a safe & enjoyable setting. We use all available resources in the most efficient &

Switching/Changing Programs
Switching sessions/dates constitutes a withdrawal from a program and the cancellation fee applies.
Program Cancellation
Summer programs that meet 3 or more days/week that do not meet the minimum enrollment will be cancelled oneweek prior to the scheduled start date. Full tuition will be refunded. We reserve the right to reschedule or change
classes. You will be notified via your accounts primary email.

Full refund if the class/program is cancelled by the Marblehead Recreation & Parks Department.
$10.00 Cancellation Fee for each 1-2 Day program/class.
$25 Cancellation Fee per programs that meet 3 or more days/week.
All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing.
In the event of illness or injury, we will issue a pro-rated refund. A doctor’s note is required and written
notification must be provided prior to the end of the program.
Our 2017 Summer Playground Program offers your child a summer of fun they won’t forget! Your child will
participate in a wide variety of games & activities ranging from field games, arts & crafts, cooperative games,
science &nature and field trips. Your child, will also make new friends, engage with dynamic staff, & learn team
building skills. Whether you join us for one week or the whole summer, your child is sure to have a great time!
The Summer Playground Program prides itself on our dedicated, enthusiastic, and well trained staff. Our staff
creates a welcoming environment that encourages campers to learn new skills, make new friends, and perhaps
make new discoveries about themselves. All of our staff take part in a selective interview and training process
including extensive background checks as well as CPR & First Aid.

Summer CIT Program
Grades: Entering Grades 8-11
Schedule: Same as Playground Program
Fee: $75/week (Week 1: $45/3-days)

child’s counselor.
Please note: field trips may require an additional
registration/consent form & fee.
Counselors in Training (CIT) will assist in daily activities within our Summer Playground Program. CIT’s will work hand in
hand with counselors, specialty counselors, & report directly to the program director. This program is designed to
give youths a summertime experience that is fun but also teaches responsibility, leadership, & good
communication skills. This program requires that all participants are assertive & self motivated. The success of this
program depends on the willingness of the Counselors in Training to communicate with program staff &
participants. In order to give everyone interested the opportunity to participate as a CIT, individuals will only be
allowed to sign up for a maximum of 4 weeks; after July 1 participants can then register for any remaining weeks.
Spaces will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Maximum of 7 CIT’s per session.
Summer Playground Refund Policy
 All refunds are subject to the approval of the Marblehead Recreation & Parks Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent
 For those registering for the 7-week discount: If you cancel 1 session the discount will be voided and there will be no refund. If cancelling more than
one session, a $25.00 surcharge for each additional session cancelled will be applied.
 For those signing up for individual session(s): A $25.00 surcharge will be assessed for each session cancelled
 In order to facilitate planning &/or wailt lists, all cancellations requests must be in writing & received 5 business days prior to the start of the session.
 Refunds typically take 2-4 weeks to receive by mail.
The goal of our Sailing Program is to provide participants the opportunity to experience the joy
of sailing! Your child will learn proper knot tying techniques, how to outfit a sailboat, and safety
along with having fun! They will also learn what to do in the event the boat capsizes, and how
to work as team. The program will be held rain or shine!

LEVEL I PRECISION (Entering grades 3rd—9th)
This 2 week morning program is taught on 15 foot Precision Sailboats, which are stable, hearty sailboats and are
great for beginner/ intermediate sailors. The class will focus on parts of the boat, point of sail, right of way, and
fostering teamwork. This is a program that can be taken for multiple years and has a lower camper to instructor
ratio. The main goal of this program is to get children comfortable with sailing.

LEVEL II LARKS (Entering grades 5th–9th)
This afternoon program will be a two week session designed for those ready to make the
commitment to becoming a stronger sailor. This class will focus on strengthening sailing
techniques and teamwork. This class is tailored to the serious sailor with two or more years of
sailing and is taught on 13 foot Lark Sailboats. This program will have a higher camper to
instructor ratio.

