The ARMENTANO ACOUSTIC DUO Brothers Steve and Mike Armentano deliver upbeat music and songs especially for those who would enjoy material from the 1960's and 1970's. Their repertoire is from a variety of artists such as The Beatles, Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley, The Drifters, Dean Martin, Glen Campbell, The Lovin Spoonful, Hank Williams, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ricky Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Dion, John Denver, Jim Croce and Sam Cooke. The Armentano brothers have been performing professionally together for over 30 years, with vocalist Mike on the acoustic guitar and Steve playing assorted percussion. They are founding members of The Nifty Fifties Band and have performed at many events such as First Night Hartford, New London OpSail, Hartford Riverfest, and at many Connecticut fairs and celebrations. NoteTakers Needed Manchester Community College is looking for NoteTakers for the Spring 2016 semester. NoteTakers attend classes with students with disabilities for the purpose of removing obstacles in the learning process. Interested individuals must be 65 or older. The Cheney Company Auction of 1937: A Roof Over Our Heads How was the Manchester real estate market flooded with over 245 homes that sold in only three days during the depths of the Great Depression? The Cheney Brothers Silk Company was required by the federal government to sell their employee housing in order to receive federal bankruptcy protection. Remarkable documentation of the public auction survives, including the catalog, photos, newspaper articles and oral histories of this fascinating community milestone. Almost every one of the homes has survived over the last 75 years. The presentation will be illustrated and will explore this interesting story of Manchester’s historic neighborhoods. Explosion at the Shirtwaist Factory On March 25, 1911, one of the largest industrial disasters in the history of New York caused the death of 146 garment workers, most of them women. The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, which fought for better and safer working conditions for sweatshop workers in that industry.
