been volunteering at Westglen throughout the year
with fundraisers, field trips, school activities, Parent
Advisory Council and our store.
As you read through our students’ reflections, you’ll
notice that many of their favourite memories include
these activities and your help has made them a huge

Reflecting on a Great Year in Chinook’s Edge
A Message from the Superintendent
With the end of this school year on the horizon, we can look back with pride on a great
year of growth and accomplishment! The work
underway in schools across our division is creating positive momentum for our students.
“The work
underway in
schools across
our division is
creating positive
momentum for
our students.”
Students across all grades have studied and
honed their skills, and we are pleased that our
high school completion rates continue to be
well above provincial average. We have also
seen a significant impact in the number of our
graduates who are transitioning to postsecondary learning, and with this strong foundation they are in a greater position to continue achieving throughout their lives. Most significant to everyone involved is the continued
excellence across all safe and caring measures
in Chinook’s Edge, which we strongly believe is
the foundation for all other successes in our
division. We are working to ensure all of our
students have opportunities for success, from
the moment they enter kindergarten to the time
they graduate from high school.
Thank you to our students, teachers and staff
for your hard work and dedication this year,
and to parents and community partners who are
engaged leaders alongside us. I am proud to be
part of a team that works so diligently to make a
difference in the lives of the students we serve.
Thank you for challenging, encouraging and
believing in each of them, and in one another.
Enjoy your summer!

Band Notes
Spring Concert
Our Spring Concert is on Wednesday, June 1st, at 7 pm. All students need to be in their homerooms by 6:30 pm.
Concert dress is all black for grades 6, 7, and 8. Grade 5’s are asked to dress semi-formal (no blue jeans please!). They may
also dress in all black if they wish.
VIP Comfy Couch Fundraiser
At this year’s spring concert we will be selling tickets for front row VIP comfy couch seats for you and your family. Tickets will
be $2 per entry for the draw, and sold at the concert. We will draw the names of the lucky winners at the beginning of the
concert. All proceeds go towards the band program to help support transportation costs, instrument replacement, etc.
See everyone at the concert on June 1st!
Instrument Rentals
All school instrument rentals must be returned for summer cleaning by Monday,June 13th, as well as all school music and
method books.
If you are renting an instrument from St. John’s Music, or another music store, you are to continue your rental throughout the
summer, as all rental programs are rent to own. Please contact the store directly if you are unsure. At some point over the
summer break, it is a good idea to bring your child’s instrument to St. John’s Music (or wherever you are renting from) to be
checked for repairs and/or cleaned.
If your son/daughter is not continuing with band next year, you must return the instrument directly to the music store yourself
in order to cancel the rental contract. The school is not permitted to return instruments rented on your behalf. The address
for St. John's Music is 700 58th Avenue SE Calgary, Alberta T2H 2E2. Store Hours: Monday - Saturday 9:30am – 6:00pm.
Grade Five Camp
Our grade five students are looking forward to their trip to River’s Edge
Camp! The kids will leave on June 9th from school and return on June
10th at approximately 5:30pm. They will experience a variety of outdoor
pursuits and team building activities.
Our bus students need to make arrangements to have their luggage brought
to the school by their parents. Luggage will not be allowed on the school
buses on the morning of the 9th.
Thanks to all of the parents, families and community members who supported our fundraising efforts to offset the cost of camp.

Library News
Principal’s Message
I would like to say thank you to my library club and Miss Wiens
for all their hard work this year. A big thank you to all parents
and students who have donated books to the library.
As the school year draws to a close, there is a great deal
of excitement and energy throughout the building. (Maybe not so much in the Staff Room by the end
of the day, though!) Some of the changes however are
bittersweet, as we have some staff members who will be
moving on to new positions at the end of June. One of
our EAs, Mrs. Laura Lee, is leaving us to start a business venture with her family. They have purchased and
are currently renovating the cafe across from the post
office and they hope to have Reminisce open in July. Mrs. Jenny Johnson, Grade 5, will be headed to
Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs as the High
School Phys Ed specialist. Jenny’s enthusiasm and expertise will be greatly missed in our building, but she
thrives on new challenges, so we wish her well in her
new position. Our Vice-Principal, Mr. Jerry Salmon, is
busy getting ready to relocate his family to Raymond. It
has been a great three years together and I will miss him
as much personally as I will professionally.
The art display is in the library until June 13th for anyone who
wishes to come and see the exhibition.
I wish everyone a great summer holiday and we will see you in
September.
Please ensure all books are returned or paid for by June 17th
Good reading!!!

Spare Time Bowling
A field trip to Spare Time Bowling in Olds has been
planned for Tuesday, June 14th to show our appreciation
to all of the student volunteers in our school. Breakfast,
store, office and library helpers have all been invited to
attend. We really appreciate all the effort and hard work
they put in to help and we are happy to offer them this
special afternoon; it’s going to be tons of fun!
Calaway Park
To our Grade 8’s, we wish you the best of luck! We
will miss seeing you every day. Watching you grow into
the wonderful leaders that you have become has been a
pleasure. You are smart (and sassy), talented and creative, and we look forward to celebrating your continued
successes at DHS and in the community.
Happy June!
The grade 8 classes will end their year with a field trip to
Calaway Park on June 24th. This will also wrap up the
Physics/Mechanical Systems in Science. The cost is $30
per student. Permission forms will be sent home soon.
Farewell to all of our grade eight students
Best of luck in high school and your future endeavours!

CONNECT PARENT GROUP
Parenting in today’s world can be challenging at the best of times. We are very excited to
offer a group which will support parents in having a different relationship with their child/
children. CONNECT is the only attachment-based parenting program for parents of
teens out there. The goal of CONNECT is to promote sensitive and effective parenting
where parents will learn about attachment as it relates to their adolescence’s development.
Think about your child as an infant in distress and all that we did as parents to determine
what was wrong. As our children get older we lose this curiosity and determination to
find out what is going on with our child and the CONNECT program helps you get back
to that place to figure out what is going on for your adolescent.
The CONNECT program is strength-focused and future oriented. It uses several therapeutic strategies and techniques to help parents figure out their adolescent’s attachment
needs.
This is a 9-week program where each week parents will learn different principles that
will help with a deeper understanding of their adolescent’s attachment and strengthen
the relationship with their child.
We will be running the program starting September 26th for 9 weeks in the Community
Engagement site at Didsbury High School. A meal will be provided.
If you are interested in learning more or signing up for this amazing program please contact Darla Korver at 403 335-3234/[email protected] or Andrea Caines at
403 335-3356/[email protected]