This is designed for the experienced
sailor who is comfortable navigating
the seas. Children who enroll in this
program must have completed at
least 1 session of the LEVEL II Sailing

Paddle Adventure—7th Season
Entering Grades 3-9
Have more fun this summer exploring and experiencing Little Harbor Islands and
Marblehead Harbor while kayaking and standup paddle boarding! Paddlers learn
skills, balance, and confidence through games and activities such as relays,
board/boat swapping, capsize and rescue, piano keys… we’ve scores of creative
ways to teach! Every day is a new paddle adventure to an island, beach, or cove
destination for treasure hunts, team building activities, snorkeling, swimming,
coastal stewardship, and eco-awareness. Our program uses both SUPs & Kayaks,
offering variety and flexibility for varied paddler skill levels and water conditions.
This is a facility-based program with bathrooms. The Staff is experienced 16 hr Coastal Kayak and SUP Leadership
Trained Counselors. All skill levels are invited: there’s an awesome group & adventure every day for everyone!

On-Water Spin Fitness offers the ultimate aerobic and resistance work-out! You’ll be on a hands-free Hobie Kayak
using your legs, the largest muscle group, to propel a unique pedal-powered MirageDrive Kayak swiftly through the
water. You’ll burn calories, build endurance, and gain strength all while enjoying 3 - 5 mile coastal water routes around
Marblehead Harbor and Neck. No prior experience necessary. The class will be offered with varying intensity levels
depending on participants. Choose from tandem and single Hobie MirageDrive kayaks so you can join with a friend or
come on your own. This program is held rain or shine! Please arrive 10-minutes early as we launch on time; there are
no refunds for late arrivals who miss the launch. Limited to 8 participants.
Junior SUP Paddlers Program

Instructors: SUP EAST COAST STYLE
Gear up for summer fun in the water! Our program includes paddle board instruction for all levels to make you the
best paddler you can be while enjoying land and sea activities. You will learn improve or learn how to paddle with
certified WSUPA instructors: Sup 101, paddle skills, techniques, safety, rescues, equipment, teamwork, games,
adventure, explore the harbor with your paddle board make life long memories required to have FUN! Pre-requisite:
must be able to swim in the ocean.

Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO®! Apply real-world
concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects in Session 1 such as
Catapults, Pneumatic Cranes, Arch Bridges, and Battletracks; and in Session 2 projects such as Belt-Drive Cars, Truss
Bridges, Rail Racers, and Pneumatic Forklifts! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a
supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next

Using the latest LEGO(R) robotics technology, participants will explore the amazing world of robotics. Our
differentiated instruction provides students with an opportunity to explore robotics & programming at an appropriate
level. Using the LEGO Education WeDo, younger students will learn about gears, circuits, & computer programming as
they design, build, and program a variety of different robots. Our more experienced students will design and build
incredible machines using LEGO(R) Mindstorms. All students will have an opportunity to program using drag-and-drop
software as they bring their creations to life! Note: Participants do not take projects home.

Using the latest Power Functions technology participants will have an opportunity to explore the amazing world of
LEGO(R) engineering. We will learn about gears, circuits, wheels and axles, pulleys and much more as we design,
build, and program a variety of different engineering projects. Over 50 different projects are available including
motorized cars and walkers, remote-controlled tanks, and amusement park rides. Students will also have an
opportunity to design and build their own creations. Note: Participants do not take projects home

Adventures in Space
Location: Coffin School Gym

To future space explorers: Please join us and experience a five day space odyssey right in your own community. On
this journey you will learn about flying both in and out of the Earth’s atmosphere and find out what it is like to live and
work in space. You will also design your own space station, moon base, or Mars Base. See how rockets work from the
ground up by building and launching your own model rocket that can go as high as 1,000 ft. Students will have
there official Astronaut Portraits taken in a Flight Suit. There will also be video presentations and awards during the
five day program. There will be different activities in place each day for the students.

New! Paleontologist? Geologist? Archeologist? You’ll dig our biggest “in the dirt” week yet. Unearth the secrets of
ancient Egypt to see how Pharaohs were buried and then make your own mini mummies. Create colossal fossils and
learn about your favorite dinosaurs as we travel back in time. Dig up a cool crystal collection to take home as you
excavate Earth’s buried treasures.

