A young girl stumbles upon a family that has found the “Fountain
of Youth.” One day when she is wandering through her wood she
comes upon a boy whose name is Jesse Tuck. She finds herself
being kidnapped by Jesse's mother and brother. She soon finds out
that the members of theTuck family are immortal, because they
drank from water in Winnie's woods. Jesse, who is seventeen, falls
in love with Winnie and asks her to become immortal when she
turns seventeen, so they can be together. Winnie will have to make
up her mind about becoming an immortal when she turns seventeen
and also help Jesse's mother get out of jail for kidnapping her. Will
her love for Jesse be strong enough to become an immortal and can
she help Mrs. Tuck escape from jail? This touching story suggests
a sobering question: What would it be like to live forever?

Charlie Bucket comes from a poor family, and spends most of his
time dreaming about the chocolate that he loves, but usually can't
afford. Things change when Willy Wonka, head of the very popular
Wonka Chocolate empire, announces a contest in which five gold
tickets have been hidden in chocolate bars and sent throughout the
country. The kids who find the tickets will be taken on a tour of
Wonka's chocolate factory and get a special glimpse of the wonders
within. Charlie miraculously finds a ticket, along with four other
children much naughtier than him. The tour of the factory will hold
more than a few surprises. Most fascinating is the mysterious Willy
Wonka who in turn had a troubled childhood and has a special
grand prize at the end for one of the kids.

A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and
discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this
parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life - only much better.
But when her adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit
parents (including Other Mother) try to keep her forever, Coraline
must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to
get back home - and save her family.
The BFG is a book about a little girl from an orphanage named
Sophie who is lying awake in bed one night and sees a giant
walking the streets. She tries to hide once she has seen him but it is
too late. He takes her out of her room and runs back to his cave. At
first she is worried that he is going to eat her but he is not that type
of giant. He is known as the Big Friendly Giant and eats disgusting
vegetables that taste like rotting frogs. His idea of fun is catching
dreams and blowing the happy ones into children’s bedrooms at
night. The other nine giants however are man eating giants and they
go to different countries every night to eat people. They take them
from their homes while they are sleeping and eat them. Sophie
thinks these other giants need to be stopped but they are a lot bigger
and meaner than the BFG. In the end she does come up with a plan
to mix up a dream to tell the queen of England what is going on
with these giants. When the queen awakes Sophie is on her
windowsill to confirm the dream and to help create a plan of action.
They decide to catch the giants while they are sleeping and carry
them off with helicopters. In the end the bad giants are forced to
stay in a huge pit and they are fed the disgusting vegetables that the
BFG was forced to eat before. Both the BFG and Sophie live
happily ever after as neighbors. There is a bit of a shock at the end
of the story when the reader finds out the true author of the story.
Dear Families,
Please read over the text descriptions. I would like for students to choose a first,
second, and third choice for the book that they would like to read during this genre study.
However, if there is a book that you would prefer that your child steer away from, please
help to guide their decision making away from any of the books that you do not feel
comfortable with them being exposed to at this point. Students should place a one next to
their first choice, a two next to their second, and a three next to their third choice. I will
try my best to accommodate student requests. Once your child’s selections have been
made I would like for them to sign below so that I know whose choices these are, I would
also like for a parent to sign on the line below. This way I know that you as a parent are
comfortable with your child’s choices.
Best,
Sarah Brissing