Spend a wild wacky week at the Wicked Cool Lab. Grow enormous polymer cubes and create your own super
stretchy formulas from chemical concoctions. Analyze mysterious liquids with kitchen chemistry and make all kinds of
slime! Cultivate colorful crystals and go out with a bang as you experiment with chemical reactions.

Designed to keep participants active and on the move while teaching the importance of teamwork, this clinic
provides a great opportunity for the highly motivated young athlete to enjoy a week of sports with the main focus on
baseball and basketball. Games such as “pickle”, “pepper”, “around the world”, & “knockout” are used to teach
the basics, and then those skills will be put to use in daily games. Each participant should dress for sports play with
proper footwear & will need a baseball glove, sunscreen, a water bottle, and a lunch/snack. Come ready to play!

All of our classes are designed to take a child from a beginner to a beginner/intermediate level. We will teach stroke
work, volleys, and serving to all, with scoring and match play for the more advanced beginner. It is our goal for the
children to have fun while learning the game of tennis. Low staff/student ratio of 6:1 with a maximum of 12
students offers the best training atmosphere. Sign up for as many weeks as you desire. This program will meet
Mondays - Thursdays, with Fridays reserved as make-up days. Please bring a well marked water bottle & tennis
racquet to each class.

Basketball Clinic
Location: High School Field House
Instructor: Premier Hoops
This program is directed by coaches from Premier Hoops. All players are broken up by gender and put on their own teams for
the week. The first hour and a half of each morning consists of warm-up drills, shooting practice, dribbling practice, and pickup games. The next hour & a half are “league” games where each team plays against each other. At the end of the week
teams will play each other in the league playoffs. Kids should bring basketball sneakers, shorts, a reversible jersey, & a snack.

This program will focus on teaching the proper techniques and fundamentals of the sport of Field Hockey. Participants should
bring cleats. mouth guard, stick, and protective eye wear. All efforts will be made to hold the clinic on Piper Field even in the
event of rain. *On Friday, August 18 the clinic will be held at Seaside Park.

This program will teach youth the development of FUNdamental football skills through small station drills, competitions, and
games. Participants will learn how to properly run, catch, throw, block, and much more through out this clinic. Each day will
end with a flag football game. Please wear cleats and comfortable clothing and bring sneakers in case of rain. Please be
sure to pack a lunch and bring a water bottle.

Marblehead Recreation & Parks is happy to announce that our summer lacrosse program will be led by Salem State’s Girls
Lacrosse Coach Stephanie Lannon. This is a great way for a player to continue to develop their lacrosse skills during the off
season. Participants should bring a stick, goggles, mouth guard, water (2 bottles), snack, cleats, and sneakers. Please be sure
to bring or apply sunblock prior to drop off.

Since 1995 Mike Giardi has been putting together a wide variety of programs to give young ball players the opportunity to
fine tune their skills under the guidance of professional /collegiate players and coaches. This clinic will focus on teaching the
proper fundamentals and techniques to make each participant a better ball player. Fun games and drills will be
incorporated daily. Snack/Pizza will be provided at the snack shack for an additional cost each day; players are encouraged
to pack their own lunch/snack. Equipment needed: Baseball glove & proper footwear.

On-Water Spin Fitness offers the ultimate aerobic and resistance work-out! You’ll be on a hands-free

Kayak swiftly through the water. You’ll burn calories, build endurance and strength all while enjoying 3 5 mile coastal water routes around Marblehead Harbor and Neck. No prior experience necessary. The
class will be offered with varying intensity levels depending on participants. Choose from tandem and
single Hobie MirageDrive kayaks so you can join with a friend or come on your own. This program is held
rain or shine! Please arrive 10-minutes early as we launch on time. There are no refunds for late arrivals

many things including “stop drop & roll”, home escape
plans, home fire safety & much more of what Fire
Fighters do on a daily basis. Program will conclude at
6pm &then pizza will be provided! Parents will need to
